  • ~MORE IMPUT~

  • You could have demonstrated some current clamps too, that would've been neat.

  • COLLIN KICKS ASS

  • I am very happy to see the vidoe from you, hopefully the others also are happy for You an engineer's best friend

  • I Love The Video It Can Increase My Knowledge an engineer's best friend Learn how to measure resistance, voltage, current as well as test continuity using the Swiss Army knife of electronics

  • Good, I like that you share this video, I wish success always Learn how to measure resistance, voltage, current as well as test continuity using the Swiss Army knife of electronics.

  • Nice Video That You Share , So Very Nice Thanks You an engineer's best friend!

Learn how to measure resistance, voltage, current as well as test continuity using the Swiss Army knife of electronics

  • I Really Like The Video From Your Get acquainted with the Digital Multimeter - an engineer's best friend Learn how to measure resistance

  • Your Video Is Very Useful Sharing current as well as test continuity using the Swiss Army knife of electronics

  • That guy looks like a yound Isaac Asimov.

  • You're a very cool guy.

  • I thought that PCB looked familiar. It's Music From Outer Space's Weird Sound Generator PCB. I haven't gotten around to building mine yet.

  • 10 people don't have multimeter xD

  • Lose the music. Otherwise good stuff

  • I just had a job interview where they asked me how to operate the Fluke multimeter. The day before I reviewed this video and aced the interview. They even tested me on how to take readings on a resistor. Thanks man!!!!!

  • great tutorial!

  • Y not just lick the 9volt battery

  • is that your led color organ but you made a short just for the video

  • you should make a "make presents: the datasheet" :)

  • acording to my calculations ,when this video hits 88 dislikes, your gonna see some serious shit

  • what model multi meter, price and where you got it thanks!

  • lol at that PERFECT soldering

  • Great teaching, I,m learning a lot. Thanks. Can you do some teaching on Diode Lasers and photo resisters? Thanks.

  • I just bought a multimeter today, now I know how to use it properly. Thanks bro.

  • I love this guy.

  • I love you Collin! You're so good, you know what it's important to know and how to get it across in a wonderfully amusing way.

  • I think I would really like to see you do a video how to make a multi-meter. Eddy current material testing instruments would great as well. From there perhaps a CRT and a Digital oscilloscope could be done so that the next project of making a ultrasonic testing instrument could be done with a display. Perhaps I missed something, and you have already done articles on these projects?

I am just setting out to make these instruments myself, and I want to do it from the ground up.

    Thanks.

  • 555 timer! do it!!! please :P

  • @asdfghjkl2222 Yes ! Please a 555 tutorial :)

  • *beep* dammit! gotta remove the solder... again...

  • I love this guy!

  • Thank You GRANDPA!

  • @hugo33100 lol :)

  • you are freaking fantastic lol. thanks for the video. it just simplifies things so nicely

  • you should make your own channel.

  • 8 people can't use a multimeter

  • @jaymanbuzz89 10 pepole

  • That is the most awesome multimeter I have ever seen!

  • Oooooohhhhhh! Wow did I have that horribly wrong!!! Thanks just for a heads up you look smokin in that suit;)

  • LYRICALSLIDESHOW

  • You just explained a lot of things that I sometimes struggled to perceive. Thank you.

  • Fine then, but its not what the world needs to know about! I want you to make me a gadget that will set the TV volume in a specific range where it magnifies whispers so that I can hear them, and dampens loud stuff (like screaming commercials!). I want it and I want it NOW! Couch Potatoes of America will give you the Nobel!

  • @Bently100 Thats called an audio compressor, I use one on my EMU soundcard to do just what your talking about.

  • you should tech us oscilloscope!

  • What are the diagrams/pics on the wall behind you?

  • DO A FLUX CAPACITOR !!!

  • @tomattosfutleimierda pretty sure a Flux cap dosnt exist....

  • Comment removed

  • @uptilwhen i know , it was just a joke :c

  • @uptilwhen Its easy to make a Flux capacitor, all you need is an inductor and a capacitor. This creates a tuned LC circuit that stores energy that is oscillating at its resonant frequency. This is particularly useful in applications such as amplifiers, filters, RFID and time travel. So you can thank Doc Brown for inventing one of the best circuits in existence.

  • @legomaniac150 Well, I'll defer to your superior level of knowledge. Tuned circuits sound like lots of fun. I must learn more I must learn more I must learn more..... ;)

  • Do linear spasmodulator!

  • Do Oscilloscope!

  • the problem of digital multimeters is that they mesure current even if there's not..

  • Fwiw, measuring a battery's voltage does not necessarily indicate that it's "definitely usable."

Batteries must be checked "under load" so a special battery tester (which many meters have these days) must be used.

I'm just getting back into electronics after a many (many!) year absence, and other than this little nitpick, this was a useful refresher course for me; thanks!

Well, one last thing. Personally, I wouldn't touch the live circuit when measuring current ...

  • A multimeter = an engineer's best friend, you = my best friend

  • Comment removed

  • @MeMyselfAndMyStuff awwwww lol XD

  • DO OSCILLOSCOPE

  • 3:44 who's soldering is that lol?? Its all huge globs. I'd be surprised if there wasnt a short anywhere else ;)

  • Good video. Very straightforward for the technically-challenged.

  • Do a MAKE presents : The Oscilloscope

  • Is this guy from the Matrix? ;)

    Good job explaining it all.

  • makes me wish i could afford a fluke

  • @canuckscottsmen A Fluke meter is really nice, but there are many others on the market for fair prices that will do you justice. I have a basic manual ranging multimeter that has a happy home on my workbench. If you really want a Fluke, keep an eye on EvilBay and be patient. I got am $800 Metcal soldering iron for $300 a while ago.

  • Hardcore nerd

  • This guy looks like an elitist electronics hipster. Just sayin.

  • this is one great video, thanks

  • Thank you very much, super helpful

  • You should do another couple of these on Soldering Irons and heated and unheated de-soldering irons please

  • I lked the way you tested current by holding your finger on the opened wires. A new student would be like"Ok ok I just need to hold these two together....ZAP ... na nope no never messing with that again."lol

  • @Toefuy with that low voltage it wont even tickle...

  • collin u should make a video a week or something u rock

  • Sidebuuurrrrnnnnnnnnnnnnsssssaaaasasasasasaa...

  • This guy rocks!!!

  • Collin, I want your tie!

  • sweet i'm gonna make one

  • i still remember when i blowed up like 5 multimeters in one year just because of mesuring current :D

    gives a nice laud bang.

  • AN electrical engineers best freind. Im a mechanical engineer and i love my calcumalatorz :)

  • damn i want that multimeter *___*

  • mooooooooooorrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeee videooossss!

  • That was helpful, thanks!

  • What about Fluke. Mastech makes cheopo Chinese DMMs that do not compare with Flukes DMMs.

  • it looks like he should have a british accent

  • Comment removed

  • Forever Alone...

  • Great video! I guess the autoranging multimeters are a lot more expensive than than manually ranged ones, am I right?

  • Another great feature to a common multimeter would be one which can test current (amps) with a clamp. A clamp on meter is very useful, because there is absolutely no physical contact with electrical wiring and no need to worry about potential shock.

    Great video too!

  • getting insulated alligator clamps (little ones) are very helpful when measuring a few things.

  • Understood the first 9 seconds. After that it was lost

  • Nice suit!

  • Thanks, I love watching theses vids but I have no idea how to do any of it. Some times I just need some basic instructions!

  • :-O i never heared the name MULTIMETER XD

  • AVO-meter

  • that is an awesome meter. just sayin.

  • My professor did a horrible job teaching me how to measure current i blew three fuses in my multimeter before I figured it out.

  • you teach so much better than my professor. you should teach.

  • @spedknot Isn't it what he's doing? =D

  • @AlexandrePoulinProd ha, your right, would be better if he was my professor though :(

  • @AlexandrePoulinProd ha, your right, would be better if he was my professor though :(

  • @spedknot i believe he is teaching

  • @spedknot if I remember right he did...

  • @spedknot What? He is ugly and boring

  • @spedknot why i bet you anuthing that he makes more than a teacher with his current job aswell as donations and other stuff

  • @spedknot he does... (us)

  • @spedknot

    He does, through youtube.

  • @spedknot he is

  • I love this series :)

  • Thumbs up for auto-ranging yay!

  • Colin FTF'nW! We all should know that already!

  • i think i'm going to buy a cheap multimeter, can be always handy to find problems at home or in the car

  • Colin rules, best host on this channel so far.

  • @acalora123 don't forget Bre Pettis

  • @Shockszzbyyous Absolutely. Wish he would come back to MAKE.

  • Multimeters, even an amazing setup, aren't that expensive. I personally carry/use a Fluke hand held O-scope.

  • Damn, The subject I love but I don't like the teacher and the difficulty of it that is PHYSIC & this is a needed tool for school experiments but too bad that schools just doesn't feel what we want!

  • What will they think of next?

  • yay colin is back XD

  • Finally a good, informative video! Great!

  • @dummerbube You only should have explained it with the manual multimeter since the most viewers wouldn't buy one of those expensive automatic-settings-multimeters...

  • lol this guys awsome

  • I bought a manual ranging multimeter on ebay for a total of £2.

only £0.90 of that was the multimeter, the rest was shipping from China.

And it works well, very, very well!

  • you should do an oscilloscope next!

  • @cimjoeino great idea - I never understood them - neither in school nor in college...

  • @cimjoeino

@afrotechmods has an excellente channel, and he has a osciloscope tutorial ;)

  • WHat is the part number of that PCB board holder on the begining of the video?

  • i have that exact same manual multimeter

  • very nice !

  • thank you sir.

  • somebody please just touch me already!!!

  • This I need to learn to check my VW bugs electrical. It's a 1964 so it can be like a haunted house. Things work then they don't,...

  • Dang, that meter even lights up to tell you where the probes should go! You kind of eluded to it didn't really come right out and say that resistance and current can't be measured without breaking the circuit. (Something you really wouldn't want to do if the circuit is already soldered together.) Other than that it's really good!

  • hEY! Can you show How to test transistor!!! ;D

  • @Demoman42 youtube.com/results?search_query=How+to+test+a+transistor+&aq=f

  • nice tie

  • my goodness yesterday i was watching all of your "make presents" thinking the series has ended ......thanks alot i m very happy

  • Comment removed

  • The intro sounds cool when the Bass and Subwoofers are connected lol

  • who gives a crap..

  • Thanks Collin!

  • This helped me a lot with school!

  • We want more of those Mr Collin !

    Collin + Kipkay = MakeMagazine

  • Colin you are my hero. My only question is WHY didn't you have this uploaded a day prior? Now I got to go dig through frozen trash to get my circuit back lol!

  • CC FTW

  • Colin is make magazine :)

  • if you buy a new 1 don't go for the 5$ promo :)

unless you only want to measure a safe voltage (like in most electronics)

the 5$ one won't give good protection if you chortcircuit your meter (aka it might go BOOM :p )

  • Fancy tie, lookin' great Collin.

  • Type PRIZE before youtube and hit enter

  • great vid

  • That multimeter is quite fancy. It must have cost a lot.

  • @lodevijk I have the same exact multimeter and im 14, they cost a fortune but my dad got it for me from his work

  • @lodevijk you can get it for like $10

  • @lodevijk 30 bucks.

  • @lodevijk ProTek is actually one of the more reasonable mid-to-high end DMM manufacturers on the market and the 6300 model is only about $80 online. This is quite reasonable for a autoranging meter with the features it has built in. However, sometimes you just have to be close and you don't know if it will damage the meter or not... That is when I reach for the Cen-Tek. It is the lowest of the low end. It will work, but you might not get super-accurate results. Happy Hardware Hacking!

  • @lodevijk not really, we have whole boxes full of them at 6th form

  • @lodevijk I have this meter myself. It's actually a pretty good buy, I bought my for $35 from a retail store.

  • @lodevijk Harbor Freight has the knockoff clone of that meter for about 40 bucks, Item #98674

  • @lodevijk The meter he has is about $80, a good Fluke will run you $200-$400.

  • @crashman2600 can you name a good brand name for me?

  • I don't know what it is but Collin you are so easy to learn from

  • Colin do you have your own channel on youtube like Kipkay has? I would like to subscribe :O ten times!

  • Great stuff!!

  • I gotta be honest, the only time ive found a voltage meter handy was installing my truck stereo system lol...

  • always very useful info, thank you for posting

  • So many buttmad KipGay fans always hating on Collin.

  • In my opinion you always make the best vids on Make, thanks as always. Also does anyone else think that intro and outro music is from the old flash game Motherload (The one were you had to drill for ore)?

  • awesome! thanks! Ive been waiting for ever forever for another video.

  • this sucks

  • @kc88kc , You Face sucks
