It is a knife that is being used in a way I hope you never will. NEVER cut towards your body. At different points in tha vidoe if the knife had slipped it would have gone into his leg or his hand or removed part of a finger. I learned his when I was 8 (I cut off the end of my thumb - they sowed it back on; but it's a lovely scar to remind me).
Please people - when using tools, always SAFETY FIRST!. (How does one become qualified as a Treewright anyway?)
Where I come from in the Appalachian Mountains, these were called Gee Haw Whimmy (sometimes whimsy) Diddles. Gee being turning right, haw left. Thanks for bringing back a childhood memory. And yes, I could make it turn either direction.
Nice video, but if you start the notches about 2 & 1/2 to 3 inches from the propeller end, it will work better. It works on vibration, & there is not enough room on yours before the propeller to make enough vibration. Just a helpful thought from a fellow whittler. These are lots of fun though!
Few scary cuts with that uber sharp knife though.... I think I'll rest the wood on a log or such when cutting the notches and shave the twig away both times!
Not everyone is good with a knife.... And even those who are slip occasionally!
my grandad usef to those me 50 years when i was boy in west Texas.

Yes there's a bit of a secret to making it go in both directions. I tell the kids that they have to think 'pure' thoughts !
