The low notes in the opening riff also could be from the then brand-new Universe 7 string he was playing (count the tuners on the cover!) with a low B, and/or the Eventide Ultra Harmonizer effect unit. At the time, they were the cool (and expensive) new pieces of gear that he showcased on the record, and nobody else at the time used them. Actually, I think he designed the Universe as well.

Either way, one of his best tunes IMHO.
