@Scoforever I think it's telling that so few atheists are prisoners (this has been shown in numerous studies by the way). It seems that an attitude of free-thought encourages people to start actually thinking about ethics, and may rule out the possibility of using their religion as a scapegoat for their crimes.
I don't think we can make any conclusions in this case without studies into it. Even with studies showing that atheism has a causal link with reduced crime would have a difficult time showing that atheism caused that reduction in crime. It may be possible to prove a causal link between skepticism and reduced crime.
@Scoforever Well, if studies showed a causal link then that would mean that atheism was causal. If you mean a correlational link, then yes, that would mean there's still more work to do. I would bet, though, that levels of skepticism and atheism would walk just about step in step.
@Scoforever I should have qualified this - certain types of crime are enacted by religionists in greater proportion than atheists. This is clear. In other cases, like the one depicted in this horrid video, a MUCH better yard stick would be an individual assessment of secular morality, regardless of level of religiosity.
@Scoforever Education - increasing free-thought (along with skepticism and atheism), standard of living and living environment - could well be a major player in both religiously and non-religiously motivated crimes. We would of course have to differentiate between secular and religious schooling.
@wavenaboard I could be wrong, but isn't atheism generally associated with higher education and socio-economic status. I would say that is why you don't see as many atheists in prison. There may still be an ethical connection, but I'd guess that the socio-economic situation is a stronger link. Of course, you could still ask why there is that correlation between education and status and irreligiousness, but there's more at work here than "atheists don't go to prison because they're more ethical".
@bradsam: minor detail. Hitler was Catholic. But let's not let inconvenient facts get in the way of an otherwise vacuous point. ^_^ Atheists represent about 10 percent of the US population. They represent a little under half a percent of the prison population. Christian representation in the prisons matches its representation in the general population. This isn't evidence of anything, but it's curious.

He needed their wealth to continue his campaigns until the very end and had the Vatican's support for a long time and even at the end, they never excommunicated him or anything even remotely close. The Soviet/Cambodia/China/Vietnam models are socialism only in that they call themselves such. It seems that an attitude of free-thought encourages people to start actually thinking about ethics, and may rule out the possibility of using their religion as a scapegoat for their crimes.

I don't think we can make any conclusions in this case without studies into it. Even with studies showing that atheism has a causal link with reduced crime would have a difficult time showing that atheism caused that reduction in crime. It may be possible to prove a causal link between skepticism and reduced crime.

@Scoforever I should have qualified this - certain types of crime are enacted by religionists in greater proportion than atheists. This is clear. In other cases, like the one depicted in this horrid video, a MUCH better yard stick would be an individual assessment of secular morality, regardless of level of religiosity.

@wavenaboard I could be wrong, but isn't atheism generally associated with higher education and socio-economic status. I would say that is why you don't see as many atheists in prison. There may still be an ethical connection, but I'd guess that the socio-economic situation is a stronger link. Of course, you could still ask why there is that correlation between education and status and irreligiousness, but there's more at work here than "atheists don't go to prison because they're more ethical".

@bradsam: minor detail. Hitler was Catholic. But let's not let inconvenient facts get in the way of an otherwise vacuous point. ^_^ Atheists represent about 10 percent of the US population. They represent a little under half a percent of the prison population. Christian representation in the prisons matches its representation in the general population. This isn't evidence of anything, but it's curious.

There are a lot of contradictory statements by Hitler.

The issue is not whether Hitler was an atheist or not. It is whether atheism causes totalitarianism and death. I am not convinced of that. And even if it were proven that atheism caused totalitarianism it would not have an effect on it's validity.

@unearthlydwarf , Wrong again. In social society at the time of Jesus, to "turn the other cheek" was a major insult as for someone to lightly slap you with the opposite hand (backhand) meant you were lower than they, in they touch your face with the same hand on the same side of the face (the palm) you were on the same level as they. That was considered a major insult. Jesus also "said" some nasty things which I don't have enough characters to post so I will add in my next response.

@unearthlydwarf , Actually you are wrong. It's far more likely to wage war on behalf of a faith than it is to do so because you have none. Hitler was a devout Catholic/Christian who was supported financially and publicly by the vatican. The Crusades? The Holy Wars? Any of those ring any bells? The recent cop killer in Tacoma who thought he was Jesus? It's the religious that are FAR more dangerous and history is the proof. You cannot name a single leader who waged war to push their non-belief.

Wow, you're just completely taking those verses out of context. He's not talking about physical war! anyone knows that he's referring to dividing the Judaism! As for Hitler, if you read the earlier posts, no one could really say whether he was atheist or catholic because he was one day and not another. And i CAN name an atheist murderer. ever hear of Stalin? Yeah, he kinda murdered priests and other religious people because they were opposition. so...do some fact checking

Quoting Stalin? It doesn't matter, he didn't attempt theocracide or genocide of all who didn't hold his beliefs. He waged war on any and all who could advance his cause regardless of belief or lack thereof. Do you think atheists were safe from his wrath? Of course not so it's not a viable comparison.

when you really look at it though, you are correct and he even spoke against atheism. which says to me that he was just a full on bullshitter. lol. and there were a lot of things he did that suggested that he was a mystic. but that doesn't take away from the fact that he rejected the church later. and i checked out your channel and i like your stuff!

You say he rejected the church later? Who? Hitler? Hardly... He needed their wealth to continue his campaigns until the very end and had the Vatican's support for a long time and even at the end, they never excommunicated him or anything even remotely close. They just shied away and didn't say anything. The Vatican has excommunicated people for FAR less so I don't see how he "rejected" them considering they didn't act in kind.

@Scoforever Socialism as a concept is far from disgusting, but the execution is not as Marx or Engels would have desired. The Soviet/Cambodia/China/Vietnam models are socialism only in that they call themselves such. But they do not uphold any of the values of socialism, such as the liberation of the poor working class, communal care, and the abolition of government.

1) Hitler was a Christian for most of his life, and Christianity was a fundamental part of his political campaign during his rise to power. 2) Although he disavowed Christianity late in life, he never stopped believing in "a divine creator". HE WAS NEVER AN ATHEIST. 3) There's nothing "logical" about saying that "God-given morals make people less likely to kill", when instances of religiously inspired violence have repeated themselves countless times throughout history.

@unearthlydwarf Hitler was Catholic and frequently referenced God in Mein Kampf as well as his later speeches. Your still believing old World War II propaganda, that has long since been proven incorrect. If you are suggesting the only reason you are a moral person is due to a belief in God then that proves not that God is the root of morality, but that you aren't a very good person. Human decency is more than enough.

Hitler not only referenced God. he also referenced Darwin. read the section on Social Darwinism. It's quite unchristian. hitler was not a christian because he did not follow the teachings of Christ. @unearthlydwarf Do you think would be comfotable with immorality like rape and murder without god standing over your shoulder telling them they'll go to hell? I don't. I'm an atheist who does the right thing not because god tells me to, but because I know what' s right and strive to help others. Belief in a god who inspired the crusades, the inquisition, and the 9/11 attacks isn't my idea of a good moral compass. I'm not "an animal without God"; I just do the right thing for its own sake.

Exactly. I am offended by the idea that my rights come from a collective group but I am even more offended by the idea that my rights come from a bearded man in the sky who I don't believe in. Rights are an individual matter.

The what ur children r reall learning special u'll c history is being rewrittten. I think we by expansion introduce other diseases 2 others w/out inmunities. We thought we were helping by changin their traditions. We've tried 2 make mends w/ reserving land 4 them. The Constitution says life, liberty,& persuit of happiness than wat it was intended life, liberty, & property becauz they thought the debate of slavery would b decided later. & property might b a way 4 the slaveowners 2 hold on2 slaves

But u have 2 set something to say where ur rights come from. They don't come from the government. So where do they come from? 10 commandments "under God" r the traditions of our land like other lands have their traditions. Christians use science. scientists can be Christian. We r not flat Earthers.

Native American containment and massacres continued well into the history of the US. Trail of tears? Come on. Trying to make the American government seem guiltless, how absurd. The American governments has installed dictators around the world and financed indiscriminate murder and massacre. Presidents have personally signed away tax money to support terrorists who killed women and children. The US government is responsible for millions of deaths in past 50 years.

Well in some cases genocide may or not be the correct word. The removal, exile, and murder of Natives was at certain points just to get land instead of extermination being the main goal. However, there were campaigns by the US where genocide was the intent.

I wouldn't deny that there were some war like tribes, the Aztecs being one of the worst, but that does not excuse crimes committing by European governments. The scale of aggression by the Europeans against the so called Natives was much greater than vis versa.
