I vividly remember watching this program back in 1982. While the overall effect of "The Wave" was frightening and ultimately had to be halted, it is curious to note the positive effect it inflicted on certain people i.e. the nerdy, isolated kid in the class. It benefited him to the max..he finally felt like he "was part of something" and ergo "highly important"-he was really into it and performed well! In other words, people of his calibre would find dictatorship endearing. Just a thought...
@eltzar72 NO IT DIDN'T!! What are you, Pointdexter? You have got to be blind as a goddamn bat not to realize the effects this experiment inflicted on that kid. In a Psycology elective course I took back in college, it was proven that isolated cases such as him would quickly incorporate themselves into such a society like a fish in water. "Far less understanding" MY ASS!!!
@ursa41 ok, I realise now I am dealing with someone who is a little hampered in their cognitive processes.
Proven? Really?
SO IN EVERY SITUATION THAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE PERSON IN THAT POSITION?
No.
It won't.
The way you wrote it left no room for any other option, and that is not reality. There is a possibility, nothing more, that this may happen. Even if it was 99.9%, and it's not, it would still be a possibility.
Go back and do that course again in college, because you clearly need to.
@ursa41 also, you use the term "calibre" when describing the guy.
Calibre?
Up yourself much?
How do you, from this video, claim to have anywhere near enough information to guage his "calibre of person".
You effete snob, you self-righteous putrescent piece of piffling pelican poop.
Pull your head out of your own ass long enough to accept that every time you think you know it all, that is the best indication of all that you have a hell of a lot more to learn.
@ursa41 so yeah, what was DEMONSTRATED (not proven) was that there is a likelihood for isolated cases such as his (likelihood, not a certainty) would incorporate themselves into such a society like a fish to water.
Although this after school special is a somewhat fictionalized account of an actual event, it should still in my opinion be digitally restored, and released on DVD for the current and future generations to watch. It should be shown to everyone, regardless of their ethic background to show how easy it is for people to be corrupted by groupthink and charismatic leaders into committing horrible attrocities.
@Nowhereman10 well they sort of did. heard of a german movie called DIE WELLE its apperantly based on the wave.I havn't seen it so can't give you any more info. But i gotta say i find it ironic that they made a german version, condisering its the germans that are the start of subjeckt in this movie
@leiefilm Maybe it's not so much ironic as it is logical. Anyway I highly recommend it. The lead does a great job and it's much more watchable than this very dated movie. It is however kind of simple and unrealistic but it does send the message.
@leiefilm I have seen Die Welle. It is simply an even more fictionalized version of what happened with the Third Wave experiment than The Wave is. I prefer The Wave since it follows the events that have been alleged to have happened at Cubberley High School in Palo Alto in 1967 much more closely. For example, the ending of Die Welle has the outsider kid pulling a gun and threatening everyone when the teacher tries to end the experiment, and then killing a friend and then himself.
@Nowhereman10 It is a fundamental basic human need to feel loved and accepted as theorized by Abraham Maslow. It is in our genetic make up. Those that say that dictatorships and fascism can never rise to power and happen here in the U.S. are naive. All it takes is timing, opportunity to seize it and systematic brainwashing.
@ConverseFan7000 In the real story he was fired two years later from his teaching position. But the man wasn't crazy :/ Though it was never said why he was fired.
@ConverseFan7000 no its actually an amizing feat of psychology, it only went on for three days because the teacher stopped it after it started to spread to other schools. It is a great example of how someone in a position of power can affect the group in which they have power over (i.e. Hitler). the teacher did this as an experiment to show his students how the german people were influenced by hitler, after one of his students asked how they could have commited such attrocities
@TheCanadianGuy08 The thing with Hitler was that he was unprecedented when it came to rhetorics. He was not in a position of power when he started influencing people. He had nothing and gained the trust of a nation, not with status but with very powerful speeches.
Rather amazing!
(This does not mean I support the crimes he comitted)
Is there really a question as to how the majority of the German population could appear to simply stand by and allow all of these atrocities to take place in their name? Wake up! A steady regimen of controlled propaganda combined with xenophobia and stone cold ignorance easily controls the masses. If you need proof just look at what's happening in the name of American "democracy" today. In all honesty you might as well switch the word "German" with "American" for more modern pertinence.
@WaldosComputer I think the reception of the War on Terror is enough to prove that we are not in the grip of fascism. More people are disillusioned with the government than blindly supportive
I watched this when I was in 5th grade! Can't believe I got to see it again! They should make a remake of it!!! Great for learning from our past. America had a similar situation during war time with the Japanese. Little known fact about our history, they were in the same situation, only they used horse stalls and the like and got more food.
I googled it a couple of years a ago but couldn't find anything solid.Mostly he said she said reports, and contradicting testamonys. But couldn't find a<anything 100% solid
@leiefilm actually the year that those students were at that age and all in the same class with that teacher is as provable as any piece of living history is. (by which I mean when many, most or all of the people involved are still living).
I vividly recall seeing this as a Sophomore in high school (on vhs lol). Recently I remembered it, and sought out details of the actual high school case the TV movie was based upon. If you look this title up on Wikipedia, there is a link to the original article by the teacher. Worth reading.
my english teacher was making our class do this( like the sitting up and standing up when we were called on) and she just showed us this movie today...i was like the difference between the movie and us is that we didn't want to haha...i think her plan failed
As a former high school AP History teacher and graduate student studying Nazi Germany, this is an amazing video showing how the cult of personality, the desire for identity and social ethos all play a part in how the German nation was held captivated by such a vituprative force.
It's interesting to know this movie isn't just about the Nazis. Part of the point is that propaganda can occur anywhere not only in Germany and can cause the same destruction. Surely we've learnt in the last century that genocide and propaganda did not just occur in Germany (not to say that WWII was not terrible, and RIP for those who died). The USA and any other country is just as vulnerable to succumb to mass propaganda if the public is not educated to think. This movie makes you think.
7th grade math teacher did this to us in 1968. Except he was bald headed and had big glasses and wasn't a tough guy and we all just looked at him in disbelief.
Does this whole experiment continue on and on decade after decade and no matter what the outcome it continually justifies teachers not demanding respect or order in class, so that kids are BORED? do parents have to fork out 25K a year for a military school to repair the damage done to kids who are bored?
@medini2 It's not the kind of thing you could do trivially. In the film, the guy has to carefully choose who he picks on, and the film makes sure he has just the right distribution of people in his class so that it works. Most "mind control" techniques end up failing most of the time.
As for school being boring, to some extent it's meant to be. When you're a young kid, everything is exciting, and you have to get used to the fact it isn't going to stay that way.
I suspect the original teacher had to have been an ex-Nazi...most would not have been able to pull this off like he did. He would have had to have similar personality traits to the authentic officers and Hitler himself.
I remember this from way back. I doubt anyone would have been so dense to not realize what was up after hearing about Nazi Germany.
To answer the question at the start of the clip, many Germans did realize what was going on but were too afraid to do anything. To do so would have been to invite death to the person trying something as well as that person's family.
I always felt bad for Robert.

Angel099833 3 months ago
@Nowhereman10 Hmm good point...so when do you think the people in the United States will wake up to their leaders?
Amocee 2 months ago
@Nowhereman10 It is a fundamental basic human need to feel loved and accepted as theorized by Abraham Maslow. It is in our genetic make up. Those that say that dictatorships and fascism can never rise to power and happen here in the U.S. are naive. All it takes is timing, opportunity to seize it and systematic brainwashing.

did the teacher get sent to a mental hospital after this?
ConverseFan7000 11 months ago
@ConverseFan7000 In the real story he was fired two years later from his teaching position. But the man wasn't crazy :/ Though it was never said why he was fired.
belladanille 10 months ago
@ConverseFan7000 no its actually an amizing feat of psychology, it only went on for three days because the teacher stopped it after it started to spread to other schools. It is a great example of how someone in a position of power can affect the group in which they have power over (i.e. Hitler). the teacher did this as an experiment to show his students how the german people were influenced by hitler, after one of his students asked how they could have commited such attrocities
TheCanadianGuy08 10 months ago
@TheCanadianGuy08 The thing with Hitler was that he was unprecedented when it came to rhetorics. He was not in a position of power when he started influencing people. He had nothing and gained the trust of a nation, not with status but with very powerful speeches.
Rather amazing!
(This does not mean I support the crimes he comitted)
MitsuGTO885 7 months ago
@MitsuGTO885 it also took the situation of the times. Without that situation, few if any would have listened to Hitler.
There is no single "this is what did it", there were a lot of factors.

WaldosComputer 11 months ago 2
@WaldosComputer I think the reception of the War on Terror is enough to prove that we are not in the grip of fascism. More people are disillusioned with the government than blindly supportive

I watched this when I was in 5th grade! Can't believe I got to see it again! They should make a remake of it!!! Great for learning from our past. America had a similar situation during war time with the Japanese. Little known fact about our history, they were in the same situation, only they used horse stalls and the like and got more food.

eyy this happend at 1969 not 67 just telling
newzerz 1 year ago
@newzerz actually it happened in 1967, not '69. When you're going to correct people there are two integral factors:
1) they need to be wrong in the first place (here that is not the case)
2) you need to be correct in the correction you give (here that is not the case)
Thanks for playing.

@leiefilm actually the year that those students were at that age and all in the same class with that teacher is as provable as any piece of living history is. (by which I mean when many, most or all of the people involved are still living).
And it has been.

we were gonna take it to our student heads ;)

I vividly recall seeing this as a Sophomore in high school (on vhs lol). Recently I remembered it, and sought out details of the actual high school case the TV movie was based upon. If you look this title up on Wikipedia, there is a link to the original article by the teacher. Worth reading.

1. Where do you draw the line between a claim and the truth
2. People were stopped through fear tactics and
3. I can't think of one

As a former high school AP History teacher and graduate student studying Nazi Germany, this is an amazing video showing how the cult of personality, the desire for identity and social ethos all play a part in how the German nation was held captivated by such a vituprative force.
kjhistory1517 1 year ago
I saw this, and think the group at the end of this Movie could've been stopped by one look in the eyes from Chuck Norris.
SandmanEnter1991 1 year ago 2
It's interesting to know this movie isn't just about the Nazis. Part of the point is that propaganda can occur anywhere not only in Germany and can cause the same destruction. Surely we've learnt in the last century that genocide and propaganda did not just occur in Germany (not to say that WWII was not terrible, and RIP for those who died). The USA and any other country is just as vulnerable to succumb to mass propaganda if the public is not educated to think. This movie makes you think.

This could have easily been a ride on Epcot center in Walt Disney World.
MarkDarke 1 year ago
7th grade math teacher did this to us in 1968. Except he was bald headed and had big glasses and wasn't a tough guy and we all just looked at him in disbelief.
Does this whole experiment continue on and on decade after decade and no matter what the outcome it continually justifies teachers not demanding respect or order in class, so that kids are BORED? do parents have to fork out 25K a year for a military school to repair the damage done to kids who are bored?
Let's qs everything.
medini2 1 year ago

Typical 80's movie none or one "black" actor
Amocee 1 year ago
I remember this from way back. I doubt anyone would have been so dense to not realize what was up after hearing about Nazi Germany.
To answer the question at the start of the clip, many Germans did realize what was going on but were too afraid to do anything. To do so would have been to invite death to the person trying something as well as that person's family.
