  • Through early morning fog I see visions of the things to be the pains that are withheld for me I realize and I can see. That suicide is painless It brings on many changes and I can take or leave it if I please. I try to find a way to make all our little joys relate without that ever-present hate but now I know that it's too late, and...
  • @godbluffvdgg The game of life is hard to play I'm gonna lose it anyway The losing card I'll someday lay so this is all I have to say The only way to win is cheat And lay it down before I'm beat and to another give my seat for that's the only painless feat. The sword of time will pierce our skins It doesn't hurt when it begins But as it works its way on in The pain grows stronger...watch it grin, but A brave man once requested me to answer questions that are key 'is it to be or not to b
  • um youtube isnt dead?

  • @cassidy3998 yet.

  • Thanks! : )

  • Great movie, greats actors, great quotes :)

M*A*S*H is the best war-comedy movie and deserve its palm.

  • let us not forget this is an awsome tune regardless of.. the trash

  • Great movie

  • what a waste of an education

  • You notice that the nurses sitting at the table are arranged in the same positions as the apostles in the Last Supper painted by Leonardo Da Vinci

  • i didnt see the movie, was he planning to kill himself or somthing? is that why they were all doing that? or was he dieing?

  • @Jackalope20051 he's planing to kill himself (coz suizide is painless). But he didn't die, he just slept and wanted to survive after he woke up

  • @Jackalope20051 Painless, the guy who is in the coffin, thinks he is gay and thus wants to die. Hawkeye and the bunch give him a sleeping pill. After he is asleep, they bring his sleeping body to the officer's tent and get a nurse (Hawkeye is the one who does it) to sleep with him. He no longer thinks he is gay and continues on like nothing happened.

  • May Col Sherman potter live in our and the 4077th hearts.

  • Doesn't he survive his suicide attempt?

  • @micgerm Yes he does, because he is only given a sleeping pill. Hawkeye convinces one of the nurses to sleep with him, because Painless wants to comit suicide for the unlogical reason of him thinking that he was homosexual.

  • :35

  • RIP Colonel Potter

  • You're throwing your whole education away....something you probably got during the Great Depression. So it was probably a hell of a lot more affordable than getting an education in 2011.

  • lmao! freakin hilarious!

  • wait, which episode is this??? I've seen almost every episode of all 11 seasons and don't remember this scene.

  • @ROCKonXLR This is the movie.

  • @ROCKonXLR this is from the movie. not the series. this is what started it all.

  • @csh0rty91 WRONG! Started with a great book.

  • I like the way the the actors are posed like da Vinci's Last Supper painting.

  • Its deaths way of toying with us people get killed the firs day they go to war and to rub it in soldiers get so happy because they are leaving on a freedom bird but they get shot down on the way its just the way death toys with us its so sad

  • lmao "youtube is not dead"?? WTF xD

  • was altman inspired by buñuel's last supper scene in "viridiana"?

  • did you notice the Last Supper?

  • @beerman1957 That made the scene..Altman, a true genius..

  • great song great movie

  • dose anyone know the young mans name that is singing the song?

  • Ken Prymus

  • @shannman58 Ken Prymus (playing Private Seidman)

  • @shannman58

his name is Billy Preston........the guy who sang "Nothin from Nothin" and the ONLY artist given credits on a Beatle album for the piano on "Get Back"

  • god this brings back sooo much memories

  • Such a catchy tune for a such a depressing song. Love it.

  • I DARE anyone (who is making pointless mainstream movies today) to make a film like this...Please...

  • @smedleylt This movie was 90% improv since it was made during a writer strike you know...

  • @danschaoticmind

I didn't know that, thanks mate. That only goes to show just how friggin amazing the actors were! MASH was my favourite show in the '70s and '80s (we were a bit late in the UK :P)

  • @AlchemicalDavid

Sorry - sarcasm doesn't work on the net LOL. The last bit was true - every thing after the first bit :P

  • @AlchemicalDavid The series was purely scripted. However, with the movie it was mostly a "I want to go in this general direction, make it happen" and the crew improved from that.

  • @danschaoticmind

Thanks - that's not sarcasm btw. I've loved that film (and the series) since I was a babe. The flick was so under-rated IMO.

The only bit the series did to make me cry was when Radar was going home and his chopper got downed (no double-entedres ladies)

  • @AlchemicalDavid Radar made it home perfectly fine. It was Lt. Col. Henry Blake's plane that was shot down over the Sea of Japan.

  • @joemjackson

I thought Radar's got hit in the series? My bad LOL

  • @AlchemicalDavid Actualy he did get wounded but yes he did make it home they sent him home cause his uncle died and his mom was all alone

  • This is the movie thats why you dont see alan alda

It started with a book movie then the tv show

  • love this movie and i loved that yet that you threw in there

  • I didnt know this happened on MASH. I was a kid liking the tune LOL. Had no idea this was the lyrics of the song.

  • "You're throwing your whole education away." LOL This is one of my all time favorite movies. I also love how the singer starts picking up the tempo as soon as Painless lies down in the coffin.

  • who had died here??

  • @warisinteresting213 Painless, the dentist of the outfit. He thought he was gay and thus wanted to end his life. So they gave him a sleeping pill and got a nurse to sleep with him.

  • My first husband commited suicide in 2004. In a strange way, the theme song from M*A*S*H* has brought some comfort.

  • @ Sytrue: the kid with glasses is played by Bud Cort. He also starred in Altman's "Brewster McCloud" as well as playing Harold in "Harold & Maude."

  • Did anyone notice that this looks a little like the painting of the last supper?

  • @Typist1001 There are even 12 people there.

  • @Typist1001 It was designed by Altman (director) to mimic it

  • @Typist1001 It's supposed to.

  • Written by director Robert Altmans 14 year old son, amazing.

  • I never realized this scene begins like a painting of Leonardo Da Vinci, you know the one with Jesus and the apostles sitting at a table - it's very similar

  • @ambreal Yes, it's a reference to da Vinci's "The Last Supper".

  • why did he take that pill?

  • @DanteDarksanity

he thought it would kill him

  • I definitely like the TV show better than the movie, but this is one of my favorite scenes - this and the scene where they find out whether Margaret is a natural blonde.

  • Radar is my favorite character. What does he say here? I couldn't really understand it.

  • @cbrme97 I haven't watched the movie (just the TV show) but I think Radar (if the one I'm thinking is Radar) says "Thank you, for throwing your whole education away." Not sure if that's exactly it, sounded like it though.

  • @sytrue No, Radar was in front of him. I don't recall that character's name, but he was a medic I think. There is a scene where Frank (Robert Duval) rips him apart verbally for an apparent medical mistake that was Frank's own doing. Typical Frank!!

  • It's disheartening that the media business was edgier 40 years ago....

  • @SYN7HOR Yeah, even kid shows/comics like Astro Boy and TMNT were edgy back then!

  • This is a great scene......Unforgettable......The only thing disturbing is that the singer had a great big smile while singing......He shouldve been a bit more somber........

    .

  • @722mhm They all know that it's not for real except for Jawbreaker. The singer waits until he's in the coffin and less likely to see him before cracking that big grin and upping the tempo. Brilliant direction by Altman.

  • I think duke would had been good in the series

  • My Dad was assigned to the 8068th QuarterMaster Corps and Stationed on Okinawa during the Korean War. He was there from Late 1952 / Early 1953 until he was Mustered Out in October 1954. He said they handled Supplies and Gasoline for the Illustrious and Amazing Troops of the United States Army. I think he said they went up to the Korean Peninsula to bring Fuel there for our Military to use. Anyone know of the 8068 TH ? A Family Friend who is still alive Fired Artillery at the Front against NK

  • this was by 20th Century Fox, not Warner Bros.

  • @eddiemurphyfan100 ; but is my message to MGM... (for another videos)

  • @donyfernando, not exactly. The original song was released by Paramount and the movie was by Fox, and they had nothing to do with MGM. So no

  • What does Radar say at 2:20?

  • Who is that singing in the scene? That's the best version I've ever heard of the song

  • @willard39 I think the actor's name is Ken Prymus.

  • this is the movie

  • oh painless pole.

  • 30 sec in Scene from Da Vinci's Last Supper, genius. I knew there was a rreason I loved this show as a lad.

  • Comment removed

  • 4 people work for WMG.

  • What was the reason he killed himself?

  • @scorzi He wanted to kill himself because he couldn't perform sexually one night and thought he had turned gay.

  • Cracked, anyone?

  • Love it.This version is far better than the theme version.

  • 0:22 looks like the last super pose

  • @kevinchajka2010 It's supposed to.

  • @vgmgc dammit, I was about to tell him that.

  • I actually got goosebumps listening to this.

  • 4 stupid pro lifers

  • I've always loved the theme song---mainly because of the series, which I loved too, but it was interesting to find out that the actual lyrics were written by director Robert Altman's son, who was barely 15 when he wrote it! After finally renting the film out and seeing it again after many years (I would catch it on T.V. every now and then, but rarely at the beginning. It's still crazy as hell after 4 decades as it attempted to wring what little sanity it could out of the insanity of war itself!

  • If you have ever laughed at a M*A*S*H moment, you should really read the novel, watch the film, and watch all the series (without laughtrack, if possible). It is amazing and different in all formats. When the M*A*S*H series premiered it lowered theatre and drive-in ticket sales significantly. That should say something about how it was expected.

  • Movie was better than the tv show.

  • @ARURTOREYES you can't compare the two. The movie was good until they did the football part. Teh series had up and down but it was a smart program. Compared to the progams today it was a master mind.

  • great laughter with death soooo great

  • This was from the movie.

  • @scorpietta You were right, it wasn't Burns who made the comment. I think it was the younger guy who mumbles it.

  • Suicide is pain less, aand early morining fog is what, you will see.And then I relize I wake up to see, pain is Suicide... peace&respect Daniel Aarron Morales

  • Three people work with Col. Flagg.

  • i cant remember does the guy die in the movie

  • @chriswalburn That's Painless the Dentist, and no he doesn't die. He gets didddled in his sleep because it wasn't a real "Death" pill. Hawkeye helped him in the end.

  • I wish the third verse ("The only way to win is cheat...") were present in other versions of the song. It's awesome.

  • that was odd

  • Youtube may not be dead. But it is definitely painless. For those who barely caught the last supper reference I really want to emphasize how much symbolism is packed into this one scene. Everything from the obvious upbeat take on the theme singing of Suicide is Painless . The complete and utter lack of understanding or care from Mj. Frank Burns and the flippant comment of not understanding the benefit of," Throwing his whole education away" as if that is something more important than death

  • @Stopikingonme I love this movie and this is definitely my favorite scene because it is so symbolic on many levels (the whole film is really, when one thinks about it), but I don't recall the comment about throwing education away. Does Burns make that in reference to Jawbreaker's decision? Burns really was a heel, but I love Robert Duvall! Great casting here.

  • What Episode was this inz???

Who was he and why did he commit suicide??

  • @1falo1 It's from the movie version of MASH. Check it out if you can, it's really good.

  • @Mario1999X

    was the original

  • @donyfernando And the best

  • @1falo1 :

    It's from the original movie

  • @1falo1: Ladies and gentlemen, I introduce you to 1-fail-o1

  • @ogredm Excuse my ignorance. At least I don't go around acting tough on the internet. You should rethink your life. I love you.

  • @1falo1 it wasn't a episode it was mash the movie

  • Was this a real scene? I mean, a doctor comitts suicide and they all agree to assist him?

  • @KombiPode i think they actually trick him with sleeping pills. i don't remember very well.

  • @6020e3 youre right. I went and got the movie from ThePirateBay so that I could find out. hahahahah

They dont only trick him, they wake him up with the hottest girl on campus sucking his dick!

  • @KombiPode lol. awesome. i was right :D i need to see MASH again. i haven't seen it for quite a long time.

  • they gave him a sleeping pill and let that hot doctor lady come in his room and rock his world that was a good movie my favorite scene was the "hotlips" scene

  • i rember as a teen i almost kill myself when i die someday i hope someone plays this at my funeral

  • The Singer, Kenny Prymus, sounds a lot like Johnny Mathis.....Suicide is Painless is sung beautifully here. Thanks for sharing.

  • @coolspindrift: I agree !

  • @coolspindrift: I agree ! Thanks you

  • Great movie. Your a fag for posting those stupid fucking words

  • @spanky6988420

INAPPROPIATE oe ever you spell it but still

  • Had to watch this in uni a couple of weeks ago; brill film. :) now one of my fav comedies.

  • is this a real episode or is this like a play or something?

  • @Jeffhardyman24 Neither. It's a movie. I can't remember exactly when it came out but it was certainly before the TV show. Worth watching though. In fact I'd say in some ways better than the TV version.

  • @Jeffhardyman24

this is not from the television series, it is from the original movie before the series

  • @Jeffhardyman24

Not an episode. This is a scene from the 1970 movie "MASH."

Yes it was a movie before it was a TV series!!!

  • In the first part where their all sitting at the table tell me if that is a tribute to The Last Supper. Of of memory it looks eerily similar.

  • Yes, The Last Supper !

  • @joekoe97 duh.

  • Who is the guy who is commiting suicide?

  • @pallavkumar95 A dentist nicknamed 'Painless'.

  • The shows wasnt bad. but I liked cheers better.

  • i havnt seen this yet, so does he die or what ? XD

  • @orpingtondood watch the movie. its a very good movie. it was banned on military bases for quite some time.

  • I love this song.

  • The movie was a comment on war in general, while the tv show was a barely veiled allegory for Viet Nam. Or am I missing it?

  • @mikemilne I think that's mostly backwards. Vietnam was over for the Americans by the third or so season of the series, whereas Altman deliberately left out all direct references to Korea in the film so people would mistake it for Vietnam.

  • @mikemilne No, you hit it squarely on the head.

  • One of the brilliant things to come out of television. Even to this day it stands up well.

  • i always found this Suicide scene rather strange

    but yet emotional

  • This is the real MASH, the tv show was garbage.

  • @stigler30 Wrong.. both are M*A*S*H. The Movie was more darker in tone and harsher, the TV-Show took a little more Comedy in it, but still, subtle were was the tragedy of war and in some episodes, there is almost no laugh, because it's so sad.

Both things are great for them self and should be judged each for what it was.

  • @Elyanley

I felt like the movie was more lighthearted, especially with the football game and such. Overall there is more humor in the show, but it was running for 11 years so there's more of everything in it. The man in this movie didn't end up dying, but in the show henry never made it home. And you have to watch bj suffer from being away from his wife and erin. And you slowly watch hawkeye go crazy from the war. Yeah they add humor, but i've seen all of both and the show is definitely darker

  • @stigler30 You got it backwards pal!

  • @NOSFERATU904 I believe you do.

  • I love MASH but Im yet to see the film. Is it true he commits suicide due to getting homosexual tendancies?? Or have I read internet BS. Please enlighten me. thanks x x

  • @bloodravenuk Nah, he doesn't commit Suicide. It was an Placebo-Pill or Viagra (not so sure) and he get's into a tent with a nice nurse and well.. one think to another ^.~

  • @bloodravenuk he wanted to commit suicide because he was empitant! No hard on for painless!

  • @bloodravenuk He doesn't. He is out of sorts in the movie and thinks he's less of a man because he's impotent. Because he's impotent he thinks he's gay. Thus he thinks that life isn't worth living in his mind. Sohe asks Hawkeye to help him commit suicide and instead he fools him into taking a sleeping pill and he wakes up with a hot nurse (not hot lips) but he gets his confidence back : )

  • @joekoe97 Ah I was misinformed. My bad

  • "Throwing your whole education away."

  • @OttoIsMyBuddha best line in the whole movie

  • Wonderful. Awesome. The photography and the song, the table, the coffin, powerful manifestation of the true will. Simply awesome.

  • Wonderful. Awesome. The photography and the song, the table, the coffin, powerful manifestation of the true will. Simply awesome.

  • I love this version - his voice is great!

  • I just love the way they parody DiVinci's the last supper from 0:15 on...teehhee

  • @Rennimagus thats very clever last supper, hows that working out for you? being clever

  • 5 stars for this rendition

  • ***SPOILER ALERT***

Was this the same movie where one of the officers told a woman to keep her baby quiet, and in order to save the lives of the people on the bus, she ended up smothering it, and the memory traumatized him?

  • @Joyness333 No. This the original motion picture. The one you're thinking of is "Goodbye, farewell, and amen", which was the very last show of the TV series. The officer was Hawkeye, played by Alan Alda. He was in the mental ward and kept thinking it was a chicken, only to remember later that it was a baby on the bus.

  • @Joyness333 youre thinking of the last episode of the tv series.
