  • This song was written for Noel Murphy, both he and Ralph were living and playing in West London.

  • Beautiful song ........♪♫ ♥

  • have been a fan of Nanci's for years, she is a wonderful performer, and really does justic to this GREAT Irish tune...................she was IRISH in a former life me thinks, as she has that certain something that makes her unique with singing Irish songs....................:)

  • I'm irish and that is pure class, nanci rocks. She has that haunting(in a good way) voice that most female irish singers have. Makes the hair's in the back of your neck stand up.

  • impressive an English man actually wrote that song... and yes Nanci does it beautifully!!!

  • Such a beautiful and moving song....

  • Nanci does this beautifully I have listened to this album more times than I can count...

  • powerful stuff

  • This is an amazing version of an Irish classic. I am Irish and i think its the best version i have ever heard.

  • To my best friend, Patrick Braxton Boling: May the road rise up to meet you and may the wind be ever at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face and the rain fall softly on your fields. And, until we meet again, may God hold

you in the hollow of his hand. I am, forever, your pal, Richard Please say hello to Liz, your Dad-Hugh, Arrby and Ruby--I love them all and miss them, too! Especially Arrby and Ruby and you! Sleep well, Marine--I've got your back!

  • For the information of the Americans. Clare is a County in the west of Ireland. Listen to the words of the original and you'll hear that the love interest in this song is Josephine, not Clare." It nearly beaks my heart when I think of Josephine .I promised I'ld be coming home with pockets full of green"

Ralph Mc Tell ,the author, is english.

  • Nancy. You continue to brighten up my day as always. Love you.

    Ray

  • This version is pleasant enough, but it doesn't even scratch the surface of the original, in my humble opinion.

FYI any Americans out there making assumptions - Ralph Mctell, who is English, wrote this song from direct experience; it's a reflection on a week spent working on an English building site with a bunch of Paddy builders. It's not about the Irish making their way to the Freeworld.

  • @TheSafecore I'm an American! and I always understood it, just from the lyrics, as an Irishperson who was in England.

  • Does anyone know if there exists a video of Nanci singing this wonderful song?

    Thank you ;-)

  • thanks for posting,,

  • My maiden name is Clare, and this song makes me think of all they went through to come to America & begin a life here, and to hear it song by a woman, thinkin of me g-g-g grandmothers' I listen with a smile & a tear in my eye. Beautiful!

  • the only time i feel alright is when im into drinking,it can sort of ease the pain of it and levels out my thinkin.aye thats about right

  • In the mists of history of every genre of music ever written, there are those artists who set the bench mark for all the rest.. Those who live and breathe their own unique style.

Nancy is one who leads the way. Ray

  • Nanci, come to the Virgin islands! Sing at Molley Malones bar on St Thomas. Capt. Joe

  • Love this song, love Nanci. But can Nanci sing this; does it work?? I don't know. I don't think so.

  • @Landulphcounter what do you mean??? !

  • She does a wonderful job. Its her rendition, her voice, her melancholy. I miss Ireland. I have been gone too long. Clare is such a beautiful county and it is the home of traditional Irish music

  • beauty from a voice!!

  • I like her version so much! Thx for posting post person!

  • A painful song to listen to.

  • soothing

  • i have listened to loads of versions of this song and nothing touches the original by Ralph Mctell, a classic song that is perfection in its original form.

  • As a County Clare man this song means a lot to me ♥

  • Just saw her last night in Waukegan, Illinois. Outrageously good. The crowd was very small, however, but Nanci put on a superb performance. Still looks and sounds great. Can't wait for the new CD June 9.

  • Just saw her tonight in Madison. She didn't play this song but the concert itself was soulful. The Texas influenced style is so cool.

  • Great song and great singer!!!

  • Nanci won a Grammy for this album - Best Folk Album if my memory serves me correctly.

  • I have always loved this song written by Ralph McTell and I enjoy his version too,but Nanci does an exquisite version and I have luckily seen her in concert several times and she usually includes this song. I'm not from Co.Clare at all but I have been there and while there I kept singing this song in my head. It's just a shame that this video doesn't show Nanci actually singing it in concert.I also love her singing ' Tecumseh Valley ' and ' Across The Great Divide' from the same album.

  • I agree - one of his best, but there are so many fine songs of his to choose among :-)

    The "real" deal:

    Enjoy :-)

  • I bought the CD when it first came out but it vanished. It's probably the best folk cover album ever made. I think I need to check Amazon, this reminded me how much I miss it.

  • heddalee; Pete Cummins

  • i really thought i had commented on this one already! thank you Fergal for the discovery of this song ! It would have helped if you had told me who sang it! it took me ages to buy that song not knowing her name!!absolutely beautiful! feels homely! thanks a million

  • Can you check the CD and tell me who's singing backup on this?

    Thanks :))

  • Hi there, not sure if anyone has answered your query yet,or if you have found out yourself, but the person singing backing vocals on Nanci singing ' From Clare To Here ' is Pete Cummins. He is listed as Irishman's duet and harmony vocal. Hope this has been helpful. Can't wait to get Nanci's new album next month.

  • From a Clare man---love you Nanci.

  • "The only time I feel alright is

    when I'm into drinking

It can sort of ease the pain of it and

    it levels out my thinking"

    can totally relate....

  • You said it, too true. Lovely version of a lovely song...

  • Super version. Sometimes listening to a different version of a song makes you realize how great the song is.

  • Didn't realise that this was a Ralph McTell song either though I have had a copy for 15 years. Lovely song, beautifully sung

  • watch?v=F94zeeVW3uU ;-)

Nancy's great cover version is rather different, as you can probably tell.

  • Love Nanci! Didn't know this was a Ralph McTell song though. Anyone who hasn't heard f him, check out 'The streets of London'. Another great song!

  • i too, looked for ages before i accidentally found the cd! absolutely beautiful!!

  • i absolutely adore this woman, I was brought up listening to her and I love everything about her. this song is beautiful

  • me too its magic

  • when I was young, my auntie would play the guitar and I would sing. Its one of the beautiful memories I have. and still to this day, I go to stay and the guitar comes out and we sing Nanci songs all night. I love it.

  • I knew this guy in Menorca who sang this song...I've forgotten his name now but he lives near Mahon. Lovely song.

  • Lovely version of this fantastic Ralph Mctell song - quite different though.
