They're all turned into animals by a spell from goodtooth, and it just so happens that in spirit they're all animals from the carnival of the animals (Oscar's a lion, Monty's a rooster, Sylvia's a little bird (admittedly, I think that's from peter and the wolf)etc. At the end Rebecca turns them back and turns thaddeus into a donkey, goodtooth into a bug, tank into a pig, and lucius into I think a spider.
