Tony MacApline is awesome, His fusion stuff is brilliant! I've seen him play as a part of Steve Vai's band numerous times both live and on DVD. It was jaw dropping to see 2 monsters trading off licks!
In my 6 and half years of playing, i've never heard of this guy until about an hour ago, and my god... what a brilliant musician!! He has the most excellent phrasing and melodic ideas i've ever seen. I really want to study this guy more and understand how he plays. Can't wait to learn songs by Tony MacAlpine

Well, let's be realistic... he is VERY good musician, but not great art-creator. Planet X... what I listened from there was album hugely based on improvisation, influenced with Dream Theater's Awake. Not a single song that caught my attention. So, what is good Planet X song that I should listen for?

Just for the record folks: Vai is not better than Tony MacAlpine. Vai is about tricks and effects as he is experimental as is Satriani. That's not to say that the's not a good player. He's not in the same league as Tony Mac, Vinnie Moore, Jason Becker,Friedeman,Loomis
I've just been watching a video of Robert Marcello before watching this. Robert is very very good but there is just something special about the way Tony plays. For me Vinnie Moore, Yngwie and Tony are the top three but Jason Becker and P Gilbert are there too. But I would check out Rob Marcello too as he's very musical like Tony.

I don't really have a favourite any longer as all these guys are as good as each other it's just down to preference now. Yeah JB is/was fantastic and it's a shame what's happened to him. The best would be to have an album with tracks from them all as a compilation.

Awesome just awesome one of my favorite guitar players/composers. BTW people who listen to heavymetal/hardrock music should be the most open minded people in the world. Fuck racism I makes me sad that fellow metalheads think that way.

@sampraz1990 LOL. No, from about 1982 to 1995, Tony MacApline used to grow his hair long. He cut it sometime before the album Premonition, as you can see he had a "fade" haircut on the album cover. Now he shaves it even lower, or completely bald.

Well, let's be realistic... he is VERY good musician, but not great art-creator. Planet X... what I listened from there was album hugely based on improvisation, influenced with Dream Theater's Awake. Not a single song that caught my attention. So, what is good Planet X song that I should listen for?

macalpine has a long discography and many great music even in my opinion Mcalpine is better than satriani and Steve vai i belive he is no consider a great one just because his a black guy whit a guitar.
remenber waht happened to hendrix he wasnot cosider a great guitarrist until he moved to England there he was the greatest in that time, is a shame to tony macalpine.

He is not considered to be great one because he sucks as composer.. His biggest point in career was "Maximum Security" in '87, considering time of release.
And then... compare that with one "Surfing with the Alien" from the same year.

Just for the record folks: Vai is not better than Tony MacAlpine. Vai is about tricks and effects as he is experimental as is Satriani. That's not to say that the's not a good player. He's not in the same league as Tony Mac, Vinnie Moore, Jason Becker,Friedeman,Loomis

I've just been watching a video of Robert Marcello before watching this. Robert is very very good but there is just something special about the way Tony plays. For me Vinnie Moore, Yngwie and Tony are the top three but Jason Becker and P Gilbert are there too. But I would check out Rob Marcello too as he's very musical like Tony.

I don't really have a favourite any longer as all these guys are as good as each other it's just down to preference now. Yeah JB is/was fantastic and it's a shame what's happened to him. The best would be to have an album with tracks from them all as a compilation.

I went to go see UFO, which Vinnie Moore is now the guitarist for. They were fucking amazing and Vinnie ripped out a 10 min solo. It was epic!
