Rock Band 1 and 2 had only four pads to hit (red, yellow, blue, green) and 4 difficulty levels (Easy, Medium, Hard, Expert). The difference between easy and medium is that you have more notes to hit, expert having you hit the most notes, just like the real drum cover, only that the cymbals are mapped to Y, B and G with the toms. In RB3, the cymbals are charted differently, and you have to hit them separately.
