Why don't the people who live in these countries just demand honest governments that don't steal from them and thwart development in every way? If government is for you and not against you, you have real jobs paying real money and can live in a real house, not a hut made out of bottles.
I wonder if people who don't recycle would do so if they knew they could provide a home for a child?
Might be worth doing a "feed the children" type commercial in each area of the project to see if people might bring their bottles right to the site! I was a volunteer coordinator and many of our volunteers were folks who saw what we were doing as they dropped off donations. Just a thought.

What happens when they need to be taken down?? where does the plastic go then?? Recycle them and build with cob!! Plastic getting used like this just means more plastic has to be produced instead of recycled.

Take a look at "great pacific garbage patch" this is where all the waste plastic that ends up in the ocean ends up and it is slowly suffocating the oceans. This isn't environmentally friendly, its just using waste that should be correctly disposed of! Cob or straw would be environmentally friendly!!

@MidnightMarrow The mere cost of shipping before they can even recycle them make them beneficial to use where they are. In addition they do make a good wall.

@Bak3dB3an Possible but vaccum sealing of each bottle will play a factor, the you must account for the loss of volume in each bottle for the loss of air. Compression is not a factor in a vaccum +/- xxfor temperature during the seasons. Would make a great study!
This has been done since the 70's was even used in the rebuilding of Indonesia in 2005 watch Garbage warrior uses not just bottles too do build his houses this does look cool but they make using bottles look like they are not using them
@marsouka1 because big utility companies stand to lose a lot of money should this catch on. I recommend seeing Garbage Warrior that the above poster mentioned. It will show you exactly why we don't do this. You will get a glimpse into the bureaucracy road blocks that prevent us from even trying these things.
earthship and mike reynolds have been building with cans bottles tins , aluminium can and old car tyres for over 30 years , though this is a good start
maybe they should just set up soda shops so that people can go and get their tanks filled with sweet soda nectars for a cheap price, and just stop making so much plastic

Don't plastics leach contaminants (carcinogens, etc.)into water? Wouldn't this be a problem, particularly when used for water tanks?

Solutions:
1- the 1 child policy , globally
2- eco-bottles or reduce soda/ bottled water consumption . I botle coud be refilled SEVERAL TIMES
3- Container-deposit legislation (PFAND)
4- in some countries theres been made everything even cloth out of recycled bottle plastic
5- AGAIN STOP HAVING MORE THAN 1 CHILDREN FOR THE PLANET'S SAKE
