  • the live dvd version is the best i think

  • i remember this...smoking popes

  • I think this pretty much sums it up for anyone who has ever dealt with a one way love affair

  • If thine heart is not filled with joy upon hearing this, thou hast NO HEART.

  • The video doesn't do the song justice, says I.

  • When I'm listening to the radio and hear the opening bars of that godawful 'Walking on Sunshine' by Katrina and the Waves, I invariably think it's this song for one moment. Imagine my disappointment when I realise it's not. It never is.

  • excellent song classic altrn rock.

  • clueless, thats where this song is from. liked both

  • Power pop fronted by a lounge singer. Cool.

  • I'm glad this has a low view count, 'cause all those trendy fucks annoy me.

  • @warrkrymez calm down and just listen to the music fucking hipster.

  • @warrkrymez I know right there annoying as hell

    They ruined invader zim -_-

  • this song has been stuck in my head all day >___<

someone [it might have been frank sinatra said the guy has a great voice - i think the song is great]

  • SI NO ME EKIVOKO ES DEL 95....DE PM

  • singer should have ditched this band. prolly was too chill and relaxed with blink and stuff.

  • I REMEMBER WATCHING THIS IN 1994. \m/

  • Haha I met these guys at the Chevron I work at today. They seemed pretty chill and relaxed

  • @HermesWings1, that is some funny stuff, m'r f'r.

You may have a future in comedy-writing...

    Cheers!

    FrankC32

  • this was the one that hooked morrissey surely?

  • looks like the guy from Rampage

  • Born to Quit was one hell of an album

  • Classic tune.

  • @mgzegz1 You should probably either 1) grow up or 2) listen to your CDs. That's crazy to expect the same band at 39 as they were at 23.

  • @crashcarstar A) I think i'm sufficiently grown but thank you, and B) I was simply saying that I miss the style that made them who they are. They basically sound like they're trying to conform to what's "in" now.. and well, frankly.. today's music is SH*T.

  • @mgzegz1 They sound like Smoking Popes pushing 40. I don't know what you are hearing. I don't think being a pop-punk band led by a devout Christian is conforming to anything rock cliches or fashionable at all.

  • I just heard some of their new stuff and it doesn't even come close to this :( I want the old smoking popes back!

  • This was the first band I saw live, they opened for Goo Goo Dolls @ the Whiskey

  • @Lionstern That's awesome. Prolly 95 right?

  • @crashcarstar

95 sounds about right, I was about 14 then.

  • I love this band..... cant wait to they play the metro in Chicago again

  • Singing so slow and playing so fast is akin to patting your head and rubbing your belly at the same time, I don't know how he does it.

  • loooooooooooooove this song. I miss the 90's so much! Thanks for posting!

  • what happen to music ,this stuff was the best

  • Gosh...This Song Is So Fucken amazing!! It ROCKS!!! Lauren This Song is for you...

  • Dope

  • They are from Chicago

  • @joydivision1911 elgin, ill. i grew up there. alk 3 came from there. love that place

  • i hope the dj has this song @ karaoke... :D

  • I was thinking the vocal's a mix of Sinatra and Morrissey. Just sayin'...

  • yesss this is the exact song i was looking for <333 I love it.

  • takes talent to hit one chord the whole time

  • \m/

  • Was this song done for the Clueless Soundtrack, or a seperate album first?

  • @immieii Seperate album first

  • @immieii It was originally on their album Born To Quit which was released on Johanns Face Records, than sold and re-released on Capital... who released the Clueless ST

  • @immieii It was originally on their album Born To Quit which was released on Johanns Face Records, than sold and re-released on Capital... who released the Clueless ST

  • SOUNDS LIKE MOZ.

  • Live tonight @ Montrose Room Chicago. Great tune!!!1

  • I have seen this awesome band sooo many times and they have never been anything short of genius on stage! A great bunch of guys off stage! Hit the Double Door Show if you are able..... they do not disappoint on any level!

  • thanks for uploading this, love this song so much

  • classic tune cheers from greece mate for the upload

  • Saw them open for Morrissey

  • @Scottydont66 yep...uc irvine show!!

  • @Scottydont66 smoking popes and morrissey gosh wish I was there!!

  • kind of an alkaline trio sound... me gusta!

  • @skanky87 Actually Alkaline Trio and Bayside are two bands that site this band as a major influence....

  • @ThePubeylewis All the chicago punk bands are intertwined. Neal Hennesy is the drummer for these guys, the larry arms, and the falcon (which has Dan from Alk trio in it)

  • i looked this up after watching cluelessxD

  • A perfect blend of 60's style lounge singing paired with guitar riffs and drum beats faster than a cheetah on crack-cocaine. It's flawless. This is indeed a classic for the times. Thanks for posting. By the way it appears that 16 people have man-crushes on Justin Beiber and are incapable of appreciating good music when they hear it.

  • cluless is the best movie ever, so is that song ;D

  • this song reminds me of the end of Clueless !!!!

  • Remember I was here.Thai

  • Reminds me of the Misfits...

  • @jeffdeanable Reminds me of the time your mom and I were in the backseat of my Chevy...

  • @theonlytruepunk A Chevy, figures. Good luck!

  • @jeffdeanable I meant my Ford Pinto!! Your mom loves it!!

  • @theonlytruepunk She loves your Ford Pinto? Weird.

  • @jeffdeanable Oops. I typed my reply in the wrong spot. (Most likely due to exhaust fumes from my Ford Pinto). I am just goofing around...just chill.

  • @theonlytruepunk I'm cool. I figured it was just 2 tubers havin' a laugh. No big deal. Call any time. Cheers! Jeff

  • @jeffdeanable Yep. I love to fuck around. Most of the time, the people get real uptight...oh well.

  • @theonlytruepunk What can you do? People get insulted if you don't like their favorite song. Talk to ya later. Gotta go get food.

  • @jeffdeanable Eat well...haha

  • @theonlytruepunk Hahahahahahaha...I am just having fun...chill.

  • how many of you discovered this song because of clueless? LOL i Did...

  • Smoking Popes "Born To Quit" is my number five out of ten in my DID {Desert Island Disc} picks. That album has more to it than The Beatles" White Album", The Clash's "London Calling" or the Rolling Stones "Sticky Fingers. Its brilliant from start to finish.

My only beef is that it was never 'to my knowledge' been released on vinyl. Total shame. Get it on CD because you will love it!

    Rob/Boston

  • LOOOOOOVE IT!!!!!!!!! my new favorite song!!!

  • sounds like morrisey but better

  • @brandonferrazzi

Morrissey loves this band and i can hear why !

  • Comment removed

  • @TheWill0w OMIGOD THANK YOU SO MUCH! i was going crazy i knew this was on a movie and i couldnt remember what it was! have a beautiful day :]

  • Found this at the intersection of Glenn Danzig Ave. and Morrisey Way

  • so simple, so raw....as punk should be...

  • does anybody know where can i found the rare version of this song

  • 15 people should get fucking lost

  • Esta cancion es dmasiado perfecta, perfecta, mi cancion favorita de todas "oh my God, lo dije!" xD

  • This guy's either the greatest singer in the known universe or the deafest--it takes some serious talent to be able to sing like Sinatra while your band is playing like Blink-182.

  • @jmowreader Haha, more like Blink 182 is playing like Smoking Popes.

  • @crashcarstar Haha, more like Blink 182 completely sucks

  • @jmowreader lol Blink182 was still a dream in some 2 year old's pants when this song came out.

  • @jmowreader Lol. I never thought of it that way but he does sing like sinatra.

  • @jmowreader He acyually sounds like he has Morrissey influences

  • @mrbelmont2000 Morrissey was actually a big smoking popes fan and even took them on tour...

  • @jmowreader His voice reminds me of Morrissey's. It takes some serious talent to make this work so well!

  • @jmowreader LOL, nicely put. I couldn't have said it any better than that.

  • @jmowreader well said my good man, I concur!

  • @jmowreader I always said it was Sinatra meets the Ramones! Great call sir!

  • @jmowreader I thought he sounded like Morissey when I first heard the song... I can hear this guy singing "panic in the streets of London", just the same

  • @jmowreader LMAO .... this comment. I like this band, wth happened to em ....

  • @ChicagoDomino They have a new album out, This is Only A Test.

  • when was this song released?

  • @loverichi

    1994

  • Larry P (RIP) Boston MA 1995 one crazy fuckling night with those 2 chicks..

  • I remember this from highschool, what memories...

  • YEEEEEAHHHHHHHHH

  • awesome song. Viv Likes it too, right ViV?

  • I saw them open for Morrissey

  • Alkaline Trio's most relevant influence was the Smoking Popes!

  • @t0mr0gers definitely hear it man!

  • I always really liked the melody of this song.

  • Morrissey is also a huge fan

  • Go Crystal Lake. Never saw them in concert.

  • this song reminds me of "Don't Pass Me By" by the Pretenders.

  • anyone know what genre is this music? alternative ?

  • I used to work with Josh at the Jewel. I was a checker, he was a bagger. I distinctly recall laughing my a** off whenever Josh was my bagger. Great deadpan humor. That's what I remember. Nice guys.

    -FrankC32

  • this is the soun track of Clueless...(credits) Grate song

  • The Smoking Popes tear.

  • great tune........

  • I love this tune! It would be a perfect cover for Morrissey. It sounds so similar to " All you need is me " even the sound of his latest band .

  • Yeah it sounds like Morrisey and his band got drunk one night and turned up the distortion too loud.

  • i wish i i lived as a teen forever satrting in 40's to 90's

  • I get to see them tomorrow in a really intimate venue. So excited!

  • Word for word, perfect. If only we could say such things in the real world!!

  • I had this CD when it was first released on Johann's Face Records. The drummer, Mike Felumlee, also drummed in Alkaline Trio....be sure to check out his solo stuff. It's good too!

  • Word for word!! perfect!! too bad we can't say all that in real life!!! :)

  • Nearly crashed my car in Chepstow when I heard this

  • asteeg!

  • the clueless soundtrack!!!! :)

  • So in love with this song. I can't control the repeat button...

    DAMN!!!!

  • My heros...saved me quite a few times in H.S. great band =)

  • The Popes are awesome, I'm fortunate to live in a town where the music is just great. I live in McHenry Illinois, where Alkaline Trio is from, they went to my high school. The Popes are from Crystal Lake, basically a town over. I got a chance to meet Eli after their summer festival show in 08', he's an extremely awesome guy. I haven't had the chance to meet the others yet but my aunt and uncle went to high school with them and I've heard nothing but good things.

  • lol im from mchenry this town sucks dick, but i do agree the local bands are pretty sweet like the britvas noone will ever forget the britvas

  • my mom went to high school with these guys

  • @iwasbored1195 She have any stories or anything to say about them?

  • @crashcarstar yeah they played several shows in her garage. my cousins was in a band called the groovy love vibes, who opened for the popes a couple times i think.

  • @iwasbored1195 Did she fuck any of them?

  • @iwasbored1195 Elgin?

  • @iwasbored1195 she probably got plowed by these guys

  • I love this song!

  • awesome tune

  • big statement here, but i honestly believe the popes were one of the greatest bands EVER. the music hits such a amazing spot with me, been into them for like 10 years now, and still cant get enough! so many good memories attached to the music! keep em coming!

  • do you have any recommendations as far as good songs by them go? besides this one, megan, and rubella?

  • @ olyver08

the entire destination failure cd is good in my opinion

  • @tkmat The popes were an awesome band....daresay even a FUCKING AWESOME BAND, but greatest band ever? almost but not quite in my opinion.

  • i fucking love it. morrisey not soo much. i always get them confused with Jchurch. dunno why

  • haha awesome...seen these guys on a victory records dvd...these songs so dope lol

  • this song wrung my pants when i was like 12
