Anyone able to link to a reliable source giving information on the materials the 747-8 is built from? I've been reading about new aluminium alloys etc making it lighter but can't find any reputable sources giving the info...
@DeniskaFromRussia The big "fin" on top of the tail? That is the vertical stabilizer. The thing under it when it's doing velocity minimum is like a little pad to prevent damage to airplane. They don't want to ruin a perfectly good airplane just for a test. Normal running aircraft do not have these.
Nuts - I was hoping they would do a hard landing test. Back in the 1970's, I saw a film clip of the first 747 being subjected to such a test - it was awesome! The test consisted of doing a standard landing approach, but without the flare just before touchdown - they basically flew it right into the runway. When the wheels hit the runway, the impact made the wings flap up and down, and the engines wobble from side to side to a degree that was amazing!
What i love about Boeing's is the control stick. I prefer the full Yoke setup as opposed to the Airbus's joystick only on one side of the plane. the Boeing gives you the more, in control, feeling when you fly.
If you love Aviation, if you really love Aviation, there is no need to compare these two state of art Birds... The Airbus A380 is just amazing & beautiful to watch. The Boeing 747-8 is also a great piece of art in the Sky. I personally enjoy living in such interesting times. Two of the most beautiful Liners ever are currently flying over our head...
Boeing, you made a Wonder from your 1960's Legend. That could not have been more beautiful and efficient. It's just staggering... Thank you.
I love it <3 wouldn't fly any other brand. Nope no euro flying cow here. Beautiful American legend. The only and the Original Jumbo or super Jumbo jet.
The great thing about the 747 is that, from it's introduction in the 1970s to now, only one crash was associated with the design of the aircraft. All of the other crashs were pilot error.
i wish this was much much longer, along the lines of a documentary. it is amazing. and what better airplane to watch than a 747, the most fabulous machine of all time
That's better large jet-engine would be less fuel and increase longer-range than old small jet-engine. Since Boeing 777's engine is best result can fit the B747. Also Dreamline B787 inside can same installation on B747 too. Awesome !!

It is so Beautiful , Elegant , Quiet & Very Sexy Modern Beauty in The Sky . . . Good Luck Boeing & Congratulations to all its Employees & Managment for Creating this Megestic Aircraft . Thankyou All . . . .
Can there possibly be a better proven heavy aircraft? The 747 project abounded in uncompromising design and engineering which happily resulted in an aesthetically satisfying jumbo as well. The 747's flight record, shape, superb massive triple slotted trailing edge flaps, heavily swept-back wings, beefy undercarriage & excellent cockpit designs make it my (ultimate?) favourite heavy weight modern jet...

I don't understand how anyone could prefer the A380 to the 747-8.

@MynameisElliott I prefer the looks of the A380, it reminds me of a cruise ship, 2 solid decks, its a flying Titanic!

A 40 year old design that's been tinkered around the edges. Boeing had the chance to really do something new...but didn't.
impalax327 3 months ago
@impalax327
why should they do something new? The 747 is like a Porsche 911 - everyone knows the "Queen of the skies" an her design :)
Arygosftw 3 months ago
@impalax327 that's what makes the latest version so great, all the problems have been fixed since the first model was launched in the early 70's.

@impalax327 "A 40 year old design that's been tinkered around the edges"?
No it's a 40 year old idea brought to perfection
"Boeing had the chance to really do something new...but didn't"?
Boeing responds to market and technology trends and to the needs of her customers. What did you expect from Boeing, an imperial star cruiser?

@impalax327 Why mess with something that is successful in the first place? Coca Cola tried to change it's recipe once - was that successful?
