This ad is disturbing and disgusting.. and further evidence of Yoga being turned over to the hands of clever profiteers like Jon Friend and the Anusara Scene (Cult). As a long time Yoga Instructor I am grossed out.
over reacted. calm down. just a mat somewhat wider. are you one of those complaining endlessly when seated next to a big guy on an underground?! learn to share. start from a few public inches. i' wouldn't mind even a 30% bigger mat next to me as long as it's owned by a yogi with a good will.
this is so awful. I've also always liked Manduka style but this video just wants me to unsubscribe and never buy anything from Manduka anymore. is this really such a bad marketing step or a bad joke?
Where's the love, people? It's just a yoga mat - it's either gonna be awesome for your practice or it's not. I just wanted to see John play more air guitar.
I have a bigger, wider mat made by another company. Cecily7, I love it and take it to every class. I'm tall and broad shouldered and love being able to align with anatomical integrity without my hands and toes being off my mat. I will show up with it for every class I take, no apologies.
I have a Manduka Mat and it's been the foundation for my Yoga practice for over 9 years. Looking forward to eventually acquiring another one and gifting the old one that has been infused with love. May I say, If you are worried about what other people think about your mat, or your reputation in yoga class, then you are not practicing "real" yoga. Namaste!
@atm4382 So if I am being considerate enough to think about not taking up more space than everyone else, I am not practicing "rea yoga"? Sorry, this makes zero sense. I practiced Kundalini for years with no mat at all, so Namaste back atcha!
As an Anusara-Inspired teacher teaching at many studios and fitness centers, I can say a quality mat makes all the difference. Some mats are just unsafe, slippery, thin. Students get too tense just trying to stay on the mat. I've tossed it aside and used the hard wood floor. If you are committed to a lifelong practice of yoga, you cannot go wrong with a one-time purchase of a high quality mat. One that is 30-inches wide is my wide shoulder's best friend. Yes, I'll show up with it!
People. It's just a yoga mat. I like Manduka and I recently bought myself a "Beginner's Luck Packgage," but I've been looking at photos from Occupy Wall Street all day and now seeing this promo (that looks like an Apple ad from 2004) just makes me feel terrible. John Friend is not Steve Jobs, and really, are you going to be the one who shows up for a packed class with a gigantic mat, bigger than everyone else's? Who wants that reputation? Sorry, this just left me with a bad taste in my mouth.
@cecily7 You're right. We're just a company that makes yoga mats. But we try to do it with the most heart, soul, eco-responsibility and attention to the yoga community as possible. We want to offer the tools to help people find their most honest, joyful and ready-to-serve selves. And for some, a little more space might open up a whole lotta doors in their practice.
@cecily7 Are you a racist? Do all white guys with black tshirts look the same to you?
This guy doesn't look remotely like Steve Jobs. SJ'slook is a black mock turtleneck, blue jeans, and New Balance 993's. This dude actually has hair on his head, no glasses, and isn't suited up.
Looking at photos from OWC doesn't make you better. Get off your huge ass and actually protest.
@ilusiphur692342 I am not a racist, and you are clearly trolling, whereas I was fulling expressing my honest opinion about the sheer strangeness of this video. I do not know who John Friend is, but this marketing style is tired and the video does not match with my (GOOD) impression of Manduka as a company. Manduka's site is beautiful and this video is just not. And in Austin, where I practice, a big mat is not going to win you any friends. It's simply poor etiquette.

@MandukaTV
Clearly this dude is imitating Phil Shiller, not SJ. I mean, look at his *hair*.

@cecily7 I'LL SHOW YOU POOR ETIQUETTE!
I'm going to take all 5 of my Manduaka Mats and roll them over your mats. And I'm going to swipe your water bottle.

@ilusiphur692342 I suppose you will also fart through the series and snore during Savasana to top it off.
