It is a dance, witchypoo! Give them too much room, and they may not obey some of the worthy "rules" of fiction. Don't let them speak, and you're too controlling. Sounds like you have a good balance.
I find that I have that problem only in revers. It seems like there are details that i wanna stretch out that i don't want stretched out, so I wind up going back and adding more detail, and feeling, and what ever I or my characters feel need to be added. This is my first book, and I an just winging it really, so I'm letting my characters sort of take me by the hands and lead the way so to speak, and it's quite fun for me to do that, but also I'm learning when I need to do some of the leading.
