Wow - its Mary. Do you remember seeing her in Michael Palins Great Railway Journeys of The World filmed in 1980. She let Michael have a go in the signal box. Its on DVD and you can find it on YouTube. Is she still working at the railway??
@acquiesce100 This and all railwatch was broadcast during early Feburary of 1989, This may have been filmed in late 1988 prior to the week of Railwatch?
If you are into OO scale model railways then try to see the Hessle Model Railway Group's recreation of Battersby on the exhibition circuit. It will be at the Leeds show 31/10-1/11 09. The station building and signal box are superb.
Today battersby signalbox has gone, Glaisdale signalbox became a P Way messroom but is now derelict, Mary the signalwoman bought the derelict station building and is now a house, and it stayed open because of the rurality of area.
Great little video and line...Can't understand one thing..Why is it still open? I would have thought it would have been a easy target from Dr Beeching
it was possiblly on his list but if a local MP or pressure from locals some lines manage to keep going, I think the fact the local roads get snowed in during the winter and the railway doesn't was a good reason to keep it going?
Im just sat here watching this video thinking to myself, I'd love that job doing what she was doing in that signal box.... Such a smashing video. Thanks.
Apparently it's still physical tokens, although the drivers operate the "token instruments" themselves, NSTR, rather than RETB like on the West Highland Line.
I think there's only 4 lines in the UK using NSTR and only 3 using RETB :)
Thanks...I'm very emotional watching this, as my dad passed away just a few days after this was on TV. My earliest memory of my life was on his shoulders, at Par station next to the refuge siding. He was showing me a Rat, I remember the end-door and he small window above it.
Given the 25's were sent out of Cornwall in 1980, I must have been no more than 2 years old...
Thank you for the info

I would guess the new system they refer to would be RETB?

Dunno I haven't been up ther since 1985. I expect it's tokens from small sheds on the platforms?
