  • That thing was like "LOOK AT MAH EYEBALLLZ"

I also like how it feels voilated at the end when it's just sitting in it's burrow, like it's just been raped.

  • I hope he spears your hand idiot lol

  • Not worth the risk! Thumbs up on the bravery!

  • I'm going to laugh if you ever post a video of yourself handling this guy again and he gets pissed.

  • today's lesson: playing with blade wielding lightning fast stomatopods the size of your forearm.

  • Comment removed

  • Crazy MOFO

  • yes.. balls indeed, & it could totally mess up your naked fingers, man really trusts the shrimp. I watch these other vids of a man trusting a large saltwater croc.. that scares the poo out.

  • How much is that thing lol. So awesome.

  • stop fapping that mantis

  • What a pretty little lady. Very calm, too.

Though it's pretty cute how she was pouting at the end.

  • This video is missing tempura and soy sauce....

  • wow youve got a pair

  • it cold rip your finger off

  • chinese people loves it.

  • looks delicious

  • Balls. This guy has them.

  • You do realize you could loose a finger right? - Holyshit man. YOUR CRAZY.

  • monstrous

  • k...I'm impressed. You sir, have large balls.

  • could it break your finger?

  • @BWCmike It could cut his finger off easily... there are two types, smashers and spearers. Smashers are strong enough to break glass, break rocks in half, and demolish shells. Spearers can cut a 6in fish in half easily... it would have fucked his shit if it wanted

  • SOO CUTE

  • ur basicly holding a gernade thats about to explode...how the fusk do u do it

  • I would be scared touching one of those things, I heard they could knock the tips off your fingers.

  • Adorable

  • very cool

  • Now let it punch you.

  • Damnedest thing. WTF lol

  • CRAZY

  • Tank is acrylic so no. Their not poisonous but wouldn't blink an eye if one type had poisonous flesh. And he was a very calm individual.

  • they can crush fingers to ? i see little clips about how this things can crush things with so much force lol

  • Don't try this. I got hit by one of those at a seafood market, bleed so badly.

  • you are crazy!!!

  • you are crazy!!!

  • aren't they posinus?

  • @noname77777777777777 No, but they can punch pretty well.

  • 0:38 cute laugh

  • Mantis shrimps have increadibly varying personalities from individual to individual.

Some let you do pretty much anything with them that does not hurt, others would try and kill you if they got the chance.

  • you got nerve

  • why don't u grab a gran ceola?

  • could you fry it for me?

  • :O

im afraid of my clownfish he attacks me if i try to move a small rock or adjust something it feels like a beesting without the long stinging

  • You do know that the mantis shrimp has the best vision in all of the animal kingdom, correct? They can tell if photons are spinning clockwise or counterclockwise! its amazing!

  • NNNNNAAAAAAWWWW! :3 it's so cuuute!

  • thats fakin dangerous, you...

  • You know that can break your finger like a twig

  • Balls of Steel you got there.

  • although I know nothing of this creature or its habits.. I would say you are very lucky to not have any broken fingers or any other injuries

  • think id rather stick a finger in a 220 socket then get hit by that shrimp

  • I am amazed you were able to handle it. I thought they'd be more aggressive than this.

  • Ill bring the butter..lets eat!

  • your hand will release oil in the tank and it is bad for the water

When the mantis shrimp hit or strike you with the claw fish it will hurt like you never been on earth LOL

  • 1:08 lolz you cant sees me

  • No training just worked with him. And I know they have a latch that's why I didn't just pull it open. Just seeing if he wanted to show off.

  • @virtulentcorpse say cant that mantis shrimp break your aqua glass?

    i heard it can

  • You really shouldn't attempt to unwind the raptorial appendages of any stomatopod- they're kept locked in place by a little "latch" that hooks onto the upper forelimb. Attempting to force the limb like this could break the tendon "latch" that enables the mantis to keep it's appendage retracted.

  • @Greenturtlmonstr damn you know a lot

  • To answer some stuff. I work with him for bout a week before I had this confidence.

  • @virtulentcorpse nice have u traind him to not strike? i know you ment well but he was scared poor guy

  • @virtulentcorpse smart of you, heard they could be dangerous right? nice video man

  • to the as far as todays top rated comment here, with states that this guy got balls of steel and have tamed this dangerus animal....Vel...i would say , its more stupidety then balls of steel, really. Yes it is a dangerus animal, and i kid have done a bit of harm to his fingers, if it feldt threthend. I would not agree that the animal seems tamed, it mite yust be an none/agressive induvidual, given thise is sayd to have personaleties to some extend. Thats my take on it, aleaste

  • @JeromeBrass sounds like you better watch your gf. lol.

  • @JeromeBrass he's probably heterosexual, sorry bro lol.

  • Yeh.. i heard on a documentary these bad boys won't attack you unless they feel provoked.. you must have an amazing bond with ur mantis shrimp,

  • they look more like lobsters

  • I was afraid that thing was gonna blow your thumb off 3 sec into the video....

  • How long has he been familiar with you? He's feeding without even extending his raptorals. Awesome tank skills!

  • You're un ouf! How do you fait!

  • you are freaking crazy...

  • im suprised you still have your hands and even your FINGERS you are my idol.

  • You either have some balls or very ignorant, did you know that putting your fingers right in front of its mouth could've cost you to lose them?

  • no its just in this stage where if he attacks it will degrade

  • They creep me the fuck out!! Lol

  • it will die soon :-) no active... :(

  • Is she in shed, and unwilling to strike; or has she always been this tame? Did you train her; was she aggressive initially? Those bladed raptorial appendages of hers look like they could cut fingers off, sever tendons, maybe even bleed you out if they got your wrist for example... How the hell did you approach that thing when you first started picking it up, and didn't know how it would react?

  • Those things split thumbs

  • man, those thing can hit the shit out of you

  • Zebras spear correct?

  • Wow that gives "Hand feeding" a whole new definition.

  • It's so cute! I love Mantis shrimp! And no one tell me why I shouldn't think they're cute. I know pretty much everything there is to know about mantis shrimp.

  • when i first saw the tittle i was thinking "bye bye fingers" but then i watched and i got to say it was a little disappointing...

  • Spearer, not a hammer, so it didn't attack him. A less aggressive type.

  • wow... thats really the craziest thing ever. I would never dream of putting my hands near one. You have balls of steel for sure!

  • next grab a pistol shrimp!

  • @halo3trapmaster Mantis shrimp hit harder than Pistol shrimp. This guy just tamed his and I have no idea how he did that.

  • @rocafella142 i know they hit harder but it seems it would hurt more if a pistol shrimp pinched him then a mantis shrimp hitting him.

  • @halo3trapmaster oh i see what you mean. well actually no getting pinched by a pistol shrimp won't hurt very much. Pistol shrimp do damage by soundwaves and by launching bubbles not so much their pinching. Their pinches just squeezes the bubbles together and causes that reaction to occur similar to how squeezing a trigger will fire a bullet. Getting hit by a mantis shrimp on the otherhand is down right painfull. I've been hit by a smasher before i got teary eyed. a spearer would be even worse...

  • @rocafella142 actually it is like sticking your finger under the hammer of a pistol and firing, i guess in water it may not hurt so much but it will hurt somewhat.

  • @halo3trapmaster penis shrimp

  • @peinerchestical even better......

  • That was sick lol

  • like a little cute baby <3

  • are they fresh waterif so where can i get one and would it get along with my oscor fish?

  • Comment removed

  • no saltwater

  • @Neatdo dang

  • @loganandlexi1 With this questions I can already tell you that you shouldn't be owning one... No it isn't good for fresh water, no it isn't good for any fish... this is a killer... Potential damage for the size is huge... but wow, impressive to see that young guy's holding it...

  • That has got to be the stupidest thing I've ever seen someone do with a Stomatapod. That thing's normal feeding response is to lash out with claws that will go right through your hand, and you hand it food :S

  • hes a spearer so he wont really attack anything with his claws unless hes hunting or being attacked.....

  • and she is so friendly :D

  • aww you're cute :P

  • dude that thing can split your hand right open thats why they have two names mntis shrimp and thumb splitters

  • tastiest shrimp ive ever tasted. Mantis shrimp stir fried in oyster sauce and dried chilies.

  • @wanthebear u would be talking about the red hongkong mantis shrimp then

  • @Zero1RLV Sorry man i gotta agree with cpslock3... you do behave like a crazy idiot.

  • I'm surprised it didn't try to kill you.

  • Wow!

    That animal looks amazing.

  • @Zero1RLV Funny i'm keeping my cool your the one swearing and acting like a child.

  • @Zero1RLV You mad bro?

  • @Zero1RLV If this is what a "open minded", "acception", and "kind" vegan is I am glad I am a meat eater.

  • @Zero1RLV I think you ment to go to peta. No one can care less about some militant vegan. All your doing is making us mad.

  • I would be worried about getting speared like a shish kabob.

  • I wonder how it tastes.

  • sweet

  • Please answer me, how do you bond with your mantis if they flick you every time you try to "interact" with them? I would love a response, since I am in fact getting one of these.

  • @pwndog1337

You shouldn't even try. These guys can >hurt< you. They won't 'flick' you, they'll try to knock your damn finger off. XD

And you can't really 'bond' with them. If you're real lucky, it'll tolerate you, but tolerating handling and enjoying it is very different. It stresses them.

You're not supposed to touch any fish/water inverts. They're display pets.

If you want something you can handle you should actually just get a praying mantis or maybe some type of reptile.

  • To everyone whose wondering why the owner wasn't "punched", the answer is simple. He owned the mantis shrimp for a while and has always interacted with it, thereby creating a bond with his pet. She is used to being handled in such a fashion that she's totally fine with it.

Props to the owner, I loved this video. :)

  • @RavenCodeProduction Yes i agree with you.

  • @RavenCodeProduction No, sorry. You can't "bond" to an invertebrate. This one appears to be tolerating the interaction, possibly because the stress is affecting its health.

  • dominated

  • Why would you do that? I see you trying to put ur head in aligator's mouth soon...

  • You are crazy! I have way too much fear of those killing machines to every go near their front legs. They are called thumb splitters for a reason.

  • It probally just molted with makes it slower and or calmer.

  • som emo kid dosent care about his life...

  • Dude,

You got balls of steel! I can't believe you tamed that thing! That is a beautifully...dangerous creature and I have to give a thumbs up for being crazier than Steve Irwin.

  • @TypOPositiv i doubt he can tame a HAMMER mantis shrimp ~

  • @shadowfaithx

Doesn't matter. Mantis Shrimps are insane inverts to keep in a closed eccosystem. But in all honesty, I would love to see who would win between a mantis shrimp and a puffer.

  • @TypOPositiv Are they dangerous?

  • @Enski94

Well, if you provoke them, they can hurt you. A spearer could probably slice your hand open pretty easily. However, spearers are a little less aggressive, though I'm surprised at it feeding like that.

I tried to get our peacock mantis to eat a shrimp head. She politely pushed it away several times before losing her temper and striking. She's never hit me, but one time she grabbed my finger with her mouthparts and I pretty much had a heart attack.

    They're dangerous, but not mean.

  • @Enski94

Only if they feel threatened and trust me, that is VERY gutsy what he's doing. That mantis shrimp could strike with a painful sting.

  • Do you still have it? How is it doing?

  • MAN I MISSED EATING THIS WHEN I WAS IN TIANJIN CHINA.

  • @boblee666 haha i had this too in china as well. Tastes great with noodles ^_^

  • that is one very weak mantis shrimp :/

its either really sick, really stressed or really old and stressed :/

  • Let's see you do that with a Peacock Mantis. You can show us why most call them thumb splitters.

  • What an emo shrimp jesus christ

  • its so cute.

  • your stress in her

  • it's an animal. not a toy

  • kung fu lobster gone soft ??????????? i thouht it would go jet li on you

  • @Zero1RLV lol. I'm going to upload a video of me biting a mantis shrimp in half !

  • @Zero1RLV Nice generic "...people like you..." comment. You probably think you've said something deep and profound haven't you? You probably think you've said something brilliant that summed up my behavior and it's relations and impact upon the progression of the human race. Well you haven't. You don't know anything. So stop pretending and keep crying over it and go watch that famous "meet your meat" video by PETA and go die of a heart attack you brainless mistakenly philanthropic fuckhead.

  • @me700gnomes also: i hope you never get a mantis shrimp, you bastard...you'd probably maul it to death like this guy eventually will. its bad enough people keep pets in homes way to small. you all get pissed about dolphins and whales being stuck at places like marine land, or oilspills that ruin such beautiful ocean life, yet ye be hypocrites to the poor mantis shrimp and other sea animals alike. how unthankful, how low.

  • @Zero1RLV WAAAAAAAAH that poor shrimp. who the fuck cares. listen to yourself.

  • @Zero1RLV NOOOO YOU!

  • spearing mantis like L. maculata CANNOT break your finger, OR glass. They do not have the Mass necessary to create enough force to break anything really. At worst it will slice you open. There are only 2 species out of the 250+ species that can break aquarium glass, and that is only very large, full grown smashers.

    Take a chill pill.

  • @christofficer3 yes it can here is a link to a dude ho lost his tank to a mantis: akvariefisk.dk/forum/thread/?ID=991207

    pictures and all

in case you whant the site translatet the langueis is danish

  • @MrNatureCalls where does it say anywhere in that page what species of mantis it is? he said he always wanted to keep one but now he will skip it, meaning he didnt even know he had one. Thus it came in the live rock, meaning it was a smasher not a spearer. spearing mantis only live in deep sand beds, not in rocks. smashers (only a half dozen LARGE species) are the only kind of mantis that can brake glass. period. end of discussion.

  • @Zero1RLV shut up

  • @virtulentcorpse is he friendly?

  • Man these are SO COOL!!! I want one!!

  • COOOOOOOL! Hey can mantis shrimp generally be kept with coral? Cuz I know yours is certainly not the average mantis.

  • I was holding my breath the hole time watching this.

  • Aw, he's a lovely Zebra mantis shrimp, and a nice one.

Usually Mantis Shrimp owners who put their hand in front of a mantis shrimp would get "hammered" by their large folded claws.

  • WTF!

    You sir have balls.

  • the matis shrimps is sick

  • how is it not takeing his finger off

  • the back gound noise is huge filter done.

  • Is it about to molt?

  • Aw, he's so cute!

  • when the crab hits u u lose ur hand xD

  • Beautiful animal, but what's that deafening background noise? I had to turn the audio off.

  • she must be nice ROFL XD

  • I see a lot of people confusing velocity with force and while velocity*mass=force Its just not that simple! There are two other major factors that come into play. First is the shape of a .22 round as in its rounded nose. Second would be the properties of lead. As in the second that .22 round strikes its target it starts to mushroom. After taking both factors into consideration while looking at the shape and size of the stabbing mantis you can conclude the mantis hits with a greater PSI then a 22

  • @MGarafano Well technically is acceleration (Force=MA)

  • Everyone claiming it must be sick or it just got done molting is wrong. Obviously this is not a new pet! The Mantis is the smartest (by far) Stomatopod there is. (They also great vision too) They not only can tell the difference between their master and a stranger but they can tell the difference as soon as you walk into the room. If its looking your way that is! My friend has a blue ringed octopus and it can be deadly but its so docile he hand feeds it. No real risk once they recognize you!

  • By the way- you can't pull the arms out because they're secured with a little strand of sinew, kind of like a latched door. Pulling on them could break the "saddle" muscle that holds the arm in place.

  • Is this the stabbing variety of stomatopod? The raptorial appendages don't look like they're built for smashing

  • beutifull creature! and it doesnt attack you... amazing.

  • oh my Fucking! shit!!!!!!!

  • hand feeding a mantis shrimp now ive seen everything

  • @NanoSnax Ive read of a lot of people that do this. Once you feed em enough they will recognize you as their master from across the room they are highly intelligent and have a set of complex eyes witch offer excellent vision! They can tell the difference between 2 males the same build standing 10-15 feet away! Besides why would it want to take off the hand that so delicately feeds it everyday! I have a friend that hand feeds his blue-ringed octopus and that thing packs far more of a punch!

  • @MGarafano ok, blue rings should only be kept by EXPERIENCED aquarists, bot saying your friend isn't experienced, but blue rings have a lethal venowm with no antidote. he/she should keep it only if they want to study it, bot prove they've got guts or anything. just be careful around them.

  • at 0:06 you said come here girl, yet your description clearly states he and him

    MAKE UP YOUR MIND

  • How bad would it hurt if it punches you
