My dad told me, that when this album came out, he bought it. He had never heard anything like that bass. It was really kind of a shock to him. So he decided to listen to the record, till the record was scratched to death. He's also the one who told me about Jaco and jaco has been my favorite musician since.
Her music transcends generations. It was appropriate for my generation (hippie baby boomer), but is also relevant and appropriate for this generation, and others after it, I think. It is futuristic music. Let's go back to the future, so to speak.
Love this song, this album, which I consider her best, but boy what a pretentious bore! I couldn't listen to the full interview she gave for the BBC and I'm a huge fan! It's no wonder she was always writing about failed relationships and no wedding bells ringing.
Larry Carlton, Joni and Jaco all doing what they are famous for! You couldn't buy that talent. How much would the budget be for an album if you wanted to feature these three on your album?
@candelise I'm a bass player, so I notice and study such things. Jaco is probably my main influence on my individual playing style. I've noticed when I improvise that it starts to sound a bit like his music. But after 31 years of playing bass and studying Jaco, I guess I couldn't help that.
@GodslaveRocks That is understandable, although, hopefully, there is more of yourself than Jaco in your style as we all want to rise on our individuality, right? As for this track, I feel that it is a classic example of each players' equal importance. I say this'cause there is a LOT of Jaco love expressed for this track, it seems. Jonis' driving riff and rythmic style is as vital as Carltons' impressionistic leads AND Jacos' unmistakable sound. I'm a piano player, by the way, Hello.
@candelise Of course there's more of me, because I draw off all influences and experiences, as all serious musicians do. But there are times that I play a pattern and think, "Hey! That sounded like something Jaco would have played there!"
Hey there, blackkendoll82, I was wondering if you could answer a question for me. How come some of the tunes on this CD are blocked from uploading while others, like Black Crow aren't? I did a vid with the song, Hejira, last night, and it's blocked worldwide!! WMG is truly evil!! LOL But seriously, it's so annoying when you spend so much time doing a creative video & then you find out that it cannot be shown.
Jaco's bass WAS incredible, but Joni's guitar doesn't slouch either ; it's their unique interplay that makes Hejira her most extraordinary album musically. Nothing like it before or since...not even from HER!!!!
I was so lucky to have seen Joni Mitchell live 2x. Once after Court & Spark and again when she toured after this album. Jaco knocked me out of my socks, he was so good, and beautiful (RIP). Thank God, or whoever, for Joni Mitchell.
oh thanx for uploading!! joni mitchel is the ultimate musician singer!!!! lasted in time and will always be THE inspiration for all artists around the world!!!!
@stavrosyagulis would have liked to have heard her do some songs with jack bruce, this song reminds me of rope ladder to the moon from songs for a tailor, check it out
See my tribute at (pyrography/burning bridge) decem10ber Roberta Joan is what I call her. She is a muscular phenomenon that will live as long as man kind.
@Souperlative Dude, I think those are actual, not false harmonics. Hate to be a know-it-all, but the intro to "Birdland" from Weather Report, is an example of false harmonics. On this song"Black Crow" he uses harmonics in chords! and kicks ass! Can't forget that! Definitely my favorite Joni song. I got busted by hot chics singing this in my car ! I didn't even care!
@ToneTranquilo Hey lol i was just correcting the spelling of mister Q2w3e4r5tss
--->"False harmonies" to "False harmonics" . You are right about this song and about Birdland, good examples of false harmonics can be seen as well in his video where he teaches bass and how he does these trick :)
So incredibly Funky!! I wanna fly fast like the wind above the highway with the black crow....Jaco!! the master who defined it!! we miss you still, but thank you for gracing us with your presence....
Fabulous, fabulous...I was 17 when I first listened to her...and ever since I have loved most of her songs...

This is one of the best produced albums ever cut. Best song lyrics. Really great music.
The bass line on this alone is worth the price of admission.

No mistaking the late great Jaco Pastorius. The double-stops, conga-style rhythms and harmonics defined the author of modern electric bass.
