Tom Waits is likely the oldest person in that town. I wonder what his story is? What is a fathom 900? Notice how (Eli) tests the lighter (as he cannot see it) before he hands it over. People must not have realized yet the benefits of cat oil. Wouldn't toys be essentially worthless in a Canticle For Liebowitz type society which has been thrown back to the dark ages? Was Tom's character setting up Denzel's character to be ambushed? If the Ozone Layer is gone, people will need more than sunglasses.
@LTCJ2006 Since he (Tom Waits character) was working for Carnegie, perhaps he was trying to get Eli (Denzel's character) to go across the street to be ambushed by Carnegies thugs. That's what they do, they ambush travellers and steal their belongings.
@aymthebest I agree, I think that's one of best bit on this movie.(and he gives it back to T Waits straight after with the gun pointing at himself still, so cool).I think I should start collecting those KFC hand cleaning thingie from now on just in case.
The lighter has been drinking, my trickle charger's asleep, the chapstick went back to New York, the cat oil has to take a leak.

He kept insisting and Eli kept declining.

@JackRussellTerrier2 OHHHHH, okay lol. I understand what you're saying. Maybe that's why he asked Eli "You don't trust me do you?"
