Yes, certainly. 'Dead Souls' by Nikolai Gogol. Any by Fyodor Dostoevsky. 'The Master and Margarita', by Mikhail Bulgakov is very Russian, but also highly readable and would be a good starting place. Other great Russian authors are Pushkin, Tolstoy, and many more! This country has an amazing literary tradition of examining, unflinchingly, the human condition, death, God, society, etc.

Agreeing with Newman, I would still recommend Solsjenitsyns 'The first circle', 'Cancer clinic' and especially 'One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich' as important books. However, the best read on the past USSR penal system in my oppinion is Varlam Shalamov 'Kolyma tales'.
