  • Incredible!

the player was asked to perform on the wrong moment in ALL aspects!!

His virtuoisity is beyond question, thats all

  • He's a very good technician. With the incorporation of a bit of passion and fire, especially in a piece like the Widor toccata, he could be an amazing musician....

That audience was just plain rude -- don't they teach manners in Texas???

  • At least some of the congregation appreciated it by clapping at the end. I'm afraid the organist's lot is often always recognized though...

Nice performance here - maybe a bit fast, but comes off in the building and acoustic.

  • BRAVO KIYO!

  • he makes it look so easy !!! great performance ;)

  • This totally rocks! He's into it too- watch his head as he tunes out the crowd and blasts himself and this magnificent organ! Unbelievable!!

  • a great performance, but as usual, the congregation's busy "yackin" their heads off to even notice...with most churches, this is considered "background" entertainment so "I can continue to talk, which is what I do all the time, but I must keep talking!

the postlude is part of worship, NOT TRAVELIN' MUSIC TO THE NEAREST BUFFET LINE!

  • this is amazing!! much faster than i have ever heard play before, and our last organist was amazing at this piece!! so sad that he moved away!! i praise anyone who even tries to gives this beautiful piece a go!! good on you!!

  • I really liked the enthusiasm! Great performance! I assume this was the postlude and that's why people were talking.

  • Makes one wonder why the audience came?

  • The audience was rude and disrespectful. I wouldn't have used this on U-Tube. The organist is good but in my opinion played the piece way too fast. Try listening to Widor playing it himself - he is more prescise and slow.

  • fucking philistines those people in the audience

  • Performance absolutely great!

The audience? Absolutely rude and unmannerly. What a disgrace!

Oh well, it was in Texas after all.

  • Wow! It's very interesting to see and interpretation of this piece where everything isn't just played tutti. A very expressive rendition of a very difficult piece to play! Bravo!

  • Your GAY!!!!

  • i haven't got the dexterity in one finger that kiyo has in ten ~

  • These people should shut the fuck up and listen or get the fuck out, this is one of the best versions i have heard on youtube

  • Great performance, and a wonderful organ. Only wish I was there in the sanctuary to hear it in person.

  • What is doing the audience while the organist give a perfect play of a not easy piece? Giggling, chating and more unrespectfull things. What a shame.

  • lifeforart ~ and don't forget sneakin' a few nips behind the lilies ~

  • @LifeforArt - They are just the talkative southern culture into the High Energy on Easter Sunday - They clapped - Talking is how they could express the magnificent shakti of this piece.. I know - been to many an easter sunday service At Covenant Church in Charlotte, NC - with Dr. Richard Peek and his Widor's Toccata.

  • @LifeforArt yes, methodists tend to chatter like baptists, & just can't keep their mouths shut, during what they perceive as, "traveling music..."

    yes, it's shameful & disrespectful!

  • @LifeforArt I agree! I'm a member of this church, and I hardly ever attend (b/c I have no means of transport), but I agree. Kiyo's a miracle, as is the Garland organ, and both should be respected and appreciated more than they are!

  • Indeed, and my personal tie to the postlude is it is all over and be happy is it over, but with respect to the organist.

I more than likely will sit and listen to the postlude but I am one of very few who do in my congregation

  • Is that a 32 and 16 in the pedal in the final section?

  • Whenever the organist plays this piece at my church, a lot of people stay and clap when it is finished! It is usually the postlude.

  • It is a tradition thoughout Germany, that the organ voluntary has to be listened to quietly. And all german congregations obey, they do not utter a single word or get up during a voluntary, they just remain seated for its duration. I wish it was the same in the USA and UK

  • What a wonderful interpretation!

  • Nobody pays attention to the postlude, and I just hate that. Im 14 and an organist (in training) and Iove the postlude.

  • SO RUDE! AND I AGREE WITH U MAN! I STARTED PLAYING THE ORGAN WHEN I WAS 10 and up to now people have no respect! Postule is awesome!

  • I experienced that at my last posting. During one Sunday's postlude, I just stopped dead and walked off. Didn't happen anymore after that,

  • That's awesome!!!!

  • Beautiful!!!

  • He Plays as well as the great Virgil Fox!!

  • Um .... wait a second.

  • I have found that people usually chat durning the postlude, at least all churches I have been organist.. so I expected it and it didn't bother me.

  • Lol same, at the end of the day, WE can go LOUDER than them, so lol Organ always wins!!

  • Brilliant piece and a brilliant Organist. A pity about the video's weak sound.

  • People are so rude talking while an artist performs. I had this happen to me once and it is very insulting. Anyhow, nice work man.

    masterfully played.

  • Bravo!

  • This is really excellently played! Also, this is about the speed I prefer to hear it...otherwise, to my ear, it seems to drag just a litte...but that's just me. :) I don't believe it detracts from the sheer beauty, power and majesty of the piece either way. And this organ...what a fantastic sound! I'd love to get to play this every Sunday :)

VERY well done, Dr. Watanabe! More, please

    :-)

  • if it was played as writtn in the original manuscript in with manual staccato playing it would not need to be as fast or frenetic.

  • Oh and by the way Reese, I listened to your recordings and you're in no position age-wise or skill-wise to be critical of anyone else.

And one more thing: "Manuel" is a man's name, "manuAl" describes a keyboard on an organ.

Don't FUSS with a Lutheran organist, kid.

  • Very well said!

Oh, and what church are u organist at?

  • Yes and when somebody is rude lets be rude back! Very mature! I see you've gone to lengths with your reply (e.g. the whole Manual thing). Now you were just picking at Rees. He didn't have quite the hostility in his comment. He said 'Great Performance'. Gosh.

  • Great job, but I would have drowned out all of the people talking. I wouldn't necessarily say the people are rude, because people commonly talk over postludes. I know the ending is loud, but I would have played the rest really loudly too!

  • What a horror! Fantastic concert, but rude people ruined it! Too bad!

  • I believe this was done as the postlude of the service and not actually during a concert.

  • Yes, it was on Easter Sunday this year.

  • Even if it is "just the postlude", people shouldn't be so rude. Don't they realize what they are missing?!?

  • Very well done!

  • I love this music! It´s amazing! I have this music in my mp4 player and I listen to it time after time and I never get tired of it. I´m worried because i think i´m getting addicted to this music! Thank you and congratulations for your interpretation! Wonderfull!

  • Beautiful playing, but what a shame the people didn't seem to want to listen..

  • I agree! People seem to be out to lunch everywhere.

  • Absolutely fantasic playing Kiyo. Were you using all the stops at the end of the piece, i looked at the specs and it shows many bombardes, trumpets and a 64' pedal reed

    Regards

    Organist12345

  • I actually pulled only around 3/4 of the entire stops even at the end. I did not use the 64' pedal reed, which plays only down to A below the tenor C. The 64' works great if the music is in A, B-flat, or B.

  • Kiyo, this is my favorite of all the fantastic postludes that you play. It really is a treat sitting in the choir loft feeling those big pipes roar as well as hearing your masterful playing. Youtube just can't do your playing justice. Thanks for posting. Kyle

  • Well done wonderfully played!! - not an easy piece of music to play prosaically unaided with music!!

  • Hello Reese. I don't think a young organist such as yourself is in a position to tell Dr. Kiyo Watanabe how to play the Widor Toccata. But a lot of people do play it the way you mention.

  • It is VERY RUDE to criticize an organist's playing.

Whenever I get any kind of criticism that I didn't ask for, I always ask the person "Was it you or me that was appointed by the church council??"

And my copy of the Toccatta at the end calls for FULL ORGAN with all manuals coupled to the great, so any other manual played would be drowned out (and pointless).

  • Simply perfect. Kiyo Watanabe is truly an outstanding musician.

  • Awsome Job! And you played it from memory! Next time try slowing it down a little.
