hey man u were talking about how ur fishes growth might have been stunted. if they are stunted, will they start growing again in a bigger tank like yours?
i like your setup! can i use fine white sand instead? i'm thinking of using that fine sand instead of rougher varieties to prevent injuries to my rays that i'm gonna put in my gar tank... ;/
Love it. I am trying to set something upself. However, I am seeing a problem. I have a LargeMouth, Perch, Channel and Bullhead Catfish. The problem is I am seeig marks on the Large Mouth and Perch(Bullying) prob at night from the catfish... I love all the fish and want to add more such as Pike and Small Mouth... any ideas how to keep the peace between these fish? I am thinking of getting a Koi or some other fish that will take the beating and let them live peacefully? All ideas ARE WELCOME!
@bmp902 Well I see nothing but problems there. The LMB will try to eat everything and so will the catfish, the perch is on the bottom of the food chain right now. The two other fish you want to add are the worst ones to try to add. SMB are territorial and will be very aggressive towards the other fish because of it and if you mean Norther Pike well its a viscous and nasty fish that will eventually try to kill everyone else in the tank as it gets bigger. If you want it to work build a BIG pond.
@chbgator Yeah, well I saw that you have a Perch with some Gar. Aren't Gar super aggressive also? I thought it was the catfish now I see he has some cuts on his fin. So basically everyone is picking on each other. I got a Koi to be the "Prey" Is your Perch still alive?
@bmp902 A koi will end up dieing from getting picked on so much and as the catfish, I say let em go and downsize on them. Do not get a pike, he will destroy every fish in the tank no matter what the size.
Bluegill are territorial and aggressive and will eat the cory cats and algae eaters and tear apart the crawfish if they are to big to swallow, I already tried that once.
Its sand from Home Depot. Paver leveling sand to be exact for patio pavers. Its really cheap I think I paid maybe $3 for per 50 lb bag. I have 400 lbs in the tank.
What is the substrate? Is it just regular sand or something else? I am wondering b/c I am thinking of a DIY and was thinking darker sand. But, I like the way the lighter substrate helps to lighten the tank.
lol yeah the tank was an SA tank and he somehow hid in the sand when I thought I removed all the former inhabitants when I had to completely drain the tank to get them out. Lucky for him I filed it back up shortly afterwards which was when I noticed him still in there.
Gars are illegal in some states more specifically the ones they are not native to but not in the US as a whole.

Wow very nice tank, although if I were you, I would have set it up as a dedicated gar tank.

im thinking about getting a gar, but will they eat shrimp pellets or just live food, cuz i only get live food once every month.

The only truely aggressive gar is an Alligator gar. Florida and Longnose are timid compared to alligator.

I was thinking of a 600G tank with only Bluegill, Cory Cats, Gold Algae Eaters, and maby some Crawfish.
Allthough Im not sure how long the crawfish would live.
I've been fishing all my life, and Bluegill are one of my favorite fish to catch.
I want to make the sand deep and put some rubble in it so they can make a nest if I can get them to breed.
Sound good?

cost was about $1500 to build the tank. Bass get to big and will out compete the other fish for food if they don't eat them first.

Awesome tank..always wanted a setup like this. Whats the price range?
You should get some bass in there.

Nice DIY aquarium.
A question
Do you fish these guys out of the local river or whatever or do you get them from somewhere else.
