  • While it's again great to see some vintage video, lip synching perfs are awful.

  • I think it is dubbed, which was acually a pretty common practice with musdical acts in the Sixties. on TV. It just sounds too perfect. But I am not taking anything from either of these songs. At the time, the BS was the biggest act in the US. Had they stayed together, who knows what heights they may have reached? Or CSN&Y for that matter, 2 years later. Just so much talent. Stills especially was a song writing machine in the early days. But he got into alcohol real bad, drugs too.

  • Notice the Artful Usage of our Olde Song... followed by the Artful use of our NEW SONG....

  • I never realized until this video that "Mr Soul" had a "Satisfaction" like guitar lick.

  • Can't anywone tell they're making playback!

  • Neil Young is so bad-ass, he really was a genuine "hippy" back then--awesome video--amazing brilliant songwriter/performer/human being !

  • He wrote the whole song all the way thru in five minutes without changing any of the words. Let him know if you hear any words that you think he should change.

  • Who is the host? Tony Martin?

  • Look! It's Moe, with giant sideburns! And dressed like an Indian!

  • 100% rock and roll

  • These were the songs of the GOLDEN AGE of ROCK!!

  • Bsck when there was real music!

  • Neil Young is a genius!

  • Bruce Palmer must be Camera shy, this is the 2nd video of Buffalo S. where he's turned his back on the camera.

  • What an excellent video. I love this band and these two songs are brilliant. Steven Stills is having a great time with the moves in the background. Gotta love it. The outfits are great too.

  • Look how young Neil was--and his tribal clothes--long may he run...and miss Buffalo Springfield

  • Gaz from Supergrass must have stolen Neil's sidies....

  • What's the bass player doing?

  • Anyone out there know how many Groups Neil Young sang with?

  • the bass player

  • So who is the guy with his back to us?

  • Something in this video you'll never see in today's videos, 4 Fender amps and cords!!!!!

  • @91fatboy51 Don't forget talent. Lol.

  • @91fatboy51 OK.... Whos playing the bass?

  • @makahaLouie At this performance Buffalo Springfield was between bass players and their road manager, with his back to the audience faked it while a tape played the pre- recorded bass part.Original bass player was Bruce Palmer but they had several others (Jim Fielder, Mike Barnes) before they disbanded. Interesting trivia about this video, it clearly shows Stephen Still's bad teeth: he auditioned for the Monkees (he was the best musical talent by far) but lost out because his teeth. A shame

  • @makahaLouie Trivia follow up: I am 60 years old, I have always been a big Neil Young fan, followed all his music thru the years. I saw him (solo) in 1970 and he had an unknown (at the time) young, petite, long haired female singer open for his concert, she was great and blew the crowd away! She went on to become a superstar. Guess who? Linda Rohnstat (not sure her name is spelled correctly) Neil is and always will be my favorite musician, he is real, one of the few artists that never sold out.

  • @91fatboy51 Naaah, I'm sure it's not that hard to find videos with Fender amps, come on.

  • @ppetracco With cords? Everybody is wireless nowdays!! That was my point, they are actually plugged in!! I'm sure Fender supplied the amps as a promo, but I thought it was neat, 4 Fender Amps actually plugged into the artists' guitars

  • @91fatboy51 Oh, I see. But still, YouTube is not just U2 and Coldplay videos.

  • to put in a proper prospective it's Buffalo Springfield :) QC

  • I dig how Neil just jumps in and takes over.

  • haha damn great stoneds

  • Esse video é muito doido...

  • Obrigado.

  • being behing in the 60s was like being in the future.. with all of this shitty music nowadays..

  • this is incredible love it just BAM out of no where

  • Neil was 22 when this was recorded. Just a bunch of kids.

  • WOW!

  • I want that fringe jacket

  • This is AMAZING!! Lip synching "For What It's Worth" fgor half a verse & THEN.......POW!!! Mr.Soul non synched!!

  • neil young is so young :D

  • The bass player has his back turned because Bruce Palmer got deported for drug possession and i believe the manager was miming a bass backtrack

  • classic clip indeed !! who is the guy who introduced them, looks familar but i am stumped ?

  • @mjchin: I'm not sure...Gig Young was the first name that popped into my head...

  • @mjchin , the man , who introduced them is, according to my neighbor ,, who, is in her late 70's ,is "Tony Martin" a "singer, actor and matinee idol " of the 40's and 50's,?

  • Yes Neil~ rock it!

  • Neil is the only one that's plugged in. The guitar solo he plays doesn't sound the same as it does on the album. In fact it's not even close.

  • that is and always will be real rock and roll fresh as it always was makes you wanna dance!! love neil ! rock on 60s rule!!! what a great group!!!

  • OMG! Look at Neil Young and Stephen Stills!!

  • They're about 21-22 years old here; born in the same year. The cowboy look was big in the late 60s. First song written by Stills; second one by Neil Young.

  • freakin greattttttttttt

  • in a while will the smile on my face turn too plaster=] stick around while the clown who is sick does the trick of disaster

  • Neil Young was super cool. --> Still is.

  • From Outfits you could tell they were from different parts/ COuntry cowboy hat/ folk indina shirt/ happy classic rock oldie suit for the drummer.

  • i guess an indian outfit, mean sideburns, and a bowl cut got you women back then

  • mine does only i have dreads

  • It did if you were Neil Young.

  • lipsynching......and the bassist has his back turned because he was deported for drug possession....

  • woahh fuckin nice!!!

  • lol looks like a diverse band

  • Very nice. Not big on Neil Young but no pun intended he was definitely badass when he was young. Great Vid.

  • Does anyone think that Neil's jacket is suede?

  • I don't know what it is about these dudes but this video is indisputable proof that these dudes were some of the coolest motherfuckas ever.

  • What a riot... two of my all-time favorites.

  • whats the name of the 2nd song?

  • Mr. Soul

  • that guy with his back to the audience is Liberace , its common knowledge that Neil was a poof and having a rhinestone-encrusted gay affair with " Mr Showmanship "

  • yeah, you wish! Fact is Neil has had more women than you can ever fantasize about sitting in front of the computer with your pants around your ankles, haha!

  • well said!

  • thanks played it about 6 times

A very underrated song but it dont matter

its great thanks for the post of the vid

  • Why does the bass player have his back to the audience. Did Bruce Palmer quit and they had to get a replacement or something? Even still, why did they feel they had to humiliate the guy like that? At least for that appearance he was in the Buffalo Springfield. Maybe it's Richie Furray. I don't know. Does anyone know what the deal is here?

  • He was living in the U.S. illegally.

  • thanks.

  • I think he was kidding

  • Neil Young is super cool ---> and will be forever !!

  • Neil Young is still going strong. Still making great music. Go buy it and quit bitching!! LOL

  • U HATE THE SUITS? yer a fuking idiot..its the 60's!..ther suits.....fukin rule haha da fuck is yer guy's problem!@?! im fukin 17 an u cunts cant evn apreciate this for what it iz

  • one of my fav videos on youtube as well.. right when it hits 1:12..freakin Awesome! Neil just takes over!! Great job on the performance and gotta love Neils hair lol

  • haha,i love how Steven Stills is prancing with a stiff body and cowboy hat behind Neil Young,he pays no heed to this comedy ,Neil is so cool ,always, great band

  • eh its ok i hate the suits

  • his head IS the event of the season

  • Zotte sfeer.

  • I love Neil Young. Guy is a musical genius.

  • this is when white boys ran shit

  • HAHA,whiteboys ran shit? that's pretty funny whatever it means. Although it is a hell of a lot better than the hip hop and rap crap that's in the radio today. This music must make a come back.

  • I agree, but not only rap is bullshit rock, punk, and the rest of the music white artist are putting out today is bullshit. these guys back then were creative and made music to help people come together and end wars. the type of music we need now

  • I hope you're white, or that's a pretty racist comment. However, your point about music being BS today compared to then is accurate. But it's across the board as far as I'm concerned. It's not just the white people making bad music. Compare the best rap song (if there is one) with the worst Motown song, and the Motown song is STILL better. The Temps, Four Tops, Supremes all piss on anything going on today. And James Brown, what about him? All they can do today is sample him and recycle him.

  • This song just so Rocks

  • One of my favorite videos on Youtube. Steven Stills looks like he's having a blast!

  • ..that's funny, "toostupidtolive"!..(wuz gonna say, after that taste of that 1st Buffalo Springfield Greatest hit.."Who wants to be a man it's GUN!"...cool lyrics..'Is it strange I should change, 'Why Don't You Ask Her!)..butyernot.TooStupidToLove?!!!!

  • I really like " Mr Soul " - so underated !!! Regards.

  • dude fuck all u mother fuckers THIS IS THE BEST VIDEO ON YOUTUBE

  • Those who can't shoot off their mouths

  • This song (For what it's worth) is used in so many movies, inter alia: Forrest Gump, Lord of War. Nice tune!

  • Neil Young at his peak! ! ! Best song of his career and still able to smile.

  • That host is funny. After the song, he doesn't greet the band only the guy with his back to the audience. lol.

  • Classic piece of rock history. Gotta love the dance moves by Stills.

  • Man all those old Fender amps I would dream to have that gear.

  • I NO RITE

    THEYR FRIGGIN AWSUM

  • I have a '67 Bandmaster, and it's a true tone machine. 60's amps certainly are special.

  • Yes, it is lip synced the bass player is actualy their road manager. and they are not plugged in, their playing/singing doesnt match up, but they are still a kick ass band.

  • NEil Young is the god!!

  • It may be a "rip off" of Satisfaction, but who cares. It's so much better of a song.

  • so what if it ripped off satisfaction. lyricly and musically its much better

    x

  • The way I see it, they were just ahead of the times... nowadays the majority of pop music is ripped off of other pop songs and none of them are nearly as good as Mr.Soul or Satisfaction!

  • Hey, Richie, as you look back 30+ years, aren't you glad for the Love of Jesus Christ?

  • um...doesn't anybody hear the BLATANT rip-off guitar riff. all i can hear is the stones' satisfaction

  • Yes, thank you, I love the song but it pisses me off at the same time. It's the lyrics that really make the song anyway.

  • Tony Martin is alive and well and at 96 years of age still sings and entertains and has hotel gigs. It think Neil will still be rocking at that age!

  • Neil is a tall, cool drink of water!

  • Great video...Stills song was cut too short..Neil Youngs song still rocks...whats up with the host shaking hands with the dude with his back to the audience? The host was a loser!

  • pipefitter, The host was a winner, just of a different era. Stay cool and educate yourself.

  • If he was a winner why don't you mention his name...He didnt know who Buffalo Springfield was or the name of the song..."educate" us

  • Last of the old Hollywood musical actor-singers still alive, Tony Martin continues to perform on tour today. Two recent performances in New York City took place on October 21, 2007, and October 22, 2007, got good reviews. He told stories of his days in Hollywood performing alongside iconic names such as Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Rita Hayworth, Judy Garland, Lana Turner. He then performed noted songs from his career. If you look up Tony Martin singer, you will fimd alot on him. Talented.

  • where the hell is the bassist plugged in???

  • The bassist is plugged In to that cool little Fender Bassman stack at the back.

Wether the Bassman stack is actually plugged into anything is anybody's guess.

Still great though, thanks for posting.

  • no he isnt there are three guitarists and the one in the back is plugged in the half stack the bassist is in the front on a stool and it and i cant find out what he plugged into O_O

  • umm, dosent matter whaty they are plugged into, they are lip syncing lol cant you tell?

  • Who cares?

  • ya but still if your gunna fake you may as well fake professionally like the monkees did or hannah montana or lohan

  • yes , but i dont think they cared. The monkeys faked it cuz they generally sucked, so they had to make it look good. Buff. Spring/everything that Mr. Stills did and Young, was art. music so beautiful is considered by me to be art.

  • thats the album playing in background, they arent plugged into anyhting lol

  • It was lip synced

  • I'll tell ya what's funny, the host, (who seems like a total jerk)is not even remotely familier to me anymore, yet these guys went on to be musical icons for 40 years.

  • It's Tony Martin, whoo was a big star in the 50's.

  • I'm pretty sure they're miming but the Mr. Soul recording is slightly different from the one I'm familiar with (from Retrospective). Is that Mr. Soul from some other release?

  • This recording (inc. intro) is on Neil's retrospective "Journey through the Past". I always believed he included this to illustrate how such thought-provoking songs were presented as pop (silly intro, silly applause...).

  • Love that three guitar solo at the end of Mr. Soul. Not sure about the guitar´s make but seems like a Gibson ES something in Stills and the other player. They sound great, I can see why Clapton used it when he was in Cream, they sound really heavy. Now that I think about it would had loved that Clapton used that Gibson on the reunion concerts, not the Fender, but who cares. Great music all!!

  • Stills is playing a Guild and Neil Young is playing a Gretch. The 12 String is a Gibson and the Bass is a P-bass. FYI All Cool Guitars... I seen them with the Beach Boys in Detriot back a few years ago... haaa 1966-1967 whew I'm old..... Then naturaly our band started playing both songs...

  • Thank you colleague!!! Nice info, knew about the bass but wasn´t sure about those guitars. The song is full of nice details, mainly those two notes in every fourth bar, and I envy you very much sir, would had loved to be born earlier so I could see many of these groups live, just like you did. Must had been great experiences. Thanks.

  • Neil looks like he's wearing a wig

  • Great SONG !!!!!!

  • Mr Soul, definitely lip sync. Just like the record and it just ends. Who cares? Great record anyhow. Timeless clip, as all old ones.

Mr Soul is my fave by them!

  • yes

  • good songs....great

  • they had a pre-recorded bass track going. I'm sure they were in a fix with a live tv gig and no bass player.

  • The guy holding the bass with his back to the audience is the band's manager. He's miming the part. Their bass player Bruce Palmer had been arrested for possession of marijuana and had been deported to Canada.

  • mr soul sounds like can't get satisfaction

  • this is a great video ---- but i cant tell if they are lip-synching ? is neil on heroin ?

  • Riff guitar on 1.12 sound like Stones Satisfaction...!! GREAT...!! :)

  • is stills ...lip signing cuz i listened to the recorded version and it souds exacly alike

  • Is it just me, or does the opening shot look rather ominous? Here we have a song about the rock/counterculture confrontation with authority, and the faceless bass player is in shadow, his back to the camera, his shoulders hunched as he faces the lighted foursome in full pre-hippie garb. It seems almost like a symbolic standoff. Even the bass guitar resembles a weapon, the way he's holding it.

  • i wish they'd shut up in the backround

  • there is nothing cooler than neil young

    nothing

  • OMFG, there is nothing better than than the moment at 1:12. Seriously.

  • I think Mr. Soul guitar riff sounds more like Stones "I Can't Get No Satisfaction".

  • "Please no overtime". lol. that's funny.

  • dont let neil youngs haircut fool you! hahahaha

  • we are an american band...

  • The song is great, but this is playback.

    :(

  • neil looks like a mushroom

  • Neil rocks...Crosby,what happened-

  • That Mr Soul guitar riff sounds to me similar to "Long Cool Woman" by the Hollies. Is that Stephen Stills? Holy sh...if they were doing that kind of music at 22, then I don´t know what the hell I was doing at that age. Great.

  • Very oldies.

  • the drummer is the shit

  • That drummer would be Mr. Dewey Martin, he was another one of the drummers from the '60s who while not known for being flashy on the kit, WAS KNOWN for being solid as a rock and right on beat every time like Ringo Starr or Mick Avory from The Kinks.

  • This host is pretty funny. Who the heck is he?

  • Tony Martin, I believe. He was a popular actor and singer back then. He's still alive. This show, "The Hollywood Palace", was a variety show, like Ed Sullivan' show, but never had a permanent host. It ran from 1964 to 1970 on ABC, Saturday nights.

    Google is your friend.

  • dude neil young looks so.......young.

  • That's because he IS young - only 22. As is Stephen.

I just got tickets for Neil's concert in Winnipeg this October. Premium seats. Read that and weep. Hometown boy's coming home. I. can't. wait.

  • That is amazing. Neil Young is god!!

  • Neil looks a little like Elvis here. I saw a picture of Elvis with this same hairstyle and the sideburns. Elvis wore his hair like his back in those days when he wasn't making the movies.

  • who sings backing vocals in mr. soul?

  • Richie Furay did the backing vocals & rhythm guitar on the first recording in Jan '67 (which was on the Buffalo Springfield Again album) Stills was absent from that recording altogether.

I do think Stills was involved in the re-recording in April '67 tho.

    Corrections welcome if i'm wrong.

  • i didnt know neil young was in buffalo springfield

  • Mr. Soul sounds very reminisent of Satisfaction by the Stones..The main Riff does..Still sounds great though

  • I just posted a comment that maybe complements yours...sounds reminiscent of "Satisfaction" and also sounds very similar to "Long Cool Woman "by Hollies. Never heard this song before and it rocks. The solo is awesome.

  • whys the bass player sittin out in front facing the band?

  • Bruce Palmer (bass) kept getting deported back to Canada. On this TV show (Hollywood Palace) they had their non-bass-playing road manager hold a bass with his back to the camera, while miming to a prerecorded backing track lol..

Thats one way of getting round it I suppose.

  • that is their road manager faking it, as palmer had been deported by the usa. it's the old stu sutcliffe trick: "i'll just turn my back to the audience and it will look like i'm playing," only in this case no-one wanted his face to show apparently, i guess because he wasn't actually in the band, or maybe his outfit/look wasn't hip enough?

this is the rare mono version of mr. soul.

  • Now this is RocknRoll. Why can't people make music like this anymore. Todays music is a bunch of rap/hiphop crap singin about ho's and bitches. Bring back rocknroll.
