Listening to this version of this hauntingly beautiful song actually moved me to tears - and being a man - I'll share that it made the hair on my arms stand. Don's rendition is almost non-chalant, but his is truly a master's voice with absolute control and effortless singing. There's a natural tone to his voice that's as tangible as it is so sensitively rendered - and overall as tender as this song could ever be sung. We can almost "touch" the yearning in his voice - a legend in his own right.

Although I play his CDs on a regular basis; I recently (re)discovered just how much I love this man and his music. Now I'm discovering a lot of his songs that I never heard him sung before...... and can't stop listening! Think McLean really enjoyed interrpreting music at a time when everyone was supposed to be a song writer. These days, most people write songs with nothing to day. McLean was unusual in that he had much to say, and transcendant lyrics. But he seemed to have stopped writing as a young man. Assume what happened with him is he stopped catering to his fans. His interpretations are nice, but others more creative on that end. And interpretation lost vogue anyway.

I grew up with Don Mclean in the 1970s

and respected him than. The more music I find of his on you tube the deeper my respect goes.  This is an immensly talented man who probably never got the respect that he deserved.
