When talking about EC (electrical conductivity), Also known as CF (conductivity factor) is to talk about the strength of your solution. Fresh water having a EC/CF of 0. It has nothing to do with your growing medium.

PH is a measurement of alkaline in the medium as on a scale of 1 to 14 with 7 been neutral and EC is a measurement of nutrient intake

Actually EC means "Electric Conductivity".

Basically EC meters show you how easily electricity runs through your water. More nutrients(or other impurities) you add more easily it runs through it raising the EC value.
