I'm 17 years old and started bodybuilding when i was 16. I've been through many different sorts of splits and routines that i've either discovered or have been reccomended to me. Chest/tri's back/bi's, push/pull, upper/lower, full body compound and my recent favourite: powerlifting and functional strength training (inspired by you). However, the real question is how you keep such strict adherence to your lifestyle and schedule in terms of motivation to do what you need to do and keep improving?

I'd like to hear Mr. Hulse's opinion on the basic westside barbell template. The idea being 1 max effort day each for upper and lower body, and one speed day for each, allowing for variances in sets and reps. Would this method be practical for building mass?

dude, condition is the product of strength, speed, stamina and immobility! And all these factors play together and then the body condition is perfect. ( A perfect body condition isn't possible, because these factors have influence at each other )

Squats will really improve your tackling power and speed. Since you take off from standing and not from a stance I would recommend at least 50/50 quarter squats to full. Lunges are good to since you are often in stride when tackling, they teach you how to generate power off of one foot. Don't work your biceps at all, many your age do. Functional exercises. Legs and back especially.
Form is always important in tackling. Head up, butt low (like a squat). get under your opponent, wrap up and drive

@SFO14 do conventional barbell deadlifts (less knee flexion compared to squats) and single leg stiff leg dumbell deadlifts.
