The female can create an ootheca (egg sack) without the use of male sperm.

The egg sack won't be fertile. Usually. But female Praying Mantis' can create a fertile egg sack on her own. It's called Parthogenesis. All the babies however will be exact clones of the mother. The offspring will ALL be female and look exactly like the mother did.

That's weird...if you serch "mantis" in Snopes, it tells you that this normally doesn't happen in the wild; it's only seen occasionally in captivity.
