Hi i have a ?, is there a way to to lock gimp, when you open up the program that the 3 windows you see will be aligned and locked in place the next time you open up the program again.
Right now when i open up Gimp the tool bar and layers panel are partially off the screen, and i have to drag them back up from the bottom of the screen ans scale them to size.
THANK YOU SO MUCH haha. I 'lost' my layers tab and didn't want to lose the layers i had on a current project by shutting Gimp down and reseting the properties, and you just saved me days of work. -_- thank you thank you thank you. awesome tutorial!
@AliceStoleWonderland What after that? When I press that, the thing opens up with the patterns and stuff but it doesn't give me anything back and ALL my toolbox things are gone. What should I do?
I had an image with two layers on it, I saved the image. when my computer crashed I opened it up and only one of the layers is there, can i recover lost layers?
I'm trying to be smart and read all of these and figure it out, but I'm toast.... Found the Dockable Dialogues, but do I now have to MAKE the box that has Layers, Channels, etc. etc. myself? And how do I save it to look like that everytime I open it? I tried last night and when I just opened it today, it seemed to revert back. And, my recently closed dialogues is empty. thanks.
I am having the same problem, I see you posted this comment over 1 month ago so I am hoping you have found a solution by now. Can you help me? Or can anyone who has had the same problem help out please?
@malgalin Hi, I have gimp 2.6.7. I cannot find the preset docks in this version. Where it is? You can go to dialogue/dock menu under Window tab. But, there's no preset and no create new dock option. Luckily, I got back this dock from 'Recently Closed Dock', but, I don't know how lock this 'Recently Closed Dock' record will be there. I don't dare to close my Layers/Channels/Paths dock now.
I have 2.6 and i lost the toolbar, the main thing that u were talking about. :( the image is still open, but it won't let me re-open the toolbar thing with all da brushes. :(
what version of gimp is this?? GIMP 2.6 or GIMP 2.6.6 i dont rly know if theres a difference but mines different from yours. i have windows Vista home edition. Please help.
I don't have the file, Xtns, help. as options to click on at top of my toolbox window. does any no how i can recover my layers window thing. i have a mac 10.5, gimp 2.6
I dont have the file Xtns either this is not good and I have gimp 2.6 and it says tools on the top of mine not gimp it looks a little different and I accidently deleted the layers right after I just downloaded it what can I do?
Hey you guys i had the same problem but dont worry all you have to do is right click your picture go to windows recently closed docks and select the one you closed
the menu at :38, the toolbar at the top is not there for my gimp program and i've reinstalled it several times. but there is a separate window that has some of the things that should be there and i have no idea where some of the things on the toolbar are
all you do, is, in the box where there is nothing but file, edit, ect. go to windows>recently closed docks> and something like, "layers box" then you should get it back
This is one of the most important things for new uses / beginners. They should watch this video-tut a couple of times. I lost my docks when I first started. I almost gave up after it happened.
Haha, too bad I hadn't thought to look on Youtube the other day when I accidentally closed mine. I figured it out myself though. There are some other dock customizing things he left out of the tutorial though, like adding multiple dialogs to a dock. What I have is a 2 dialog dock, with the layers and undo tabs on the top, and colors, brushes, gradients, text, whatever on the bottom. You can add another "level" by dragging a dialog to the bottom of the dock, and add more tabs the same way.

Easy - click the little triangle in a small box about half way down the main dialogue (it'll say 'configure this tab' when you hover over it)
Then select 'add tab' and then 'tool options'
