Never saw or heard of this tele-film and I am entranced. Of course Joanna Lumley is heaven in anything. She could sit and read the adverts in Punch and it would be entertaining. The whole cast is superb including Kate B. She I often find a bit bland or trying too hard but here she is quite in her element. Sarcastic and biting comedy. Christopher Bowen looking his charming self naturally as a good Libra does..... same birthday as me which means he is perfectly balanced LOL Thank you many times.
The book was a spoof, but very few people are old or well read enough to know what the spoofing was about. It parodies the works of writers like D. H. Lawrence, Thomas Hardy and the Brontë sisters.
It is good enough to stand alone though, and I agree with those who thought the acting was superb. Very well cast. Shame the girl playing Elfine didn't carry on with her acting career. She just 'disappeared'

This film truly showcases Kate Beckinsale's superb acting skills and shows that she could have been a terrific period actress instead of going to Hollywood and doing all those action blockbuster crap.
@27twentyseven27 Kate is a far richer, far more famous actress because of going to Hollwood, and she's done far more than just blockbuster action crap. Whether that matters or not, is anyone's guess. I'd suggest you check out Last Days of Disco, Snow Angels, Winged Creatures, Nothing But the Truth, Serendipity, The Aviator, and Click, if you want to see her in something other than blockbusters.
