We humans are already beyond genes. Genetic changes occur too slowly. What realy evolves is our idea. Our memes. The same process of natural selection, of trial and error, sped up beyond imagining, is what enabled our rapid social and technological growth over the past few centuries. We have to cease imagining our next step in evolution as the pseudo-magical appearance of new genes, but rather the constant exponential growth of our ideas.
Amazing how people talk about implanting microchips into brains to enhance them as though it was a perfectly normal thing to do. Yet, those chips will eventually be able to interact with the cells in the brain and will control the individual. The chip also needs to be programmed, and, by whom? What happens if the programme restricts personal liberty in some ways?
the environmentalist movement is mostly bullshit, as for greed if i offered you a million dollars out of the blue, its right in front of you, would you take it?
well, i know 2 things i practically gave away 10,000 euros...
and a convict that won the lottery who is still in jail gave away a million or more dollars..because he was in jail anyway so..he didnt see the need to have it.... some people like to think of others before themselves.. sorry your not one of them.
so youd take the money but spend it on a selfless cause, yea but youre still greedy for the money you want to spend it doesnt matter what you want to do with it
if i was offered a million dollars, id take it, and try to help other people, but the thing is you cant give away something you dont have, whatever you want to spend the money on, youll still be greedy for the money.
i dont want more than i need i just aknowledge that my every action is motivated by a desire, maybe not for money or even something material, it could be a desire for an emotion or state like say love. it could be for a change to the world around me, such as a reduction in violent crime.
PS. youll get what you deserve?
try saying that to the dirt poor people of the third world. Most of them are good.
is your every action motivated by a desire or not?
You still enjoyed it you greedy nutter. Thats why you did it. You want pleasure and satisfaction of doing a good deed so you gave up some of your money. Your want pleasure and you are greedy for it.
Greed has nothing to do with money itself. IT has more to do with the capacity the money conveys. The ability to buy goods and services. If you use the money by giving it to a charity to help starving orphans you essentially fulfilled a greedy self fulfilling end regardless what you did. Think about it you would feel joy and accomplishment in donating the money. You got a pleasure trip. You are still greedy.
"If giving everything you have to the poor makes you happy, then you're doing it for yourself, to be happy. You're just like the bank robber."
Bullfeathers. The difference between good people and bad isn't that the good are never happy; it's WHAT makes them happy. If having things at somebody else's expense makes you happy, you're greedy. If making other people makes you happy, you're not.
You don't need a philosophy degree to figure this out.
Regardless whether it is considered good or not. From a psychological greed for the feel good feeling. If you get something in return regardless of whether it is monetary compensation, power or feeling good they all stem from greed. You cannot separate yourself from greed. It is a basic drive.
First off, you are redefining the word "greed" so that it means something a bit different than what it means when most people use that word.
But if we use your definition (let's call it Greed 2.0), then yes, you are exactly right. It doesn't much matter that you are right, because all you're really saying is that people pursue goals which are important to them, whether the goals are noble or base.
But we all knew that already. Besides, you can always be right if you define your own words.
If you remove greed from people then there would be no drive to pursue goals. Greed is an important drive for any living creature to have. If you don't desire resources and pleasure then you might as well be dead. Removing human emotions isn't the way to reach a post human civilization. Making Humans do what they do better is the best way to reach a post human civilization. THINKING and MAKING TOOLS.
I'm glad this has finally come back around to the subject of posthumans.
Look, if you want to assign the label "greed" to every human desire, be it rape and theft or giving to charity and throwing yourself on the grenade to save your fellow soldiers, I certainly can't stop you from using the word "greed" in that way.
Just understand that people won't take you seriously.
Now as for a posthuman future: a posthuman future will likely also be a post-scarcity future, and everybody will be rich.
Self Sacrifice. Now that isn't a natural motivation. Most creatures have self preservation as there main motivation. Reproduction is actually about preserving genes and is a form of self preservation. Now if you consider protecting comrades protect wider range of genes then just your own it may be that Self Sacrifice would help in the gene survival of the group. Interesting line of query with that one.
I seem to recall (it was the early Eighties) a scientist saying that, from a purely genetic standpoint, it makes sense to sacrifice your own life to save two siblings or five cousins. But with human beings you have to consider more than genetics; you have to consider thoughts and feelings.
Now, the soldier throwing himself on that grenade probably doesn't have two siblings or five cousins in that platoon with him, but he may well think of his his fellow soldiers the same way he would brothers.
Also, there is memetic propagation to think about. The suicide bomber isn't doing squat to preserve his own life, or his own genes. But he is promoting his cause, or at least thinks he is.
Suicide bombers get compensation by terrorist organizations in the form of Huge Monetary pay outs to their families(helping the family/gene pool). Though there is no guarantee that the terrorist organizations will pay up.

Greed isnt as divine as idiots try to make it seem because selfishness destroys social abilities just as greed will deplete all life from the planet.

lol interesting how your point revolves around labeling me as greedy.. you can tell by how many times you say... You are greedy.. or you greedy..
wanting pleasure does not make me greedy...
greed is the wanting to have more than you deserve..or need.

ps: i gave up all my money not some of it..
the thing is it came back to me ..... psychically and through kindness
i rather have that than being greed any day.

This is an old argument and it's pointless.
