How many square feet (or meters) did the Palast der Republik have?
I walked past it on a visit to East Berlin in 1988. I should have followed my sense of curiosity and walked across the street and had a look inside. Missed my chance. Instead, I went up the dumb Fernsehturm. The Palast would have been much more interesting.
@ Hingis: the problem is our capitalistic government, here in germany. chancellor merkel and the others of her party do the best they can to erase the east-german history. for example: it still exists only one plaque, on which the former head of state of east-germany (erich honecker) is mentioned. the party of chancellor merkel requested to mill out the mention of its name.
they have fear of a renewed revolution, like in 1989.
I have a golden window from this building - with lots of photos of where it came from and how I aquired it. I think it was the smallest of the windows and weighs approximately 21 kilograms. There is a serial number that can be just seen between the double sheets of glass which should help to identify it's authenticity. Does anyone know where I can sell it ?
This place should have been preserved as a museum, being a museum itself. In the world's democratic countries people do not get asked what they want most of the time. The descision to demolish certainly came from above, influenced by America & Co.
The building contained Asbest. It had been cleaned from Asbest after 1990, but in early 00's, more asbest was found. Therefore, the Palast was no more. However, the Schloss will also be for the People of Germany from what I've read. Probably a lot more than the Palast would have been. With all due Respect.

they are going to rebuild the Berliner Schloss, which was torn down by the DDR in the 70s, on that spot.

Instead of making of the Palast der Republik a museum , they took the decision to destroy it : Dumb Germans. They have no sense of historical stuff !

Erich's Lampe Laden should have been preserved as a museum to the DDR Zeit.
