A question for atheists: what is the point of it all? If the universe will ultimately die off with a sigh, what was the meaning of everything? All of our inventions, degrees, education, money and pleasures; all of our dreams, hopes and aspirations; our knowledge, fears and failures, everything that we ever worked for will amount to absolutely NOTHING. Nobody will be around to value or critique what we have done. Certainly none of us will be around to gloat or feel ashamed about anything.
@alfkowitz since we aren't GUARANTEED any other life than this one, it's important to live this life to its fullest potential and enjoy it while it lasts. that's what makes this life so unique and beautiful =)

How significant is one trillionth of anyone's life? If you live one hundred years on earth that would amount to 3/100 of one earth second. In fact, a 100 year life on earth would comprise even a far smaller fraction of an entire eternal life. Thus living an eternal life would make a 100 year life on earth completely insignificant.

Generally some good quotes, unfortunately Mark Twain never said the "Billions" quote. You always have to check out quotes belonging to Twain, Franklin, Adams and Lincoln especially hard. When someone doesn't know who said it, those are the usual suspects they assign it to. The word "billion" was not in common usage in English then. Even up until the 1940s it wasn't clear what it meant, e.g. 1000 million or a million million. We borrowed it from the French, but not until after Twain was dead.
