Thank you! Google just switched to "Google instant" on me and it wouldn't disable even after checking the box to opt out of it. Your fix works like a charm which is great because I liked google but was going to change over that major irritation.

Thanks for the tips. By disabling javascripts, I was able to get the page to wait until I hit enter to go to search results, but I'm still getting the drop down suggestions as I type. What other setting should I change under restricted sites/custom level? Thanks in advance.

@07098404 I'm using Firefox. No wonder it didn't work. But your Firefox fix did! Thanks so much. Unfortunately, it got rid of my fancy-shmancy google background image too. Can you think of a way to turn off autocomplete without turning off the apparently java based custom background image?
