The guys who run heat/semi do not all run the final, but each participant gets a medal......5 or 6 medals. In 2008 Asafa's anchor leg was 8.7 secs, fastest ever.

The end point depends on where you actually pass the baton, and that depends on how fast your teammate's start is.
With a lead like the one Spearman had Tyson Gay would have held off Bolt. Gay is the only man that can match Bolt's top speed. I don't know how, but Bolt's start and drive phases are better than Gay's even though he is much taller. Usually the shorter athlete can get to top speed before the taller ones. If you all go back and look at the second half of the WR 9.58 race, Bolt does not separate from Gay at all. The separation was attained in the first 50m.

I'm not discrediting Spearmon from being competitive, but in the circumstances when he was caught at 60 meters and Bolt was merely jogging by his side and taunting him, as the commentator stated, there's nothing in the world he could've done to win. It's like Mugsy Bogues trying to block Shaq and got posterized for it.

Spearmon got posterized at the line! he made it worst by leaning forward, he shouldn't have lean because he had no chance of winning and Bolt was toying with him. Spearmon was caught by Bolt with 40 metres to go and basically toy with Spearmon a world class sprinter like a puppet on a string!....At the end of the race Spearmon even went as far as to blame himself for the team not winning, LMAO! I like Spearmon, but what was he thinking when he leaned? knowing he had no chance of winning! SHAME!

That's an average of 23.35 mph or 37.578 km/h. Taking acceleration time to the finish into consideration - his top speed was 27.45 mph or 44.172 km/h according to the biomechanical analysis of his 9.58 record. Tyson hit his 43.756 which is 29.93 mph for a much shorter duration than bolt reaches his much sooner and longer hence the 19.19 sec.

@moonwalker5800 Look once again they don't have the same top end speed, Bolt's top end is faster than Tyson top end..Bolt 44.172 km/h to Tyson's 43.756 km/h it's on record. I'm not saying Tyson's isn't a terrible starter, he is! But he has the second fastest Top End Speed behind Bolt. Tyson reach his much later and hold on to his far less than Bolt who reaches at 40 meters to 150 meters to Tyson's 60 meters to 130 meters. Bolt would've ran Tyson down with a meter down, within the first 40 meters

@kingofsprints they work out the speed by calculating the finish time, but say if tyson was beside bolt at 70 meters he would be capable of running beside him to the line, tyson also holds the world record for a straight 150 meters hopefully we can c them side by side at 70 meters dis year, and tyson and bolt are on something either way like it or not

@moonwalker5800 Nope you got it wrong again Usain Bolt has the record for the straight 150 meters of 14.35 seconds he set in May, 2009 at the Manchester City Games. Tyson instead has the straight 200 meters at 19.41 seconds which he set in may of 2010 at the same venue. Even that time Tyson ran in a straight 200 wasn't close to Bolt's world record, eventhough Bolt had to run the curve and Tyson didn't. If Bolt ran the straight 200 he go sub 19 easily without the curve. Lets see them this year.

So with out the reaction to the starters gun and a real drive phase, Bolt would not have caught Gay from behind. The 4X100mr is exactly what it says 4 runners runnining 100m. You have to pass the baton within a certain area. If any leg is longer, it would be the 1st leg. Because you have a definite start point. The other legs don't. The end point depends on where you actually pass the baton, and that depends on how fast your teammate's start is.

With a lead like the one Spearman had Tyson Gay would have held off Bolt. Gay is the only man that can match Bolt's top speed. I don't know how, but Bolt's start and drive phases are better than Gay's even though he is much taller. Usually the shorter athlete can get to top speed before the taller ones. If you all go back and look at the second half of the WR 9.58 race, Bolt does not separate from Gay at all. The separation was attained in the first 50m.
