  • Excellent review. Very even handed and language and delivery are just fantastic.

  • Yes it fits D5100. It will not create hotspots in "night mode"

  • Does anybody know if it fits my Nikon D5100 and if u get hotspot if ur shooting IR pictures?

  • Thanks so much:) shame that it moves around so much!

  • On a side note, I think Gordon should get his ears pierced and wear some earrings. Will suit his style

  • thanks for telling that it zooms out/in by itself

I bought a used one and thought it was broken :P

  • hi gordon, what lens is suitable for the nikon d3100 ; )

  • Comment removed

  • Gordon, i'm having a Nikon D3000 camera....and it has only the basic lens with that i can't take any picture which is far... so can u tell me few company's which is selling good lens with cheap price...

  • Well done. And yes, even this yank knows it's pronounced nickon. But who cares?

I have the next gen 18-200 vr2. Love it but far from realizing it's potential. Still learning. Would love to get an ideal setting for handheld indoor low light no flash shots. For a natural result, not that yellow 'glowy' hue. The vr helps clarity a great deal, but as a beginner, I haven't figured out which setting combo will yield best result possible. Thanks for the review!

  • @jimphotocock Jim, you need to spend some time out of North America. It's only you guys who pronounce it Nigh-kon. Remember this is a Japanese company and they pronounce it Knee-kon, so technically I'm closer to the correct pronunciation. Another more simple solution for you would be to simply stop watching videos by English people - or for that matter, anyone outside of N America.

  • @cameralabs I cannot believe that you have actually replied this troll's comment. I appreciate it, though. I live in the states and am the only one among my friends who pronounces it "knee-kon". Not just because it sounds cooler and Japanese, it is the correct way. It is moot that an American guy tries to give pronunciation lessons to a British guy online.

Thank you so very much for your reviews, Gordon! They are extremely helpful.

  • @jibiuro Thanks, I appreciate your comment. I have nothing against people pronouncing things different ways - after all, Brits and Americans say things like Tomato differently - but the thing which gets me is when people say I am (or someone else is) wrong. Not wrong, just different.

  • @cameralabs We in switzerland pronounce it Neekon! XD

  • @jimphotocock Go watch any Japanese Nikon Promotion. (Knee-Kon)

  • @jimphotocock What a idiot. Its pronounced as, "Knee-kon". Get that right you damn shit. I don't care how you pronounce it in your country. Ignorant kid.

  • hmmmm it'll fit with d90? =/

  • Hey, I live by your reviews, and was wondering if this would be an ideal step up from the 18-105mm kit lens that I bought with my Nikon D90, I need the extra zoom for sports photography, but don't want anything which only half does the job!xx

  • do you recommend this or the sigma version? The sigma is almost half the price...

  • I'm new (ish) to photography. Is it possible to mix and match lenses.. like for e.g. a Nikon Lens with a Canon body? It's a stupid question, I know - I'm probably wasting your time asking you this.

  • @Fakeblad If you're stil wondering, you can buy an adaptor to use Canon lenses on Nikon bodies, but not the other way around - due to the physical construction of Nikon bodies.

With third-party manufacturers (Sigma, Tamron, Tokina) you have to buy lenses with the appropriate mount for your camera body.

  • I am newbie - would you plz tell me whether i should be looking for my warranty papers on this lens because when it's zoomed out in horizontal position, and if I move camera in slightly jerky manner, the inner barrel (don't know what else to call it) wobbles very very so slightly? Mine however doesn't close or open in vertical position under its own weight.

  • Will this lens fits to Nikon D3100?....thx

  • your the best "cameralabs". Always go here 1st, before buying any camera stuff. Thanks for all your help!

I also love the way you say Nikon, "Nick on" (most of) North American, says "Nike on" Anyway nice job!!!

  • i started watching your reviews 3 months ago and now im a owner of nikon d5000 with 18-55 VR and 70-300 lenses. Untill now i cant get enough of this kit provided but my aim is to shoot more of indoor model photography or photography of ramp models. What lens do you suggest would be the best for me??

  • So the creep thng only happens if you are not holding the lens? Or does it still go up or down regardless of holding the lens?

  • is this compatible with the new d7000 ?

  • @arwinabracia01 Yes.

  • @arwinabracia01 Yes, in fact comes as a kit in States.

  • Is this a good pair with Nikon D3100 and is this lens good for traveling? :) Also, is this lens an AF-S kind of lens? :) Thanks, hoping for a good response. :D

  • This is usable fr Nikon D3100? I dont need any converter or anything I can just buy it and mount?

  • Gordon, Can you please review 80-400mm nikkor lens and post it on youtube? also can you suggest the best telephoto lens for my D90 in this price range? Thanks

  • Hi Gordon

Have just purchased nikons new 7000 and am using a n 18/ 135 with it Could it be "overkill " to get the 18/200 v11 lens the subject of your excellent review as I was planning on doing ?

  • Hi Gordon...i was wondering if i should get this lens in VR ll? What lens would you suggest for portrait photography? :)

  • is this compatible for the D60?

  • its funny how sir. gordon smiles when the lens creep down..

  • Gordon I am buying a canon 550 D can u suggest a lens for zoom and some wild life photography ...thanx

  • @drdukeful If you like the look of this Nikkor lens, then get the Canon 18-200mm equivalent.

  • I always like your videos...... keep it up.

  • beginner question here,

can ''nikon lenses'' also be used by canon camera's for example?

    I'd be pleased to know!

  • @BinnyNL NO.

  • @BinnyNL You need the converter for Nikon. Then it will work.

  • Why people from the UK pronounce NIKON but the US people as NAIKON? And which pronunciation is correct? Thx

  • @YevGus In Japanese, it sounds more like NIKON instead of NAIKON.

  • I purchased a Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 Di LD Macro Zoom Lens but I can't seem to be able to attach it to my Nikon D60. I read many reviews that this lens is suppose to workon this camera. Can you help me?

  • hi Gordon, firstly good videos, secondly Queenstown & indeed NZ rocks, i was there last yr for a couple of months, furgburger ammmaamma yaaa ammm,

Finally what do you mean ------ zoomed in to 200mm by working @ the equivalent of 300mm ??????? i dont understand ?

    cheers from Ireland

  • @andyscott0 All DX bodies effectively multiply the focal length by 1.5 times. So 200mm becomes 300mm. See the lenses guide at cameralabs . com...

  • @cameralabs But isn't this a DX specific lens making its 18-200mm exactly that on a DX camera such as the d80?

  • @cameralabs But isn't this a DX specific lens making its 18-200mm exactly that on a DX camera such as the d80?

  • @cameralabs So a D7000 with a 60mm lens will efectively be in a 90mm range? or does the lensa have to be DX?

  • @BlackArmy6 The 60mm would give an equivalent field of view of a 90mm.

  • @andyscott0 I was going to ask the same question.

  • Hi Gordon!

    I'm new to photography.

    I'm asking for a Nikon D3100 Kit, and a 55-200mm VR lens.

Does this seem like a good setup for a beginner?

And do you have any suggestions/tips?

    Thanks

    -Andrew

  • @ZaterPhotography a great setup, but get the D90.

  • Oooo. He's a chubby lens.

  • Hi Gordon. Great review, and I've actually just bought an 18-200 (Making myself skint in the process), but I was wondering, where is the beautiful scenery that you use to demonstrate the zoom range of the lenses? Surely you don't fly out there every time a new lens comes out, do you?!

  • @RS250Squid Nope, I live there! It's Queenstown, New Zealand.

  • Hi Gordon, hi all!

I'd really need some advice... I am using a Nikon D300 and I already have the following lenses: Nikkor 18-55 DX VR, Nikkor 55-200 DX VR and a Sigma 10-20 for wider angles. I am considering buying one of the two in a couple of weeks: Nikkor 16-85 or the subject of this review, the 18-200. Buying the 16-85, I can actually sell my 18-55, and if I go for the 18-200, I can even sell both of my existing Nikkor lenses. I mostly shoot landscapes. Which of the two would you buy?

  • @luci66 It really does depend on how far you'd zoom.

the 18-200 is good for doing landscapes that you're not really close to.

The 16-85 would be great for wideangle pictures from afar.

    Hope I helped :)

  • @DaveSpectacular Thank you so much, you did!

  • @luci66 :)

    Cool

  • hi !

i have the same lens but i see my VR color is a silver not Red like yours !

and i have lock on my lens zoom!

is that something to say about it ? or it is just a color ?

    thanks !

  • @TheVeetle you have the latest version II - see my review of it at cameralabs . com.

  • helloo gordon, 1 question, can I use this lens to my d3000?

  • @aixoruz hi i was wanting to know the same thing could you let me know about it?

  • Hello Gordon. Im new the the Dslr world and am thinking of buying the nikon d90. do you have any recommendations for lenses. I would be using the camera for a variety of different photos, any help is appreciated

  • My lens won't focus. I'm new to photography, what am I doing wrong? Help.

  • @knsclh996 you might have to give a bit more info about what's going on

  • i don't t have money to buy that 18-200

  • Which lens would u recommend for someone who is going to asia for 6 monts and want to take great shots of landscapes, temples and people. I am going to buy a Nikon d90 or d5000.

  • Hi. i was just wondering if the Sigma 18-200mm are any good at all?

  • what is the difference in ability for a 18-70mm lens vs 18-200 lens ?

Does "200" mean, how much closer can it zoom to a desired point ?

  • hi gordan whats better the nikkor 18-200mm VR or the nikkor 18-200 VR ii

  • is the nikkor 18-200mm VR zoom lens campatible for the D3000

  • what is the difference between 18-200mm and 55-200mm? thanks cameralabs

  • I like your smile 2.38

  • can I use that with my D3000?

  • Is this lens compatible

    With a Nikon D5000

  • Ah, I see now that the link is pointed to the review of the VRII on the website, maybe that's why I can't seem to find it then. :)

  • I just found this clip after looking at the VRII-version first, and hearing about being able to do comparison between this lens and the Sigma fex I went to your website, but I can't seem to find the comparison between the other lenses and the Nikkor, could you point me in the direction of these?

    Thank You!

  • Hi Gordon,

  • Hi Gordon,

I want to buy a lens to shoot concert, sports and night photography please recommend a lens.

    Thanks in advance

    Chris

  • good for d3000?

  • Hey Gordon, excellent reviews!

would this be a bad option for a d5000 body? thank you

  • Hi Gordon! Im thinking of buying a second lens next to my 18-55mm kitlens. I mostly use my D5000 to shoot photos of supercars, so carspotting. What would be the most accurate lens for this kind of photography, a zoom lens or a fixed lens like lets say the 50mm 1.4? I want to get cars in the center with a blurred background, so that the car is pictured very sharp. Does anyone know what lens i should go for? Thank you very much!!

  • @sga4life The 50mm f1.4 would allow blurred backgrounds, but also see my tutorial on blurring action shots at dslrtips . com...

  • I bought the nikon d-3000 and i dont which lens would be good for like people swimming and parties, do you have an idea of which lens i shoulb buy?

  • can this lens fit in d5000?

  • @EpicShotzz offcourse

  • hello, how do i know if this lens works on the d5000?, and how can i know taht about other lenses?, thank you.

  • Will this lens work on a d500 body? I'm planing to get one. thanks!

  • hi i am a great fan of cameralabs... the only site that makes sense for a amateur. i need your help tho. i would be buying DSLR for the first time. I am planning for the Nikon D5000 + AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II Lens. Can you please let me know if this is a good buy. ALSO i have a doubt on Autfocus. Does the lens that i have mentioned have autofocus ?? Thanks in Advance

  • @ziceholidays AF-S stands for "autofocus single," so yes.

  • @akshay03 actually the s stands for Silent Wave Motor

  • @AZNFlipy12 No, it doesn't.

    bit (dot) ly (slash) cF5pGT

It stands for "autofocus single-servo" to be precise.

  • @akshay03 are you talking about the one on the lens or the af type such as single, servo or continuous?

  • i heard that the new nikons had problems with the shutter speed, is that true?

  • can you tell me if this will be an ideal lens for D300S ?

  • @jahnab If you want the best quality, I'd go for the 16-85mm. If you want the most convenience, get the 18-200mm. See the Recommended Nikkor lenses guide in the lenses section at cameralabs . com.

  • @cameralabs : Thanks a lot...

  • @cameralabs : Thanks a lot...

  • this lens very loucy... i hate it... Nikon 18-200

  • Hello, great videos and great website! but I have a question that I have not seen answered. I have a D5000 and want this lens, but was told by a guy who was obviously a better photographer than myself that the 18-200mm lens was too big/heavy for the D5000 body and stressed how it would make the setup unbalanced. Is this truly an issue, or was he just trying to be me to buy a better camera, haha

  • @harimyoo -

you should have no worries using the D5000 with the 18-200. I use this setup myself, as well as using it with my D90. Unless you want to shoot super-telephoto, its the only lense you'll ever need!

  • Should I sell a 70-300 and an 18-55 and get this lens?

  • @CharIiePresents no way!! the 70-300 has more Focal lenght..! and the 18-55 can be useful if u dont want to use a heavy gear...!

  • @NlkOlVy yeah but changing lenses are such a pain and a 18-200 covers all my needs of a lens :L

  • @CharIiePresents then go and get one... XD

  • Given the close price would the 70-300mm vr or this lenses be preferable for a walk around lense?

  • Hello. I have been debating which lens i'm going to get for my camera, I have a nikon d90 and I've been looking for a wedding, portrait and landscape in just 1 lens. Would you recommend what kind of lens should I get?

  • @shintotz Head on over to cameralabs . com and click on the lenses section - then go to the recommended Nikkor lenses link and you'll see the models I'd go for.

  • can you tell me if it will work on my nikon D40 ,thanks,

  • @colxdark Yes. I use it on my D40 and D300

  • Hi. I'm planning on buying Nikon D5000. Cud i buy this lens and mount on the d5000? thanks.

  • Got the 55-200 DX VR for my d3000. Just awesome! :)

  • You are an outstanding reviewer.

  • Would this be a good lens for landscape shots?

  • @ExNihiloJimmy Yes! 18mm is sufficient for wideangle shots.

  • o lol ?

    18-200?

I need to get that ~_~

  • You are correct. There is a zoom lock on 18-200mm VR II. Lens still creeps but I do not care. Glad that I got it with my D90.

  • Comment removed

  • @EphraimRodrigez

Neither. Nikkor = brand of lenses produced by Nikon.

  • well thank you (know it already but thank you)

  • Nope thats what the nikon range of lenses are called I believe

  • i dont get the problem with lense creeping.....idk about you guys but if im hand holding my camera i hold the lens barrel in one hand and the body in the other.....my hand always keeps the lense from being able to creep by stoping the ring from moving

  • He specified exactly why that might be a problem. If you mount on a tripod pointing straight up, or down, it may pose a problem.

  • I can't help but to laugh when the lens falls down slowly under it own weight..xD

  • @xXxmidgexXx The lens talking" OMG i hope that mysterious thing doesnt happen again...NO NOT THE 100MM MARKK EEEEEE I MELTINGG AHHHHH!!!"

  • My 18-200mm VR makes a high pitch noise when focusing (not the click on and off but in between). Is this normal? Thanks!

  • @codeoverride I'm fairly positive that is normal. It's just a noise that is produced when VR is engaged. It wont make the noise when the VR is off. My lens and many other do the same. It's normal and you've got nothing to worry about!

  • Nikkor AF-S 18-105mm F/3.5-5.6G ED VR it´s ok for a nikon d5000? what are you recomand me??? pls answer

  • I have just purchased D300s and I am wondering which lenses to get, low light and normal everyday use lens, if u can help me with few choices...ty

  • Have a look at my recommended Nikon lenses - you can find it in the lenses section at cameralabs . com...

  • This is the lens that I have initially purchased with my D300 and I am glad that I did.

  • I'll be buying the 18-200mm VR II next week, along with the D90 body. Very excited, as all I can find for reviews are praising the quality of both items.

  • does that lens work on a nikon d3000?

  • @wwpw100

    Yes! It does.

  • Will this lens fit D3000?

  • yes

  • most nikon lenses are all interchangeable

  • Can somebody tell me, if the new VR II lens still creep like this one, or is the problem fixed ??

  • as far as I've seen they put a 'zoom lock' , so it doesnt creeps out.....but only available in 18mm(if I'm not mistaken)

  • human vision is 50 mm so a 500mm is

    X10 a 250mm is x5

i hope it can help u

  • I just bought the newest version of this lens for my D300s. It has a lock button to stop the lens from creeping. And yes it will fit your d300.

  • it seems that the d300 was never mention to work with this lens. do this lens work with d300? anyone?

  • all nikon lenses have the same mount.

  • Hey guys i need help.....when some lenses say...200-500mm how much zoom is that(like 10x) please help me thankss :)

  • 500/200=2.5x

  • 500 mm is 2.5x more than 200 mm but 500mm is 27x more zoom than 18mm.

  • Thanks fot the review.

Gordon, which one is better in IQ the 18-200 or the 18-105? I care about sharpness and image quality, not so much about the lens range.

  • Hi Gordon does this lens works on nikon d300

  • If your lens creeps, use a thick elastic band. I know it doesn't look great, but it works. If your picky, get a black silicon wrist band. In black, it is hardly noticeable.

    Vince Ravon.

  • Hi Gordon,

I recently purchased a nikkor 18-200 VR II lens. According to nikon, this VR II lens is equipped with a new zoom mechanism to combat the "zoom creep" and it also comes with a zoom lock at 18mm so the lens won't fall down if you're carrying it pointed downwars. My problem is that it still has the zoom creep somewhere between 55-185. Is this still normal or defective if we base it on the word from nikon? Appreciate it if you could help me on this..Thanks and more power.

  • I haven't tested it so can't say, but I'd suspect it still suffers from some creep, especially over time, but maybe not as much as the Mark I version.

  • does this lens work on a D60?

  • Yes it does.

  • when you look at a lens creeping, it seems kinda cute with a cartoon sound effect playing in your mind, but seriously speaking, lens creeping is a burden..

  • Could I use this lens on a Nikon FE Film SLR??

  • It's for DX SLRs.. You need a lens for FX bodies to use the for film SLRs

  • Hi Gordon, i'd like to say thanks for helping me choose my first dslr, your website was fantastic. I have a nikon d3000 with the 18-55mm vr lens and am thinking of buying a second lens, would i be better to buy the nikkor 55-200mm vr lens or buy say a sigma or tamron 18-200mm lens? and are there any problems with the 3piece lens like the sigma 18-200mm compared to the 2piece lens of the nikkor, any help on this would be great

  • sir is it ok if im going to use it to my d3000?

  • Yes it works on any DX format body.

  • What's the difference in quality between this reviewed lens and this one :

    AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II (11.1x)

  • theres also a lens lock so the barrel doesnt spin back and forth

  • planing to buy this for my d3000 is it ok cameralab?

  • yep, it'd be great - dont forget you can support me by shopping through the affiliate stores page at cameralabs . com!

  • would the tamron be worth it for a person on a budget looking for a 18-200mm?

  • gordon - im definitly getting the d5000 but would a sigma 18-250mm af vr lens be good

    thanks

  • whats the difference between a zoom lens and a VR lens?

  • VR stands for vibration reduction so it is easier to handhold the camera

  • gordon, is it a good lens for nikon d5000

  • It's a great lens for any Nikon DX format body, including the D5000.

  • your videos help very very much

  • The bad thing about this lens is that it is old..... 2005 much...
