Whoever said metal isn't technical is not a musician, clearly you haven't listened to good metal. Heres an example or two try "Laser Speed- Between the Buried and Me" or "The Last Baron-Mastodon" I have seen jazz music (which i deem the most technical and musical genre) that doesn't come close to the skill and sound those artists produce.
I'm a professional musician, playing all over the world and the first thing I thought was: i give up!! Just like our friend Ejamieson...of course it's not exactly like that cause i'm also a singer/ songwriter etc but you guitarists know what we mean : ))
I have been a jazz lover all my life, but this recording is crap. I know these musician and they are unsurpassed, but don't degrade them by this low quality crap recording. Put some quality production on her and I'm sure others will agree with Zeppy. Now quit being a tard.
yes! why not!! after all alot of metallers are fans of jazz and they did manage to incorporate jazz elements in their music: cynic, megadeth, pestilence....
sorry but meshuggah has nothing to do with jazz, i said megadeth because chris poland has been always under the ifluence of jazz/fusion music, anyway, a load of metal bands are into jazz, blues,rock...here you find what im talking about:

some songs have only seconds of jazz alike melodies.
You clearly have no idea of what's really going on here. This is far more complex and technical than metal stuff, regardless of shallow details such as speed or distorted vs clean sound. It's not even close.
@lavacaqrie what's sad is that most people I know who listen to metal don't think that this is fast lol I think that's what therealdooz was referring to, if not ... then idk.
@therealdooz sorry , you are wrong, and you definitely dont know anything about good metal. if you are trying to say that just because this is fast and you cant follow it it is metal, you are completely wrong. jazz, unlike metal (a very vague term, btw, since there are so many different kinds of metal, good and bad), does like to play in a mess (albeit, wonderful) and use a ton of off-chord-tone notes. lots of metal is done by skilled and creative musicians, so please also be specific
any1 know of some good cds to buy revolving around this sort of jazz? cause i love jazz and all the classics but i love small trios up to like sextets, that play this kind of stuff.
Music is not about being close minded or bashing someone's creative expression. The White Stripes are extremely creative in their realm, Jack White is incredibly talented as a writer and performer. Just because you love jazz doesn't make other music "obsolete" or "lesser" music, I can guarantee that Pat Matheny and Antonio Sanchez listen to music other than jazz. The best music doesn't come from one source and one source only, i.e. Jonny Greenwood listening to Reggae for six months.
i think you're getting ahead of the game. ppl who think they have a progressive ear sometimes like to set ppl straight for a comment they may have made. but i happen to know of several bands who i think the stripes completely heisted material from: everyone has formulated their own opinions but i have NO regard for posing bands who take a particular sound and replicate it. bottom line: the stripe aint creative therefore they dont belong in this type of discussion
i dont think its right to diss the white stripes or anyone else trying to express their creativity through music regardless of your own personal music tastes.
Music is not all about skill. There are different factors such as personal taste and the way in which you percieve expression through music to be. I dont think the white strips are particularly talented musicians, but i enjoy thier music as i appreciate their expression - not their skill
yeah they r a joke personally. if you wanna name bands outside of jazz that are really 'creative' it's easy: rush, floyd, flaming lips(soft bulletin, only to me),irepress, red sparrowe, ulrich schnauss(electro guy, which i rarely like)
i think what the flaming lips did with 'the soft bulletin' blows all the copycat stripes stuff outta the water. that type of expression was done perfectly back then i.e. the stripes dont even belong in this situation
jeez my comment got completely buried! didnt mean any disrespect to pat.. just wanted to point out that it is unusual to see a guitar-drums duo in jazz.. pat has been my favorite guitarist for years and this is actually one of my fave tunes.
Yeah b/c he's arguably the best. I could pick a metheny solo out of 100. Not even second guessing. Most unique and interesting improviser on guitar possibly ever
I grew up on post-bop...high school was Miles doing "sketches of spain"...I am so SO glad that some talented people are keeping the flow alive, and going..
"Dream of the return" (Letter from home, Best Jazz Fusion Performance 1989 - 32nd Annual GRAMMY Awards). The singer (and lyrics´s author) is Pedro Aznar.
He's i think the top of the Top 3: Metheny, Scofield, Martino. And he's not just one of the greatest guitarists, he's in the top 100 musicians that ever lived.
I feel badly for Pat because he just can't win. If he puts out a pretty-melodies fuzak record, modern guys (like me) say, "Aw, come on, man!" On the other hand, if he plays to his potential, (like this example), old-timers like louie jump all over him.
Hard to believe that you can talk about PM in such a condescending way. You're not such a "modern guy". You're 41. Just b/c you read Slonimsky doesn't make you cool. I'm quite sure that PM knows as much as the next guy & has recorded w/some of the greatest musicians in the world. Ornette Coleman for one, & perhaps, closer to your taste. You don't need to feel bad for PM. He's one of the most successful jazz artists in the world & he doesn't need your approval.
Don't, he knows exactly what he's doing. The yuppie jazz is his income, so, he can play stuff like Ornette....otherwise he'd absolutely have to get a job. Same with Brad Meldhau copping pop tunes for their heads...and then he plays jazz. It's a great way to get views and attention and ultimately money. If he did standards....he'd have to get a job. These guys know what they're doing.
guitarguy10000, well put. Perhaps we should feel bad for those jazz musicians true to their art who never get to see the light of day (so to speak), leaving themselves no choice but to keep a day job. PM's composition are all sublime (whether they meet the approval of purists or not) and belong in the lineage w/great composers of the last 400 years. All great composers sometimes wrote beneath their abilities for whatever reason - for income, I would imagine. They did it, & Pat does it, too.

Although the size and brand of the cymbals DO determine sound and quality. It's all part of it: Modell (sound), brand (quality) and drummer (technique).
This is great, around 1:18 he sneaks a country lick in for a laugh I'd presume and its really cool how the drummer picks up in this right away. Shows how in tune these cats are.

yeah i was defending this piece. pat metheny is a musical genius. anybody that watches this should see the pure dedicated musicianship of these people, whether or not they like it. pat metheny is somebody that knows what music as a real artform is. although some people may not like it, that doesnt mean its shit. anybody with any level of musicical education and basic understanding of jazz will appreciate the skill and art involved here.

yeah i was defending this piece. pat metheny is a musical genius. anybody that watches this should see the pure dedicated musicianship of these people, whether or not they like it. pat metheny is somebody that knows what music as a real artform is. although some people may not like it, that doesnt mean its shit. anybody with any level of musicical education and basic understanding of jazz will appreciate the skill and art involved here.
