  • Peace to DJ Muggs from North Trenton, New Jersey.

  • This is the dude who REALLY got me into hip hop back in 91. Before that i was a casual hip hop listener.....I heard Cypress : How I coiuld just kill a man" and it was over...........Dilla might have changed your life but MUGGS changed MINE...He made me a Hip Hop Junkie i am today...........SA all DAY!!!!!!! EAST LOS!!!

  • HELLA SICK

  • Just the best mothafucka ever!!! Show respect people!!! The best beats for real!!! (Insane in the membrane a big one) i love all his fucking beats!!! Ese azteca real!!!

  • big that shit! respect to Dj Muggs from Mexico

  • dj. Muggs крутой! Уважение ему (Respect to him) from Russia

  • I would give up my life savings to buy the floppy disk this was saved to....

  • CHECK YO SELF

  • @russskates26 actually the problem is their not using expensive equipment anymore their all making beats in fruity loops, with crappy little soft synths digitally clipping. Lmao. Hip hop albums were mixed way more expensively during the 90s. Theres always been dick riding unoriginal cats in music. Using some the same samples from the 808 is about as original as using the drums from impeach the president on every beat.

  • I can't believe people think todays music isn't as inventive because its not on an sp 1200. Stricter sampling laws ruined the creativity. And im tired of seeing this nonsense about limitations making better beats. Its not the drum machines fault, its the man behind the drum machine that makes the beat...

  • @tonykanemusic I get what your saying but most of the Producers these days like Dj Kahled, Bangladesh etc.. Make shitty beats and they use 100 thousand dollar machines. The samples these days suck they over saturate the drum patterns, and they almost all sound the same.

  • whats that sample at 1:23?

  • @paradox817 The Turtles - You Showed Me

  • Real Skill!! Labor = value

  • doe anybody know the song playing at 1:06??

  • @casperlok2dbrain i noticed the turtles were on the record. so i searched you tube for u. under alot of turtles song iand i just found it. took me like literally a minute. its called the buzz saw by the turtles

  • @casperlok2dbrain The Turtles- "Buzzsaw" (1960's band). Right band, wrong song name. Ice Cube & D-Nice among others sampled that song as well. (D-Nice was the first I heard on "They Call Me D-Nice").

  • I could just picture Muggs in that same room recording every song on their Debut in 1991.

  • It is my goal in life to remake this beat...

  • GET THE LOOP AROUND.

  • This is exactly what I do..When I make beats..Mad respek to muggs...Thanx 4 being alive & puttin it down proper 4 us out here in the struggle

    ..

  • oh yeah and i love the "test" at the end with bringin in the chuck d record jus to hear dat shyt wit a voice, nice!

  • I think this is the first time i played a beat making video twice in a row.

  • Kick ass. What is that ? Im a keyboarder, I wanna get into sampling, thats fucking dope as fuck. keyboards piss me offf.

  • @MrGoNzObeAtZ That is the almighty SP-1200.. With little bit of research you will come to love and worship its almighty powers. *Bows Down to the SP*

  • CH4life

  • Sampling is the best way to create hip hop !!! You chop up sounds , use your 16 levels , to re-create that sound , im working with a 2000 and a 3000 i picke up both for a grand total of 800$ !!!! So kill your self when you hate on the MPC and sp 1200

  • What a fuckin genius...Muggs is the best DJ in hip hop for real

  • My God YES! I finally found what I was looking for. How Cypress Hill made music in early 90s.

    I wish I could afford an SP1200. ;)

  • 8 people got "mugged" during the LA riots!!

  • you don't need thousands of dollars in equipment to make thousand dollar beats..

In fact with the exception of major industry producers I've seen cats on youtube with big speakers, modules, mpcs and keyboard workstations that produce garbage.

  • Ooh jee! I almost forgot to like it!

  • he should did a beat out of the whole sample at 1:23. that was fucking ill

  • @peetfreak a beat was made with that smaple the year before..."sunshine men" from Freestyle Fellowship, maybe u already know??

  • @attic2basement

noo! just had the Innercity Griots album from them. thanks for the hint! made my day

  • @peetfreak

check the track from > Harleckinz - Dont Sleep ! its exact this sample at 1:23

  • @TheSunRisesInTheEast

    danke dir!

  • @peetfreak

    kein ding

  • @peetfreak das sample von 1:23 wird auch beim track "midnightsession" von afrob, max herre & gentleman verwendet btw

  • @peetfreak The beat at 1:23 was the one used for sunshine man by freestyle fellowship, around the same time.

  • @peetfreak already done by someone

  • the 8 dislike people are probaly lost soulja boy fans.

  • @vkwitshana yea lol and fans of rick ross, lil wayne, gucci mane, etc...

  • Devices are for producers, software is for wannabeez.nuff said

  • He is the greatest!!!

  • @avalanchecanvass awww whatsa matter mommy didnt love you? did you get enough attention yet? hahah well i forgive you man, i hope you learn to forgive yourself one day...

  • haha reading those comment touched my heart awww. now i wont complain about my equiment. that's a badass beat!

  • no computer screens, clicking or downloading, strictly hands on

  • I still got a wooden cassette rack too!

  • @Mozillafirefox420

Not really, others started talking about that Muggs would use today's tools if available to him. You know, assuming that I claimed that old stuff "is way better" than, which I dont't. Old is good, new is great too. But that wasn't my point since everybody needs to use what they feel is most comfortable and fun :o). What I initially said was that this vid makes me melancholic 'cause of it's simplicity and 'cause you can see how he actually did it "back in the days" :oP

  • @Mozillafirefox420

And why do you assume I didn't realize that? Because I am convinced that DJ Muggs is in his twenties these days and started producing/DJ-ing with B-Real and Sen Dog when he was 6 or something?

Or do you think that I would be melancholic about recent events?

So tell me, how did you come to that extremely logical conclusion? I'm all ears.

  • @avalanchecanvass

    loool, troll

  • @avalanchecanvass LOL! good one.

  • @MrCr80man So true so very true!!! I do miss creative beats & crate diggin ..

  • De la soul got sued for that sample....

  • What would this equpitment cost?

  • Song at 1:23 what is it

  • @sickofitall915 it´s something from the turtles. i think it´s name is "you showed me"!

  • Comment removed

  • @sickofitall915 The song is "You Showed Me" by The Turtles

  • SOOOOOOOO for real!!

  • Sometimes I wish I knew all the sample sources for this beat so that I could recreate it! This was an ill beat that went to waste. Someone should post the sources and I'll remake it.

  • what if i just handed him the mpc 5000, nigga would spontaneously combust.

  • @alexkamrock probably would want his sp1200 back

  • when i started making beats it was all on the computer, but watching this just gives me a lot of respect to the old cats

  • That's a true master right there. He don't waste no time.

  • at 1:22 is the song The Lightning Seeds - You Showed Me

  • @xyphermx Correction: The Turtles: You Showed Me

  • @xyphermx no the turtles!

  • 1:11 look at those cassettes on the wall. Damn times dun changed.

  • what is the track at start?

  • hehe, there it was @ 0:32 - 0:35 ... what a break. reminds me of pase rock's "grey matter" ... INCREDIBLE TRACK by the way!

  • The record is "The Turtles" song name: "you showed me" @1:24

  • word.... this was the year i was born.. mad!!!! ha ha

  • I'm surprised he never did anything with this beat. Whatever the song would turn out to be I would still listen to it.

  • why is this in a jake one playlist?

  • Thats that classic Soul Assassins funk!!

    DJ Grandmixer Muggs Soul...assassins...assassins...assassins!!

  • 7 people don't respect HIP HOP

  • anyone can help with the name of the slow reggae like track 1 :23??? it be great thanks

  • @sudakabenito It's called You Showed Me by The Turtles... Listen to it at /watch?v=HBBj82YCEzo

  • Every time I go to make a beat, I watch this video for inspiration :D

  • While many other producers gone commercial or have fallen off Muggs still creates straight underground shit. He produced tons of albums with underground rappers these last years.

  • This is how real hip-hop is made. Just a guy in a room havin fun making music... The best music isn't made in a $200,000+ studio. The best music is made when you have limitations because it inspires you to be creative and to find new ways to do things. I would much rather have an SP1200,SL1200, and records than to have a midi keyboard and a Mac Pro.

  • @MrCr80man You're fuckin right bro.

  • @MrCr80man

i agree with you but at the same alot of us new producers (90's baby's) where raised with the wave of technology. so you cant really knock us for using computers. but yh the best music is NOT made in the most expensive studio. its really about using what you have.

  • @FlamboyantAura I know where you're comin' from... I was born in the 90's too, and the only reason I don't have an SP1200 for my beats is because they cost $2,000 on e-bay. I use a computer, but I refuse to make a beat with no samples.

  • @MrCr80man

but with a computer you can download any song to sample...

  • @MrCr80man hahah well damn then i must be making some dope music! no seriously amen brotha.

  • @MrCr80man

    it doesnt sound like it...

  • @MrCr80man Word is bond fam !

  • @MrCr80man Can't disagree...

  • whos the cameraman?

  • one of the best yet.

  • SOUL ASSASSINS FAN SINCE DAY 1!!!

  • Muggs is the only cypress hill memeber that i have respect for..

  • Muggs is an OG. Such an incredible producer

  • sample on 0:22 ?

  • that record has so much crazy shit on it... u could so many songs with that one record.. every time he dropped the needle there was a sound on there that was ill!!!

    da relic

  • Best beat making video to date, damn shame there aint volumes of this shit!

  • Man I can whatch him drop beats all day!

  • What kind of stand is that with the SP and turntable on it? I see them a lot in videos or pictures and have no idea what they are.

  • didnt dj muggs get shot nd is the one who is paralised??? or do i have the wrong dude???

  • @puratejanopride are you thinking of mf grimm?

  • @HellolzEveryone um is he sick jackens brother cus i think i heard sumthing like that not so sure!

  • @puratejanopride excuse me, but what the hell is jackens brother?

  • @HellolzEveryone u dont know who sick jacken bro is sic k jackens bro is a rapper i think hes in the video el barrio before he got shot thats wat my brother told me.

  • @puratejanopride oh alright. im not too terribly familiar with the west coast rap

  • @puratejanopride his Brother Duke was who got shot, which is damn fukin shame, PYSCHO REALM STILL LIVES ON, one day he will return slaughter all these wack fake motherfuckers claimin to be real

  • @shaman2166 yea u got that right fuk lil wayne and all that fake bull shit this is real rap wat u see right her in this vid the real deal!!!

  • @puratejanopride naw man.....

  • @edwinorsomehow23 oh then idk then but heard sumthing like that though.

  • This is a piece of HH History :)

  • Thats a hot beat!

  • Why are you calling muggs a vintage tool?

  • I LOVE VINTAGE TOOLS

  • yeah I deffo find comfort in limitations.... everything is quicker and more fun / less stressful for me... too many options gives choice paralysis

  • Muggs is still doing it. If you missed out on Muggs -vs- Planet Asia or Muggs -vs- Ill Bill, you did just that: MISSED OUT!!!

  • back when hip hop was hip hop...

  • Holy shit. Here's a guy who loves his job. All of you 9-5ers read it and weep!

  • This footage is gold. Care to share how you came about hanging out in his room? Absolutely my favorite producer for beats etc ...

  • Souuunds Tiiiight

  • You know what makes me melancholic about this vid?

No screens, no computers, no Firewire-drives, no Mac Pro's, no motorized fader mixers, no soundcards, outboard-DSP-processing, no 5 controllers and Moog voyager/Access Virus synth you see in every other video...

Just him, an SP1200, an SL1200, some records and 2 speakers with a 10 channel mixer...

There's a certain comfort to limitations

  • @Usethebanana I think the same. All the precious stuff, all the magic done with this limitations. Maybe we miss something today.

  • @Usethebanana when the clutter manifest..the quality has dropped..anyone notice, except Usethebanana? It's still a great balance at this point..but IMAGINE PRINCE PAUL CIRCA 1988 IN HIS ROOM>>>>>>LIKE MUGGS IS JUST GOING THROUGH THOSE OLD SAMPLES HERE..TURTLES ANYBODY??

  • @Usethebanana like its supposed to be :)

  • @Usethebanana THATS RAW FUCKING HIP-HOP THAT WE DONT HAVE NOW..PEACE!!

  • @STARRBUCK1973

I disagree, that kind of hiphop (altough progressed) is still out there... Difference is that you need to find it on some obscure blogsite, rather than number 1 in the radio-hitlists where it is replaced by Lil Wayne/John/Dick/...

Still a pitty though, since I liked hearing this kind of stuff on the radio.

  • @Usethebanana And yet he creates REAL hip-hop beats, because it's all about talent and dedication, not about your gear.

  • @Usethebanana yes, there is but the last things you just listed would cost you a fortune nowadays while you can get a computer and a DAW for a much lower price

  • @susypeti

Even though price is not really the argument when it comes to the feel of a setup (you wouldn't consider "programming" a guitar rather than playing one?), I disagree. It has never been more cheap than now.

DAW or SP1200, you need monitors and an SL1200 in both cases. So really you should compare SP1200+mixer to PC+DAW+soundcard+controller. Both will be at the same pricepoint, and if you choose MPC instead, the hardware setup is 30-50% of the DAW-price... Not quite a fortune.

  • @Usethebanana ......everything is digital now..........

  • @BMUSIK101

Erhm, there is idd a huge trend towards digital nowadays because it has huge advantages like less loss in quality, storage, manipulation and so on... and also a cracked version of Reason, Live or Logic costs less than... anything (not true for all, but true for a lot).

But to say "everything is digital now"... nah. Then explain the popularity of the Voyager, MS-20, Prophet. Why does Deadmau5 have a room full of modular synths?

It's not digital OR analog, but digital AND analog

  • @Usethebanana act like he wouldnt have used them if they were readily available at the time.

  • @thehumanshin

You seem to misinterpret my comment.

Did I claim he wouldn't? He made use of the technology that was available to him at that time as well... I'm not contesting that... I just said that all this stuff, the limited setup, makes ME melancholic about the vid. NOT Muggs.

I don't have technofobia and I don't think "analog is simply better", I use it as well all the time. But with a huge amount of choice, it's nice to sometimes reach back for simplicity. Limitations can add comfort

  • @Usethebanana I'm with you on that

  • @thehumanshin

    Cool! :o)

You know, it's (almost) never about me or you being wrong or right. It's just about what you love and finding it. I'm from 1980. I just grew up with this stuff, this music, experienced the evolution of electronic music and other music-styles. Nowadays you can get an entire production studio and a shitload of features for a couple 100 bucks, which is great! But it's cool and impressive to see what the guys back then achieved with the few tools these guys had. :o)

  • @Usethebanana

All those tools mentioned weren't around during the early 90's but if they were trust he'd be using them

  • @shirt510 You said the same thing as thehumanshin, so I'll repeat: DUH! Yes he would have used them, but that's not the point, this vid makes ME Melancholic, NOT Muggs. And I said it makes me "melancholic", and not that it's "better than hiphop these days" or something.

It's like a 1968 Corvette. Everybody knows the latest one is better, that's a fact. But that doesn't stop people from reminiscing over an old Vette, 'cause it's fun and charming, not performing.

    Nothing more, nothing less.

  • @Usethebanana

I only read the replies on the 1st page and didn't see his so please keep your "duhs" and any other teenage tendencies you might have to yourself. No need to catch feelings over my comment ok. Also when you speak cars that's a totally different ball game most older classics are better than their newer models.

  • @shirt510 So to summarize, you didn't read the entire thing, yet you take the liberty to jump to conclusions by stating the obvious and throw em at me, and when called back on it you start getting all defensive... Yet I am a teenager with hurt feelings? Hmmm, interesting.

But yes, cars are the EXACT same ball game, just like anything else. They just have a different value to you than to others. But better? Again, depends on what you consider important. Performance? Of course not. Fun? Absolutely

  • @Usethebanana SOOOOOOOO for real!!

  • Hes directly touchin the vinyl?! WTF! Youre not worthy.

  • More worthy than u by the looks of it...

  • @sephardimm what are you talking about?

  • @sephardimm Not Worthy? You DO know who that is don't you?

  • @mindstormsabrewin

yeah, but touching vinyl directly is a sin to me. I'd never leave fingerprints on a LP, that fucks up the sounfdquality and the needle too.

  • @sephardimm Maybe he was too high to even care!

  • @sephardimm fingerprints adds the "GRIT" for griminess.

    Love those funky dirty beats.
