Believe it or not, former California Congressman Leroy Greene used this as his campaign theme song. I don't know whether the New Christy Minstrels knew this at the time or approved it.
Love these guys and the music. Really brings back memories from the 60's. For anyone in the Los Angeles/Orange County area during that time do you remember Tim Morgon at Socrates? Wish there were some video's of him. What a great folk singer, but at least we can still buy his albums/CD's from his website. Thanks for all the fabulous music.
@MrJackmelling That raspy voice belongs to Barry Mcguire. He's the guy that did Eve Of Destruction in '65. Check and see if you like. Take care.............
@capt777737 Dude seek help before you hurt yourself. You nutty mother fucker you should be put in the Wyoming nut house in Lander Wyoming in a padded room.
@capt777737 .22 Bwahahahahahahaha I use the little pea shooter to kill mice. Your weak you lowlife fucker Phil Realing lives in Wyoming and he raped his cousin.
@capt777737 Your a fucking faggot you Wyoming trash. Stop sending me messages wanting to be my friend, I hate queer fuckers. Do you want me to tell everyone your real name?, OK it is Phil Realing from Thermopolis Wyoming and he is the only openly gay man in that town. Phil go fuck yourself you fat fuck.
@capt777737 Is it true that you raped and molested your niece? I heard this from another youtuber. You should be ashamed by doing that to little kids. I hope the town you live in Wyoming gets ahold of this and runs your faggot ass out. Burn in Hell you fat fuck. I will let everyone know on youTube what a sicko pervert you are.
@capt777737 hey trailer trash phil realing from thermolis wyoming how are you racist poor toothless nigger? i found you in this shit hole town of thermolis wyoming, talked to some people there and they say your a sorry lowlife bum who fucked your little cousin, is this true phil realing? are you a redneck faggot who likes to fuck children? i will beat the fuck out of you when i get to thermolis, watch for me faggot.
If he could articulate a phrase like that on the day he was born, when did his speech deteriorate to the point when is became stammered and repetitive? Was it because he was dispassionate to his mother from birth? He hardly knew the woman and yet was so hard-hearted toward her. Furthermore, why did he not only have to sing about it, but encouraged others to join in? This song is taught as a childrens song. No wonder so many kids in the USA were confused in that era!
I didn't know this song was from the 60's I remembering hearing this on Philippine radio in the 70's. I didn't understand what it means except for the part "there isn't no woman who settle me down", I can relate to my unmarried cousin, finally he married though at age 40.
Thanks for sharing this, I used to love this song when I was kid. Does anyone else agree that Barry McGuire sounds like the late great actor Neville Brand?
I am ready faved it, and downloaded the mp3. It sure brings back memories,of,I hate to admit it,my childhood. Okay, laugh kiddie, but I know afew teen who love eric Carmenand his Raspberres, PLUS The Beatles.
Yeah, I can sing Green Green. Hahaha. With the windows closed.
I just found this hit right now. What memories this brings back to a simplier and happier time in life. Thanks for bringing this back for all of us to enjoy.
@ZeroEnergyDesign, app 17 comments ago, just enjoy the great song, but seeing you started Green Living; Al Gore uses more power in his house than an entire suburban block. George W Bush put pipes underground to heat his house in winter & to cool it in summer. The Talker & the Doer. Check it out on Snopes. Al Gore is set to make millions off carbon trading. PS Msg from down under, lighten up, enjoy the music, then go out & buy a Solar panel or 2 & start making a difference yourself.
Excellent words to warp the mind of a five year old... i loved this song when i was five and thinking back now, i wqonder if this is why i've pretty much lived my life like a leaf on the wind... "there ain't nobody in this whole wide world gonna tell me how to spend my time"... prolly one o the characteristics that friends will share about me is "you can't tell him anything". not a great personality trait :)
Dave here. The Showboat lounge. Misawa, Japan. (Yeah. A G.I. bar in "A.P. alley.") Music was played by the bartender. I requested "Green, Green" & Ray Conniff's "Besame Mucho" the first time I went there. Next time I showed up, and from then on, within minutes of my arrival, as, I'm sure, he did for the other music lovers. And then there was "Jean-
nie." She became a good friend. One of my best memories & greatest losses. "Dance, little Jean!" wherever you are.
In early '64 a bar in Misawa, Japan, called the Mayflower, like others in "A.P. Alley" had a record player behind the bar, rather than a juke box. They seemed to have every American LP known to man. I requested the Minstrels' "Green, Green" and Ray Conniff's "Besame Mucho," and they had them! Every time I went there after that, within five minutes, guess what they played. A girl, there, asked the one I was sitting with what kind of music "Besame" was and the answer was, "mudo music!" (Mood)
And You don't have 'the first clue' how to enjoy life, music & love. Foreign oil? oil wars? Hey Zero, you chose the correct name, a silly fuck, who can't enjoy the music, you piss on everything that is good about life. You're probably only a silly, 'child', how about, you come back with your childish comments, when you reach adult age! In the meantime you slimey pedantic asshole, "go home and get your fuckin' shine box" Asshole!!!
I just bought "The Best of the New Christie Minstrels" for my dearest and oldest friend for her birthday!! OMG...She freaked,,,said she was dancing in her kitchen and all the lyrics cane back into her head!!
Well, I've tried hunting for it, and can't find it at my, ahem, source. No way I'm going to a virus carrier, so, it's "Look For The Vintage Records Season" here.
Isn't it funny that something you hear at age four sticks with you all these years! It made me feel happy!
@paddyosee Yeah! Isn't that so cool? I need the mp3 but BearShare Lite isn't putting it up, and I do NOT trust another place that gives viruses. Oh, I'll link to here.
Fave bar!
Hey, I call myself Pattie in some places! Dad was a Dubliner.
@prettymom777 'Windows closed' - Uhm hmm; I can do Barry McGuire, but stand at the other end of the room, as, well... to make my pipes do that , well, the volume required would peel paint. Let's see some of those MTV enuchs do that. Without computer augmentation & a zillion overdubs (Annette Funicello, are you listening?).
Believe it or not, former California Congressman Leroy Greene used this as his campaign theme song. I don't know whether the New Christy Minstrels knew this at the time or approved it.

Almost half a century ago when the Christy Minstrels came to our
school and performed. The only popular groups
that Ever came to our school.
The Christy Minstrels were very popular. This was their biggest hit.
And "Today" written by the founder Randy Sparks was popular. It was
on a movie sound track. A young Kenny Rogers was a member of
the group.
So was Clarence Treat. Years later I played bridge w/ a guy who told me
Clarence had been one of his High School teachers.

posts in here are gettin' the big "Thumbs-Down"....
(along with a chorus of boos and jeers)
while the rest whom are posting great things about
this classic folk-pop hit, the band, with the legendary
folk-rock singer, Barry McGuire, gets the big "Thumbs-Up..
(with rounds of applause and cheers, to a rousing standing ovation)

Ahhhh, this brings back great memories, especially when I
was about 6 or 7 and visiting with some friends in Woodland, WA,
and I would hear this classic folk-pop hit, in 1966.
Nearly 40 years later, I've had the honor of meeting
Barry McGuire in person just before he his solo performance
at the Calvary Church here in Hamilton, MT,
during his spiritual tour in 2004. :)

I asked him if he would do a fundraiser for Sea Shepherd.
We have work out how to get him here, cause he don't get paid to sing anymore.
So he asked me for particulars. I will get in touch with with SSCS.
I made myself a new friend, and a famous one.
Write Barry thru his site, he'll write back.
