i have a WWII era springfield, bought for around 675$ if i can remember. ive put many many rounds through it since ive had it, and it was one of the best rifles i have ever had the pleasure of shooting.
Personal opinion, CMP is a bunch of F-ing bullshit. We don't have classes of Americans. We left "clicks" behind in high school. Just buy a M1 from a private party. It's even worth paying one or two hundred more just to by pass BS class rules. Like I said though, it is my personal opinion
@hamcheesesalami - its the tracking number the government uses on guns. like a VIN on a car. Your legal ownership can be challenged via the serial number. PLUS There are super secret orbiting government satellites snapping hi rez pictures of your guns every time you leave the house, collecting all the serial number info and storing it on the international space station! COVER THOSE SERIAL NUMBERS PEOPLE, OR WRAP THE GUNS IN ALUMINUM FOIL WHEN YOU LEAVE THE HOUSE!!
@jigglejack100 Yeah, and show proof of being in a shooting club, or assosiation prior to joining CMP, too many hoops for me, I just went to the local gun shop around the corner and picked up my Garand, a few hundred rounds of ammo, and went home, done in less than 45 minutes......of course that was in 1984
@GlocksInABox - Garands were manufactured by 4 companies over the years, and I wanted 1 from each company. Springfield Armory, Winchesters, International Harvester Corp, and Harrington & Richardson. Collectors get like that... gotta have 1 example of each, were kinda obsessive.
@FrenziedCalm If so, You might want to check GunBroker or around for a Garand made by Beretta or Breda. They made somewhere over 100,000 during the 50's (using mostly equipment bought from Winchester) before retooling the machines to make their BM59 rifles. They are supposed to have the highest general quality among all the brands because they spent most of their time sitting packaged in Italian and Danish armories before finding their way to the US.
@wwood14 - The Winchester definitely has the roughest machining and finish. I also have a WWII era Springfield Armory that was machined a bit rough. I have a Korean era Springfield that looks great. The H&R is my personal favorite, lovely! IHC is good too. You want a historic collectable with a story and care not about machining, get a WWII piece. Want a shooter, thats a beauty inside and out, get a Korean era M1! If I had to choose I'd keep the H&R and dump the rest.
@RecycledTrashHole Yeah we are, the only bumps in the road for us though is Obama, and a few corrupt polititians, but we'll iron them out nice and smooth in 2012 :)
So would you recommend the H&R over the Springfield? Also are the ones you show service grade? I think I'm going to get a service grade H&R, I don't really care for WW2 or anything just the condition of the rifle. How long did it to deliver from the time you sent in your papers? Thanks
@mattamiller I got a service grade from the CMP a few years back and it was a lot nicer than expected for the price. With this grade some of the parts didn't match BUT everything there was in nice shape. I got a Springfield but H&R would be a good choice as it didn't come out until the Korean War, so one less conflict for it to get knocked around in.
My understanding is that the CMP is no longer run by the fed, it's an independent 501(c)3 charter corporation...so seeing the higher prices isn't too surprising. I spoke at length with one of the old hands at Century Arms and he basically confirmed for me why the prices are so jacked-up now, and it's mainly because of the changeover to a corporation. One instance where maybe having it govt. run would have be cheaper for consumer (but again, a higher risk to be shut down too).
When that whacko went nuts and killed his family in Kentucky a few years ago, he used an M1 Garand, and CNN and all the other idiots were calling it an "assault rifle"... idiots... one of these days the liberals are going to pull the plug on the CMP based on this kind of stuff. Be sure and get yours before that happens people!
@nialld1990 Thanks! I also have a small collection of 1895 Loewe Mausers that went to Chile, in 7x57. Those are also great old rifles, and have an interesting history here in the United States, having been butchered and sold at Sears and Montgomery Ward as dirt cheap "deer rifles"... My dad picked up one of them in the 1960s, still have it. Have a few Swede 1896 Mausers in 6.5x55 as well... If you can't tell, I really like the pre-1898 Mausers. I'll post some vids of them sometime as well.
@bigbubba5037 I highly recommend them! And getting them through the CMP cuts the price considerably... a good 1/3rd to 1/2 off what you'd otherwise pay usually.
I hope to get one of these eventually. It's hard to resist for anyone that's at all interested in firearms and/or history, both of which I'm quite the fan of. I'm hoping the supply doesn't dry up for at least a little while, but it's getting closer to that point every day unfortunately. I'm a poor college student at this point in time, but I just finished school so hopefully I can save up some money and pick one up before too long. Thanks for sharing.
@wcropp1 I've been hearing "their about to run out" literally for 30 years... "they" were saying that in the early 1980s!! "They" being the folks selling the M1 Garands for $1200 of course, and discouraging you from buying the "junk" the CMP sells you "these days"... LOL... I'd be more worried about Obama or the next president pulling the plug on funding (or just on general principal of the government arming its own citizens with "assault rifles") than them running completely out.
@FrenziedCalm Well that's good to hear...maybe I will get one at some point? IIRC, I think the supplies were getting kinda low before the big Greek shipment came in? Seems every time they're "running out," some get "discovered" somewhere else? I don't know, all I know is that I want one. I hear you on the whole "president pulling the plug" thing. That's basically why I don't have one yet. Been buying "evil black rifles" out of fear I won't be able to anymore before long. Hopefully we're wrong.
I heard that the cmp id not refurbishing them anymore? Do you think I could still be able to get one?

Buying a M1 Garand form C.M.P.
1. You have to join a local gun club in your State. The NRA does NOT count!
2.You must pass a gun safety class by having a club official
sign a C.M.P. gun safety form.
3. You must fill out 3 other forms from the C.M.P.
Note the gun club you join MUST be affiliated with C.M.P. or they will
tell you to have them fill out a form to join C.M.P.
