No, the basic combat system is awful. I'm not a fan of the all or nothing death system, and it really discourages PvP, but that works for some people. But even if you're in the wilds, (which they fucking removed, I might add) then you still just have to run up, and hit someone with your stupid little rune sword, or spam your silly little spell. The class system, (or lack thereof) is terrible.
No, actually. It's not. Anyone halfway serious about it pays the monthly fee. I recommend Guild Wars. 4 months of runescape costs as much as a lifetime of a MUUUUUCH better MMO.

Dude, face it... Runescape is a terrible game compared to the other MMOs out there. They're a few other games that are just god-awful, but Runescape can't beat WoW, Everquest, Mortal Online, (even Maplestory), and Silkroad (even though its overrun with bots now)
Guild Wars is my all time favorite, and it's what I'm currently playing. Everquest, I almost played. But I chose WoW over it, and I've heard it's more of a grindfest than WoW, which is saying something. But then again, every MMO except Guild Wars is like that. GW actually has a story line, none of the others do.
In terms of numbers, Runescape beats all of them (even WoW, free players and paid players). Also, Runescape is made mostly from Java. If WoW, EQ, MO, Maplehorrible, Silklol, tried to do that... wouldn't really work. Now, I play WoW mostly now (and it is boring), but I used to play RS and used to hate it, till I realized that they are making huge amounts of money off of a flash and Java game. Now I just laugh at all the nubs still talking about it.
