FUN FACT: For those who don't know, Adam "Adrock" Horovitz from the Beastie Boys was the one who actually made the beat for LL Cool J's " I Need A Beat" which was LL Cool J's first single.
99% of emcees back in the days started their rhymes off by saying Yes Yes Y'all. Does that mean they were all biters? Of course not. LL and T La Rock were and still dynamic for what they have done and still do so knock it off with the mindless comparisons. LL owes a lot of his success to his mentor SilverFox of the Fantasy Three. 100's
@many people on this post. If mimicking a style were considered biting (not just stealing lyrics or a beat) then everyone with the exception of the creators would be biters. Include anyone using the word bitch in rap (Too Short made it popular). Anyone that used scratching. Anyone that sampled beats. Anyone that used more than one person in a group (Sugarhill Gang maybe the first). Anyone that growled "rah" (Kurtis Blow one of the first). I can go on. It's evolution. Tieuel Legacy! Motion
Cool J is an original sounding emcee, even if there were elements of T LA Rock in his early sound...the lyrics were his own, the flow was his own, he expanded past that early sound about 20x over..and kept himself and his career relevant for 3 decades, T LA Rock hasn't come close to doing anything like that and I respect that man, but Cool J is on a totally different level, plain and simple, I mean Michael Jackson took some style ideas from Jackie Wilson, but Mike took those ideas to the HEIGHTS
@ peemic u definitely right ,i was wit LL the summer before he dropped this joint and he used to recite the words to "it yours" to me word for word he was awestruck by that jam,He did borrow the style but i definitely think he added more swagger to it.this style gave birth to the rakims and kool g raps wit the crazy vocabulary
@ peemic u definitely right ,i was wit LL the summer before he dropped this joint and he used to recite the words to "it yours" to me word for word he was awestruck by that jam,He did borrow the style but i definitely think he added more swagger to it.
@mrpower328 I see your point but it still goes against one of the core rules of hip hop which is NO biting and people should know who originated the style.
@Peemic Oh yeah T La Rock and his brother Special K of the Treacherous Three deserves all the credit, no doubt about that. They Originated that style. LL is a student of that style.
@Peemic LL still carved his own niche in the game man, you make it sound like Cool J bit everything from T La Rock and those that know understand that is not true....Cool J is an originator man..he is a legend, he took hip-hop to new heights....those that know hip-hop history know this too....
@Peemic You can't really blame LL for sounding like T La Rock, but you can blame Rick Rubin for this. Rick wanted the same type style record as It's Yours. It's Yours and I Need a Beat is actually the same type record.
But It's Yours was a RICK RUBIN record.... look at the original imprint and you will see that It's Yours is on Partytime records but it has the DefJam logo... Def Jam WAS Rick Rubin
I dont know, and I will tell you what I am talking about....
The educated style was Kool Moe D all the way.... So if you REALLY want to be sticklers about it, Special K, who wrote "It's Yours" stole it from Moe D But LL fused that style, using big words with Run DMC's yelling style to create his own style.
I dont think LL bit, because when I think of biting I think of someone who just uses someone else's gimmick without making it their own.. like what EPMD did to Rakim.
@mrm921 LL mailed his demo to Rick Rubin and Rubin thought it wasn't amazing but there was something funny about it so he called him n the eventually made I this
i was just reading a book about Rick Rubin in the studio. this was the first official "Def Jam" single. if you look at the credits you'll see A. Horowitz (Ad Rock from the beastie boys, before the beastie boys had even released 'license to ill') and R Rubin, who was the greatest rap producer of the 80's. it also, of course, says 'produced by rick rubin' right on it. Ad Rock found LL out of a pile of demo tapes stacking up in Rubins apartment. so, technically, Ad Rock discovered LL. hahah.
Damn cats don't even know LL threw it down like this...! !6 yrs old when he recorded this. tell me a rapper that ever sounded better at this young age???
@TheTeenLyricist Yeah because of their different styles. LL's style iz really freestyling hardcore. 14 Shotz to the dome was his hardest. Nas & the 90s Rakim they really talked about how the world iz. With politics and life being fucked up as it iz. I feel ya. But I have no favorite artists. And U rite others r more lyrical than otherz. oN the real I just luv the rap game. If it wasn't 4 tha old school I wouldn't be az strong hearted az I am today.
I bought this Def Jam 12" from Groove Records in Greek Street many years ago, I bought the Radio album there too.The version on the album wasn't as good as this one.I used to go to Groove Records every weekend to spend my pocket money on 12" imports and listened to Mike Allen on Capital Radio every week, those were the days.

However the Great Rick Rubin produced both singles T-La rock and LL cool J.

The so-call'd "official first single on Def Jam" (I still beg to differ if it was or not 'cuz I kno' T-La Rock & DJ Jazzy Jay's "It's Yours" was the OFFICIAL DEF JAM dat summer fo' sho'!!! But, I love this song...had this single!!!
That's correct. My man T-La-Rock & DJ Jazzy Jay "Its Yours" was the first Official Def Jam record which came out in the July of 1984 and LL Cool J "I Need a Beat" came out some time in October of 1984. I know all this stuff because I still have the 12" vinyl singles. Matter fact I have loads of tapes from Mr Magic Radio show. But they first played these 2 songs on 98.7 Kiss Fm DJ Red Alert Radio show.
@mrpower328 true. i have argued with people since the mid 80's over the first single on defjam label. it was "its yours". and for me, thats the song that made me a b-boy all those years ago. thats how i will always know what song came first.
@sweepee4pres i read the rick rubin autobiography AND the tla rock bio and they both said the same thing. i lived it, you going by some shit you heard about.
bottom line. def jam was the label that its yours was dropped on. and that was before i need a beat. now eat a dikk!!

The so-call'd "official first single on Def Jam" (I still beg to differ if it was or not 'cuz I kno' T-La Rock & DJ Jazzy Jay's "It's Yours" was the OFFICIAL DEF JAM dat summer fo' sho'!!! But, I love this song...had this single!!!
meechamaka411 2 years ago 4

2 (Bigddagenius) Just because one doesn't go 2 skool dont mean they not educated. Alot of people educate themselves! especially if u live in a community where the skools are ran down. Each one, Teach one! In my opinion I think its betta 2 educate yoself cuz then u kno whateva u feed yoself is true! Everything a teacher teach aint tru, and everything n a book aint tru! Teach yoself and youll find out da difference btween da 2... But i c where u cumin from doe... He's just a smart man...

You can't. Its not on any CD's. I converted this from a Vinyl record to digital format with Creative Software.
