ketchup is fine to use. when I was about 14, I learned how to make this at a youth church activity. my leader had us squeeze in a generous portion of ketchup. I think the neat thing about this recipe is that it is tasty no matter what you have or don't have on hand. thanks for posting it.

i dont have tomatoes, or tomatoe sauce. can i use ketchup? i have no money. i have ground beef, potatoes and onions. so im wondering if ketchup would be to weird? and in the future would buying a really big jar of spaghetti sauce would be cheaper than buy cans of tomatoe sauce? sorry trying to cook on a very small budget. Thank you so much for this recipe.

@AliceCooks I never used ketchup. I find that tomato sauce is a lot cheaper than spaghetti sauce especially if you by the store brand. you can probably cut down the amount of tomato sauce I just like the flavor of 2 opposed to 1 can. it's kind of a throw together recipe it would probably be ok without tomato sauce.

This is exactly my stew recipe except I use stewing beef instead of the hamburger.This would be faster!

I never thought to add tomatoes to my regular stew I am gonna have to try that next time.

I don't see why you couldn't. Might be a little too salty though... Lately I have been making this with macaroni noodles or shells instead of potatoes. It's really good.

My friend Lisa used to make this all the time, and I agree with you--this is REALLY good and it goes a LONG way and is really nice for cold nights as well :)
