  • i liked it @ 4:26 wen Lowry checks his note and .. 4:46 i guess i need not explain why .. man im jealous of the friendship these guys shared...

  • Mark Lowry checks out his bass singing like J.D. on 4:26

  • props to Jeffrey Lavelli (spelling?) for a brilliant performance. Beautiful southern gospel run on the organ. I know JD was a beast and commanded performance...and he deserved it, but the magic of voice and instrument together can't be undermined. God Bless everyone. (especially Larry Ford)

  • WTF???? 4:30

  • This was classic. Loss of fun. Thanks.

  • muito bom

  • It good see them haveing fun too.because Jesus like laugher

  • Great song. RIP JD.

  • JD and George were two of the best Bass singers the world has ever known.

  • wonderful, wonderful!

  • He got irritated from the 1st time the organ interjected cos he lifted his head briefly bt i guess the second time was jus too much.seems every1 was on this thing, am i rong?

  • JD is my cousin! Sadly, I never got to meet him! But his voice was unlike any other

  • jd sumner was the greatest bass of all time. i love hearing tim duncan sing, dont get me wrong, but he could never touch the low notes of mr. jd sumner

  • there is not a bass singer i belive better then sumner

  • No one can sing like a bass like j.d , george , tim i love my bassists

  • I've watched this video numerous times and just noticed that Ed Enoch was sitting to the left of JD Sumner, who Elvis always called "The Greatest Voice In Gospel Music" and I have to agree!

  • @vipor3D I believe at one time he was J.D.'s son in law and J.D. left him to own and lead the Stamps.

  • This is so funny

  • Larry Ford a beast?????????????? Why?

  • @debbiedamoose lol i meant it as a good thing

  • JD was a beast at the bass vocals. That was awesome!!

  • god love him rip

  • 1:39, shes shocked.

  • Larry Ford is the highlight of this video. No contest.

  • Larry ford is a beast

  • see Gordon Stoker there also

  • Does anyone know what the Note was that J.D. hit on the word "You" at the end of the song?....

  • @red3005 A smoking E1 at the end of his slide.

  • The Gaithers Look at Bill's hair how much he had. Wonderful. There are so many that have gone on to Heaven. Looking forward to seeing them there

  • it's the early Gaithers

  • Thanks for letting me know about the lady in green. I've never heard her sing. I'm sure she's wonderful, or Bill wouldn't have her in the "group". It's just that from the look on her face, she seems confused. She just seems somewhat out of place. Maybe she's as confused as JD. Thanks again.

  • This is HYSTERICAL!

  • Wow!!! That's great! The look on J.D.'s face is priceless. Isn't that Ed Enoch to J.D.'s right? This video is wonderful. Thanks for posting it, Hoover.

  • thts george younce next to larry ford

  • EVeryone knows how Mr. Stamps did not like organs. Bill and the group set him up for this one. Priceless.

  • 10 people missed the like button.

  • @thoughtfinder : probably for the shirts of Larry Ford, the guy at 2:26 ant at 3:55 ^^

  • i like when the women with the red hair stairs and opens her eyes to a surprise i busted out laughing and the guy singing the sort low notes is very very very goooood!

  • That "infamous" clip is great. I enjoy watching it. It adds something to the clip, like humor.

  • Elvis sang this in the cd Million Dollar Quartet.

  • the lady in the green in this video is cynthia clauson. she has a very expressive face and a beautiful voice.

  • understand about the organ, i dont like them either..

  • that was great.

  • My dear aunt passed away today.

I have spent the day putting inspirational songs on my facebook in her memory . This is the first time that i have laughed today. Thank you so very much.

  • My dear aunt went to be with Jesus today. I love the old time gospel songs. I try to find some inspirational music to put on my facebook.

This is the first time I have laughed all day.

Thank you for affording me a few minutes of laughter, in the midst of my grief.

  • My father was a tenor singer, choir director, and teacher. As he got older, he used to cup his hand behind his ear just like JD Sumner does in this video in order to hear himself better and get it right.

We tried to get him to use a hearing aid, but it amplified the background noises and he found those noises distracting.

So I can understand JD finding the organ difficult.

  • at first hand i think this is how americans look like, plastic and everyone wears a wig, overweight and silly clothing, but then irealise its just a room full of love and i relly liked watching this:) lol cool when jd turns his head ha ha

  • Beautiful Amen

  • From which Homecoming DVD is this song? Not all of the Gaither Videos are available in India. I hope they will be, sometime soon. Thanks for posting this one.

  • My Mothers theme song.

  • never knew southern gospel had so many greats i feel so blessed to be able to hear their songs

  • muito bom,mmmmmmmmmm

  • bahahaha look at that lady in the green at 4:30-4:35. hahaha her face is priceless!!

  • @tararucker22 lol it is priceless!

  • @tararucker22 lol i was gonna say the same thing

  • @tararucker22 Gotta agree about the lady in green. Who is she? I watch this video often and she drives me crazy! Ick.

  • @debbiedamoose the lady in green at 4:30 is cynthia clawson. beautiful singer.

  • @tararucker22 That's Cynthia Clauson, and she probably thinks JD sounds more like

a foghorn just then than a human!

  • @tararucker22 That lady is Cynthia Clawson...One of the purest female singers in Gospel music.

  • jd sumner brought real gospel tone to elvis show. he did gospel and he did rock n roll. he had talent. cstanchik

  • Great Video, thanks for posting :)

  • This is beautiful music, if you didn't grow up with it you missed out :)

  • If you didn't grow up with gospel then you missed out! This is some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard :)

  • I have a 1985 edition of Guinness Book of World Records where J.D. Sumner was listed as lowest note recorded by anyone. He personally signed it for me when he and the Masters 5 came to sing at our High School.

  • u just gotta luv the old folks an JD. what wonderful music it is..

  • A melhor voz Do Mundo !!!!!!!!!

  • I can't think of a guy Elvis respected more than J.D.......r.i.p both

  • When JD said he didn't want an organ at his funeral, I wonder if he did. If they did I'm sure he just looked down from heaven shaking his head.

  • just as requested, they did not have an organ at his funeral. lol

  • bill said that JD did not have the organ at his funeral.Look for rembering JD,

  • @Fooberedo I can just hear JD "I told 'em!"

  • @Fooberedo people can NOT look down from a PERFECT Heaven on a SINFUL world.............

  • @Fooberedo They sure did not have an organ at his funeral

  • beautiful organ rendition...i know JD was a beast, but this is the epitome of voice and instrument. God bless JD.

  • I actually had the honor to meet J.D. I can sing a low bass C note and he HE told me I had a great voice and I couldn't even say thank you, I was so awe struck just to see him, he forever in my mind will be the greatest of them all

  • This is a great comedy. It is hilarious.

  • My husband and I saw Squire in 1995 at a concert. He prayed for him, he had MS. we met Squire in the hall, since we had to leave early. My husband is now in heaven waiting for us all.

  • Some how I get the feeling JD Sumner didn't like organ music.

  • I m a basso at my church and i pray to god to sing like JD...gbu all

  • J.D. Sumner was one-of-a-kind. We

will never hear another one. Only thing

about those super low "basso profundo"

notes is that at a certain pitch the human

voice ceases to be "musical" and takes

on more of a "foghorn" sound, which

    Sumner could produce effortlessly.

  • However, Tim Storms is the exception. His problem is we just can't hear as low as he can sing, period :)

  • The organ goes into the next phrase by keeping the established tempo and plays the notes for "he will" before JD has finished singing "he will..."

Holding one ear (pressing slightly) allows you to not only hear yourself better but to also drown out other noise thus staying on or hearing the pitch better.

  • JD just didn't particularly like organs that's all...

  • Anybody who has ever been in a church

choir KNOWS hilarious stuff like this happens a LOT! It all goes with the

    wonderful fellowship of God's singers.

We miss you, JD, but not for long!

  • Well, he was'nt quiet enough for JD's liking. However, the organist is fantastic and wouldn't be sitting there if he was'nt a great player.

  • WHAT did the organist do???

This is one of the funniest clips I have ever seen! I LOVE seeing people laugh this hard!

  • I think JD didn't like the sound of an organ. I could be wrong, but that's what I've heard in regards to this.

  • JD just simply didnt like organs. The organist was just playing and messin with JD.

  • From 1966-1970-ish, JD carried a live band along with the Stamps quartet. They were a hot band. But, JD made sure they did'nt play over the singers. Play great Intros and instrumentals but don't over play and overpower the singers. JD's bass guitarist Tim Baty found out the hard way. On one of JD's recitations (after days of warning) Tim continued to overplay. JD just began to unwind every string on the bass guitar. IN CONCERT!! The audience thought it was a joke. It was'nt!!

  • he is doing his fantastic, incredible low E by doing it better than anybody. He could sing off the piano..but never did in any recorded or live performance.. he just thought it was'nt musical. He was even clearer and better between 1956-1959. Just a God given gift.

  • Does anyone know what the Low Note is that J.D. sings in this song?

  • a think it E

  • @davidutu that's right

  • I really enjoyed this. It lifts your spirit.

And the pianist and organist are great.

  • what year did he sing this does anyone know

  • it helps u hear ur part better so u can tune the low notes

  • J D Sumner was fantastic- love his reaction to the organist-

  • This was the very first song I sang in church....and it was the 2nd song I learned to play on the piano......I love this song and hearing the gathers do it is AMAZING!!!!

  • why does everybody laugh at 2:56 ?

I dont understand, I'm from Germany

  • When JD was doing his bass-voice solo, the organist began to play, getting himself above the bass singer. Hilarious^^

  • u don't interrupt a bass during his solo especially when it is the great JD Sumner

  • INDEED, WOW what a voice, he sings wiht the lords angels NOW

  • listen the organ not the piano

  • jd gets annoyed at the organist

  • why does JD always sit with his hand like that by the ear when he sings?

  • he holds his hand up to his ear to hear himself singing, most bass singers do, i do, if you notice bill gaither does as well, and i think rex neelon.

  • So you can tune out all the other parts and pick out yours

  • @Krill3Z Sometimes you have to do that to hear yourself sing that low. I've seen some baritone singers do it because its such a complex part but its mostly bass singers I've seen do it.

  • is Glen Payne still alive

  • no he passed away several years ago

  • how sad =( he was a great singer

  • @hoover4000 as a matter of fact it was either september r october of 1999 when glen payne died

  • Thanks for this Trialpha! Praise the Lord! Our politicians need to know there is a higher authority -- much higher.

  • Then the same day on you tube I typed in JD Sumner and was listening to this video.I don't know why but I started to ponder the same question while listening to this video and I started to cry.I've come to the conclusion I can never deny god as no one can be certain god does not exsist.I'm going back to church.

  • Praise God for your conclusion. He never gives up on us, even when we allow doubt to cause us so many heartaches. J.D., Larry, and all the other dedicated singers and musicians are thrilled to know they have played a part of one coming home. Just Have A Little Talk With Jesus daily and it will all come out all right.

  • This morning when I was getting ready to leave my house I actually felt a strong desire to pray before I left I started my day.And real desire to pray that drew me into talking with God.That is something I haven't had in a long time being that I was leaning towards atheism. That desire comes from God alone. He creates that desire in us.What an expirence.

  • Thanks and Praise the Lord, Trialpha! We need this back in our government. Our politicians need to know there is a higher authority -- much higher.

  • Thanks for this Trialpha. Praise the Lord!

  • For awhile their I thought I was an atheist even leaned heavily towards it.Then for some reason yesterday while driving my car I found myself qsking a very tough question. If I were on my death bed or knew I was dying could I say for certain I would answer to no god? After pondering this I realized nothing in this life is certain but death itself. And noone can say for certain their is no god.

  • nice note of the piano

Considerada a voz mais grave do mundo a serviço do Senhor. Belissimo.

  • Ann downings face is priceless when he hits that low note.

  • Mark enjoyed JD getting annoyed by the organ

  • Isn't it great that we serve a God who loves when His children laugh and have fun?

  • is glen payne dead. i hope not

  • yes he is

  • JD was a good man with alot of heart and character, as well as a great bass singer :)

The funny thing about this clip is that that JD himself, sounds like was trying his best to not laugh as he started singing again, whilst everyone else was laughing :) lol

Thank you so much for posting this, top rating always and added to faves :)

    God Bless

  • Sensacional!

  • Hoover4000, Thanks for the hours of creditable entertainment you have provided on this site. It has been a blessing to me!

  • did mark say "we're too white for that"? lol

  • Hey said, "He's way too white for that", referring to jd hahaha

  • what's the name of this video album??

  • i believe it's either from Landmark or All Day Singing.

  • My favorite part happens around 4:30! That guy had a real talent...

  • looks like Mark Lowery was having fun! you got to see the tribute when they show this clip and larry gatlin's chorus no organ music at JD'S funeral!

  • I love Larry Ford in this one.

  • I LOVE Larry Ford in this one.

  • I love the contrast of Larry Ford's crisp, clear, high voice and the deep, guttural, woofer voice of the all time great bass, JD.

  • wow that voice is so deep. I could swear that I remember hearing him on record as a kid.

  • I notice that none of the stamps music has organ in the mix

  • J S PLAY WITH ELVIS IN THE EARLY YEARS

  • When Larry Ford is doing his verse, you can definitely tell that's not Bill playing the piano!

  • they show bill playing while Larry's singing?

  • Who was the guy in the center from 3:55 to 3:57?

  • i think taht is howard goodman

  • That is indeed Howard Goodman.

  • It is Howard Goodman.

  • that was howard goodman befor he started getting sick thanks (mckinny don)

  • i dont think jd likes him

  • J.D. never liked organs because he had trouble finding his pitch whenever an organ was being played. The organ player is one of the best players at the time and no one told him that J.D. didn't like to have one played while he sang because of the pitch issues. It was a personal preferance J.D. had against organs his whole singing career.

  • poor ol' jd

  • so what happened? did the organ guys fart or ??? what was so funny? i didn't get it.

  • they were laughing at JD Sumner's reaction towards the organ. The organ was annoying him and he was having a hard time singing.

  • J. D. never liked organs, and didn't know that part was going to be in there. They did it just to have some fun out of J. D. LOL

  • you can thank mark lowry for that he's a big cut up

  • Love it!

  • I love that segment! It is so funny!

  • JD sumners is awsome i think this is the first time i have ever heard him he was so awsome

  • I don't blame JD for gettin' a little irritated...it was in the way of his solo a bit...he's gotta hear himself when singing so low.

There's a time to bring out your sound and then there's a time to be quiet...you have to know you're role. I'm sure the organist was doing this for humor's sake...knowing JD would react this way...at least I hope this was the case...lol

  • BEAUTIFUL!

What voices to bring a message of love & peace.

  • What a magnificent voice...Elvis and JD must be having some fun in heaven now...

  • amazing!he is the greatest bass singer ever, too bad he died...probably GOD liked too much his voice, and HE wanted to hear him singing in heaven...

  • Excellent, refreshing, glad backtracked and found this.

  • We just picked this up last nite for the first time. We are using a Catholic hymnal.

  • Fantastic!

  • This was once one the main songs of the Pentecostal movement in the last century. It never failed to bring rejoicing and most often dancing before the Lord.

  • Wonderful video - I can watch it over

and over again. Larry sings so beautiful. ....JD´s reaction and dry comments are

amazing ...... and so is Cynthias face

while she watches him ...... expectin´

    the next hold up.:-)

  • My favorite gospel song of all time.Especially when JD Sumner sings it.

  • Wheather he was singing before 1000's of fans in concert with Elvis or with a small church crowd ...JD was always TOPS .......

  • Jesus. The great forgiver of sinners and the Great loving GOD of second third and many more chances of repentance.I acknowlege Jesus as the son of God

  • lol

  • great sound! i can hear that song again and again and again...!

  • just have alittle talk with jesus

  • im catholic but congratulations for this love to jesus, and buautifull voice of jd summer, the best of world.

    maranata hermanos

  • Catholics believe in salvation thru Christ as well. Just trust Jesus to forgive you for your sins. "Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you WILL be saved".
