  • Now thats how a train should sound.

  • Britain at its best, engineering majesty excellent sound quality.

  • Very nice train and locos. Thumbs up!

  • Excellent video.

    Very great job.

  • fantastic..

  • Hello'

I am just wounder what happened to that Castle class profile that was on youtube a few years ago. It was wounderful in foretelling the history and the triumps of Britain's regarded as "Most Beautiful" locomotive of is genneration in design.

  • Hey!...why don't those guys have seat belts on?

  • cant beat earl bathurst and nunney castle stunning shot there :D

  • The black stuff you can see is not carbon dioxide; it's pure carbon (unburnt coal). Carbon dioxide is invisible. The inefficiency of steam locos - as unlikely as it may seam - is why they are so environmentally friendly.

  • Awesome great video..............

  • Wow, not very often nowadays you get 2 castles on a railtour!

The only GWR double headers ive known of recently were Earl of mount Edgcumbe and Rood Aston Hall. Still a fantastic sight none the less.

Anybody know whats happened to Pendennis Castle?

  • @justandy333 its at didcot wanting a heavy overhaul again :(

  • Briitsh engineering and ingenuity at its finest.

  • Great video - Castle power!

  • Good ol' GWR. Wish i was there to see lol

  • This is as good as mainline steam gets, great video clip! 5* Let's see if the 2010 GWR celebrations can beat it.....

  • Hi, the carbon from those engines is mostly in visible particle size and goes back to the ground, the CO2 and other gasses which matter are invisble, climate change notwithstanding.

    Lovely film, Brunel would approve.

    Rob

  • Talk about major horsepower being applied to lift that train away fast out of the station!! It certainly rivals modern traction and shows what steam engines (with highly skilled motivated drivers) can do.

    Seriously impressive!!!!

    *****

  • get lost go moan somewhere else.... no 1cares

  • Stop spoiling people fun.

I find it strange how global warming went up sharply when steam engine were taken off the railways

  • ill agree with you on that one mate

  • @andyg3 Great argument!!

  • Unless the electricity you're using to post this is pure solar and you use only public transportation, you're being a tremendous hypocrite.

  • @gguru1 I'm confused as to what you mean by this?

  • Imagine how many cars all those passengers would need. Your statement regarding pollution hardly holds up, especially considering how many cars there are vs steam engines in the world today.

  • Good grief, you'd died back in the days when my grandparents took the laundry in when they expected a K-4 or I-1 to come by, oh and they lived to 95 and 94 respectively.

Go tax that Prius of yours. It puts out much more soot per ton than these steamers.

  • me?

  • No Look Up 2 Wake Up whatever, he's/she's so busy saving the world by being better than everybody else, that they've missed the point completely.

  • @lookup2wakeup

How about you do some research into steam trains before posting. Steam trains are much less polluting than diesels running on the nework nowadays. Read robmcg567's response.

How about you turn off your computer. That way you'll save the power for our environment and give us a bit of peace at the same time.

  • Train enthusiasts wake up to the C02 fraud & the extra taxes we will all be paying. They may well tax steam trains too.

Support independent parliamentary candidate for Totnes, Dr Stephen Hopwood for Truth & exposing the C02 fraud & one world government.

    Thank you.

  • This shot is one of my favorites! Shows what a good crew will do for the public. The driver can make or break a steam trip! I order my tickets based on the loco, location ,& the DRIVER! This must have been a good day out if the day was as good as this!

  • nice !

Makes you proud to be British!

There used to be a vid of these two going up the lickey, but it seems to have gone :-(

  • @andyg3 It's too bad that Britain's railways aren't what they used to be. None of these new engines imported from Canada and mainland Europe could hold a candle for these fine British engines.

  • @VaderNES

    very true!

Railways these days dont have much to offer. Back in the day, they had charector, stations were kept respectable, with nice colour schemes and archetecture, and plants and a station amst who would be proud of it.

Now you get tatty looking buildings, bland colours, no staff at some stations, and boring trains.

  • @andyg3 I know. It is disgraceful. The utilitarianism of today's railways is disappointing.

  • @andyg3

How right you are shame that we can only bread vandals and jobs worths and the health and safty culture today wont let you grow plants any more as they are a health hazard if you slip ion the leaves that drop off them or the water that might get spilt keeping them alive... about time this county stood up and said enough is enough.... thanks and sorry for my rambelings .mark

  • @MrMarkarmitage

    I like a good rant!

Yes i am supprised we havnt stood up for our selves and said thats enough, on quite a few things.

  • @VaderNES Whereas in Canada we must suffer carriages imported from Britain!

  • Just found it,a superb video class, power, and grace, give that crew a medal, and have one yourself

  • wow! fantastic

  • great video, the two crews got their timing spot on

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the ultimate GW double headder of 6023 and 6024 along this strech of line

  • I will drink to that EVERYDAY. Two Kings double headed on the west of England line Ho yes please.

  • do you think that would really happen because that would be brilliant (y)

  • brings tears to my eyes

  • Absolutely brilliant!! This is a scene where two locomotives make a really powerful statement!! Thanks for sharing this footage with us

  • wow that is amazing! awesome video. fantastic!

  • very impressive!

  • nice vid m8

  • this is music to my ears two GW locos geting worked hard good video

  • Watching this brings back memories. I spent a huge chunk of my teenage years watching the trains pass through Totnes

  • Bah - 13 coaches and a pair of Castles. They'd've flattened that 1-in-50 if the drews knew the slightest thing abut them.

Wonderful sound, and they're in sync!

  • The usual limit for one Castle over Dainton and Rattery is 8, so 13 coaches is a good load!

  • Pity you cut off clip so early though -- I would have liked to hear the exhaust as they climbed away from the station.

  • Just a note: they're heading west towards Rattery Bank, not east towards Dainton. The signalman will have got a bollocking as a result of this, as there is a standing rule that the line must be clear right through from Dainton to Rattery before any signals are cleared for steam to avoid being stopped/checked at the foot of the 1:50 as here. Great video though - very spectacular!

  • Corrr! Don't you just love the big crank throw on high stepping GW locos...?

  • This is Totnes in Devon right, cuz if so, i go to the school up the road from der

  • one of the finnest engines ever built i drove castle years ago

  • Power and grace. Can't beat 'em!

  • Mighty impressive acceleration!! Would have left a pair of Warships or Westerns for dead!!

  • i don't know how many times i've seen this clip, but as a man once said "the specticle of double headed Castles never disappoints" and he is absolutley right!

  • What were the castles as I couldnt see? Great video though.

  • Are the Castles 5029 'Nunney Castle' and 5051 'Earl Bathurst' (but with castle name which I can't spell)?

  • the noise is just great

  • what an absolutely fantastic video the sheer power of these Castles !!

  • accelerate through Totnes towards the climb on Rattery Bank, rather than Dainton.

What a racket, reminds me of the days when I worked there!

  • These are by far my favourite class of loco of all time!

  • Great locos but no cab doors. A peculiar GWR thing... I read about coal blown off the shovel in a crosswind... Lovely Swindon whistles mind you. Blown for newlyweds on 'Manors' leaving town in mid-Wales...for miles and miles. eg Aberystwyth to Ynys Las!

  • Last time I was in Totnes the trains from Buckfasleigh ran into the station - and ran round on the mainline! Followed by a class '50' on a service train. All on video one day on YouTube. DADRENO

  • Sweet. I love the Castle Class.

  • very cool
