  • Does anyone know where to find more information about this advert?

  • I have both been suicidal + studied psychology + I think it's really irresponsible for the Samaritans to claim they can help people with problems that serious just with basic listening counselling. Giving people a chance to express feelings + talk about their problems openly is great. But suicidal + mentally ill people need proper therapy.

  • @LLydarth

    Samaritans are irresponsible?

What, for offereing people a chance to talk about their problems in confidence?

Sams does not claim to be offering "proper therapy" to the mentally ill - they are not claiming to be"proper therapists" they are VOLUNTEERS who are trained in listening skills.

There is a difference. A massive difference.

  • @tinylove1979 The Samaritans advertising (including this very video!) usually suggests that they are for suicidal people. I think (as I said in my comment!) that it'sgreat for people to be able to talk about their problems. It's just that they shouldn't imply they can help people with serious mental health problems. There IS a massive difference between Samaritans + therapists but they + their advertising don't make that clear.

  • thats my brother in this vid i cant believe i found it!

  • I've contacted the Samaritans before about something which charities like Childline WOULD pass on. However, the Samaritans didn't. They are confidential.

  • Samaritan policy in the UK does vary slightly by region. But it is wholly confidential unless a volunteer is taken to court by sopoena to give evidence, eg multiple suicide etc, A good volunteer will not take enough information to be able to find you, it is not the purpose or the interest of the Samaritans. A good volunteer will also point out to you that if you decide not to take your life, then you should call the ambulance yourself, then the ambulance dispatcher can locate you easily.

  • Are you a "Samaritan"?

  • I tried to send you an email just now. But you had friend lock on, so couldn't. Anyway dont worry, I think you may have mixed Samaritans up with Befrienders International on that other video we both watched. They are seperate organisations.

    Take it easy.

  • Unfortunately people lie and Reality is very different to what the organisation would like to portray but thats the World for you I guess.

  • Yes people lie. Samaritans as an organisation is aware of that, and it's not about weedling out liars and cheats. I'm not sure what you mean by reality being a very different one to what the organisation would like to portray - Samaritans is not trying to portray reality as anything - your world is probably totally different to mine, etc. and so it goes on. Samaritan volunteers are there to listen - that's it - and it really helps a lot of people get through some very dark times.

  • The comment below is untrue, The samaritans will offer help and if during an attmpted suicide you indicate you have changed your mind they will encourage YOU to contact the emergency services. But if you have determined that you want to die by suicide they respect that too and will accompany you for as long as you are concious and even if there is silence after loss of conciousness. I repeat the comment below is nonsense.

  • If a person is a danger to themselves OR Others they can be sectioned "Completely Confidential is not true in its entirety.

The Samaritans by Law have to intervene where possible.

  • You are implying that the services can in some way track you down using your phone, that is simply not true. and a samaritan volunteer should not ask for your identity in any way. Therefore you are confidential. As I said before if you change your mind and request help of course they will encourage you to call an ambulance yourself and if you ask them to do so they will call it for you but not by their own decision.

  • So assuming "Sophie" is mentally ill and has just taken one big overdose and she rings The Samaritans as she "Crosses Over" as she does not want to be lonely they will listen to her ramblings as the drugs take effect and the Samaritan Volunteer will just hang up the phone end of the matter.......

  • Yes, the volunteer will wait until there is no further sounds for a period, up to their own discretion, then and hang up.

  • That's completely untrue!

  • God Bless to anyone who volunteers as a Samaritan. You truly are great people.

  • this guy looks familiar.

  • This is ace. Thanks for putting it up.

  • HA! This is my brother! I've got this on dvd but its class that its on here aswell! :-)
