UFO Extraterrestrials is a pretty good re-make of this game, some of the original devs were involved i think :)

The recent gold version even included a massive mod by default that lets u customize the game settings to your liking.

@Andrius226 They're using a mod called UFOExtender. It adds a lot of things such as the stats, rank, base layout and soldier ship positioning (For example, Sergeants in the back, recruits in the front.)
