  • I can't believe how sad this is. I just imagine his mother, of all people, finding him dead on his bed. It just plain old doesn't get sadder than that...I feel for this entire family. This is a pure tragedy. If he had the slightest idea of how popular he would eventually become, he wouldn't have taken his life.

  • The ending had me in tears. So nice to see the family all together happy and joyful and little nick with a great big smile on his face like all babies. Why do we have to grow up and become depressed? At least we know what nick looked like when he smiled.

  • one of the most excellent documentaries i know.

  • in a dream i was talking with Elliott Smith, I was trying to talk about Nick Drake and he had no idea who i was talking about. I wanted so badly to try and make him remember, but i decided that things were for the best and changed the subject...

  • Thanks so much for uploading this video. What an amazing musician, I wish he was still around to see the impact his music has had on everyone, including me.

  • long live the wonderful musical soul of Nicholas Drake

  • wow.. beautiful film !! I pretty much knew most of what was in the film, but it was

a wonderful experience nonetheless. Nick was a once in a lifetime artist.. what a

shame he was taken from us far too soon. What a pity he could not have gotten

better care. One wonders how he might have faired had he been going through

his depression in the modern era- if a better anti-depressant might have made

    a difference.

Thanks for posting this, Mr Snow !!!

  • buddyjesus

get a life, grow a brain, and just fuck off.

  • @buddyjesus1000 Thats very ignorant to say about her. i would appreciate it if you wouldnt say such horrid things about her. :(

  • @suicidalquiff dont think you know the definition of ignorant mate lol and i stand by what i said

ps bet shes got great tits too yum ;p

  • @buddyjesus1000 You are a pathetic excuse for a human being. One can only hope your Di*% falls

    off, and soon.

  • @timjmoran too late lol

  • "Brighten my Northern Sky...." Thanks, Nick Drake from a Canadian fan.

  • Excellent documentary, just watched the whole thing this morning, last part moved me to tears.

  • I love his music and have just bought everything he he did. Seems he had a very tragic death and I know that depression is not a personal choice.

  • could someone please tell me what does the audio tape of him talking is saying? i couldn't understand it all...

  • @marisuarez88 it sounds like "I'm afraid today, at this stage, my voice has begun to fail me rather badly, I'll just do one more song"

  • Dig the "What the hell" shoulder shrug at 8:25...Great stuff.

  • Great

  • Thanks for posting this doco allowing us to see into his world a bit more. What a tragic end for such a sensitive and talented young man. The complications of the creative mind eh? :-( Thanks for the music Nick :-) x Milk and honey where they lie x

  • Thank goodness for Nicks sister! What a wonderful insight into a man that we really didn't know before. I am glad she shared that all with us. Joe Boyd as well. Thanks for posting this sunshine. :)

  • I don't think Nick was autistic or anything like that. His songs are too introspective to think of that.

He was just a man who couldn't deal with life.

Who can blame him for that?

  • I have really enjoyed this documentary. I've been watching it with my mother and we're both musicians with past depressional problems, Nick's music has really affected our lifes as musicians and about the troubles we've had too. I think of Nick almost every day. I believe that taking his childhood into consideration, he wasn't just an introverted genius, and I mean this respectfully, I think he was mildly autistic. He has a lot of traits of autism. I wonder why no one has picked up on this.

  • "I think he was mildly autistic."

No, you sadly miss; yet, hit him much like a ship, a tanker would, perhaps, shrouded in a mist with pram at your bow?

  • @brainiacbelle When he was in the hospital I'm sure they had the ability to pick up on something like that.

  • Excellent documentary.

It's hardly believable there was so much indifference to his taking all those dangerous prescription drugs, given his emotional state.

My impression from these accounts is that Nick was "written off" by the family early on as odd and moody, rather than appreciated for the highly sensitive and remarkable talent he was. No offense intended, just my two bits.

Nick's music will live on and on. The rest will be forgotten.

  • thanks for posting this :)

  • superb documentary

  • "straight in my new minds eye"... how could he not see the beauty in his own music? It's tragic. Such a gift to humanity Nick has given through his music. That is how he lives on, in our experience of it. Thanks Nick

  • Nick never had a romantic relationship?

  • i think theres a moral: dont worry about seeeing success, just enjoy the moment, because your work in this lifetime might help others in another lifetime

  • I think this is very true. Very nice insight.

  • Thank you for understanding :)

  • wtf

  • i dont think nick killed himself simply because he didnt find the success he was looking for. his song "time has told me" reveals to me that he had a view of life that runs contrary to hanging your enjoyment of life on a contingency such as fame and success. it was probably something else that led him to his sad end and interim suffering.

  • You're probably be right, but none of us will ever know, we can only assume.

I didn't necessarily mean success = fame. Success could mean anything. I just wanted to highlight the "it's the journey not the destination", kind of belief

  • @poxy84 Yeah and it's called chronic depression oh and another thing it doesn't go away. I would know. You don't need a reason to be depressed, it's engraved in your soul all you can do is pop pills and hope one day you wake up and can enjoy at least 2 seconds out of the given day.

  • I can imagine how alone he'd feel, being depressed in an upper class neighborhood, friends with ppl at cambridge, not many interested in the true beauty of life... of course, i'm just stereotyping, but that kind of lifestyle wouldve impacted me, too

  • That last line Gabrielle speaks, "If only I could feel that my music had ever done anything to help one single person, it would have made it worth it", makes me cry every time. Mission accomplished, Mr. Drake.

  • tyvm for posting - this was really wonderful.

  • I have come to appreciate this music through the things I suffer.

Really the most sincere and transparent musician of all-time.

It is real music with all the props removed... pure and vulnerable.

  • I haven't cried in ages. Well that did it. Thanks for posting the videos. And thankyou Nick for your music x

  • nick will always be alive. his music is alive and well. it will always be. there isnt a better example of what makes us human than his music. its so honest, and just incredible. there will never be another nick.

  • kisses for Nick.. this was beautiful. Thank you for posting this.

  • A very good documentary - thanks for taking the time to upload it.

  • It must be incredibly painful for the people around someone so ill with depression or whatever was causing him such pain (will we ever know?) to not know how to help - it was as if his friends and family just had to stand back and watch him being buried alive

Sad that he was so amazingly gifted but the film brought home to me the sadness of any death from being too sensitive

One of Nick Drake's many contributions is that he spoke for all of the people who are beyond reach

  • what a great comment.

    (:

  • I second that. Brilliant comment :)

  • I love it.

I was crying at the end.

Nick Drake is one of those people that you wish you could've met and when u try to "go in his skin and walk in his shoes" you realize how many other people are just like him sadly. He repersents so many unforgetable things I am so sad he did not live to see all the people he made happier by his music.

  • I should refrain from reading these comments..because it once again makes me realize how many, shallow, moronic, and distasteful souls are walking the planet...and sadly have computers. If you must type stupid, rude comments (9 times out of 10 misspelled)...save it for the porn sites. Truly disturbing to those of us who really are interested in these posts. Really...get a life.

  • This is a wonderfully done documentery. It really presented the soul of Nick Drake rather well. THere are those of this world that just don't fit. Because he couldn't he had to leave, but left us with something extraordinary.

  • A sensative soul, hopefully some of the people who have posted on here, will never have any dark moments, sadly some people do. Nicks music does make a difference. Boring cunt??You really dont get it 70 mack, then again you were never ment too were you!!!See you on the other side Nick, rip sunshine.

  • You are a joke. Nick Drake is amazing.

  • i wouldn't call different and talented slow. I think you don't understand he was trying to be more than just another jerk.

  • Beautiful, bu tradgic. I love him and his music. God bless you Nick x x x x

  • I have to say that I am convinced that he was taking and addicted opiates. I know I'll get a 1000 thumbs down for saying that, but let's just say I've seen how those things destroy people and Nicks story is a mirror image of people that I have known, and who are also no longe here.

  • interesting theory..

  • Well, drugs destroy people chemically, but life destroys people MENTALLY and leads them to take drugs, so, it's chicken and egg thing again. Eitherway, another soul is gone.

  • Thanks Nick, you brightened my morning skies from now on!

  • A great documentary of nick drake.

    simply great.

  • Nice. Well done.

  • Man that was so moving. Thank you for posting this.

  • Leaving those home movies - the only film of him - to the very end was masterful, emotional documentary making.

  • I agree. Wasn't the whole thing almost like a movie? only done far better than if Hollywood would get hold of it. Beautiful and tenderly done i think. No attempt to 'sex' things up and make it more than it was. Just purely, surely, the Drakes.

  • i absolutely cried, cried, cried.

i never even knew who he was, but i grew up with his music and recently rediscovered it. and thank you for posting this.

  • Fantastic. Thanks for this.

  • That was really good.

  • A brilliant documentary! The home movies radiate the kind of perfect childhood happiness that at the time feels like it's never going to end. It only increases the pain of knowing that Nick became so aware of the black-eyed dog so soon.

  • clinical depression i mean

  • depression is a chemical imbalance in your brain, nothing to do with rich, poor, nerdy, popular, abused, etc.

  • Oh fuck it's not always a chemical imbalance. That's bullshit.

  • I would agree wholeheartedly except for the fact that I have grown up in around those very close to me experiencing great depression that didn't always exist. It comes from somewhere. It has to have a great deal to do with environment. Granted to some degree you do have a choice on how you handle depression. Those who excuse away depression as a chemical imbalance lack the vocabulary to define it. Nick Drake as the documentary implies didn't develope that thick skin required.Wish I had known him

  • Thanks, sunshineonsnow.

What on earth does miledavisblackmx5 think he's talking about? Sunshine's right - depression has nothing to do with whether one has had a privileged upbringing or not.

  • I would appreciate it if people didn't play out their silly and inane arguments on this channel, and keep comments to the point, ie. the wonderful Nick Drake and his wonderful music.. thanks :)

  • @sunshineonsnow Amen.

  • @sunshineonsnow u can change your settings on each vid so u can approve or disapprove of comments .... :)

  • Doesn't the fact that he wrote special music -from the bottom of his heart- MAKE him a special person? In a way, the music you make reflects what you are and what you think, how you feel. You can't really imagine a shallow person when hearing the depth of his music...

The beauty of his music reflects the beauty of his person. Where would he get the mood and depth from otherwise?

I can't really imagine him writing 'Way To Blue', and going to the dance club after that...

  • well said!!

  • It is almost as if you're trying to say that you have one up on Nick Drake's life making his music irrelevant and his overall demeanor whiny and bratty and your pains justifiable to moan about on the internet such as you just did.

It's not less different or poetic than Nick Drake's music. I'm sorry to hear of your troubled child hood. We all experience hardships in varying intensities, but no matter how little it may be and how happy you ought to be, doesn't make pain go away. rich or poor.

  • I'm in complete tears, jeez, it's something..

'If only i could feel that my music could ever have done anything to help one single person, it would have made worth it'..

This is so horrible to hear...Lots of artists have died young, but there was something around most of them; people, success, whatever: a connection to the world..

Nick's life seems to have been such a lonely, bleak life, all the time, it kills me..It's so horrible, how life can be unfair to such precious people like Nick was..

  • Wow that was really moving. The part at the end with the home movies really was great to see.

I sure am touched by his music because he really is an original to be cherished.

There will never be another ;).

  • beautifully done. wonderful music. deeply sensitve, artistic guy. what a price to pay, but what a gift to give. enjoy it.

  • What a silly bunt.

  • depression has absolutely nothing to do with a lack of backbone or character

not everyone who comes from a weatlhy background is spoilt

wealth has little to do with mental health

if nick's music was special, then he was special

    thumbs down indeed!!

  • You have a point, but I like his music.

  • @milesdavisblackmx5 You sir are a dumbass troll.

  • @milesdavisblackmx5 MORON . POP PSYCH IS FOR ZOMBIES

  • @milesdavisblackmx5 You are quite possibly... THE biggest cunt I have ever seen on YouTube. And Fuck, I've seen my share.

  • Just been introduced to Nick Drakes music by a friend (thanks brooke)....i just love it. Has a beautiful melancholy about his voice and guitar, really quite unique. A sad story but glad i have heard it..i bet he always felt on the outside looking in.

  • I remember many years ago being in a record shop and hearing "thoughts of mary jane" and being so incredibly touched, I just had to buy the album. So sad and yet...

  • I know from personal experiences how distressing those feelings are, but whenever I listen to his music and I know how he was, I cant help but feel an incredible calm, it really is amazing.

  • I know exactly what you mean. Only his music can tame the insanity that is my life.

  • Most performrs I know do turn to pharmaceuticals, legal or otherwise, to acquire the (skin) required to get up on stage and deliver. Believe me, performance does not come natural to all, and musical talent does not walk hand in hand with the ability to get on stage! I wish nick could have viewed his audience with just enough contempt as to protect his sensitive spirit, maybe then he would be here to see how much we love and appreciate what he has done.

  • 'On a deep level you knew what it was about'... sister! His family were cold you didn't know deep! Too late to re-write the story now!

  • So, so very sad.

  • Great soul, great artist. His music his timeless.

  • Don't worry Nick, it was worth it! people are still discovering you everyday, lucky us huh?

    God bless.

  • I don't think this documentary really explained what happened to Nick Drake, or why he was the kind of troubled person he was. Maybe one is meant to read between the lines, I dont know. Did he have no relationships of a close personal nature? No former lovers are interviewed or even mentioned. Was it as simple as that?

  • I think, rather than include pat psychological musings, the documentary takes an expressionistic approach that honours the impenetrability of any human life. In place of definitive answers or insights, the film offers us moments within the world Drake inhabited, time with the family that surrounded him, and the music he created. Importantly, Nick's vocals are isolated on the soundtrack - suggesting that whilst he certainly was of the world he inhabited, he was also desperately estranged from it.

  • there is a great biography of nick called 'darker than the deepest sea' which you might want to check out if you want to know more about him :)

  • As far as anyone knows Nick never was involved in any close romantic relationships.

  • you should read the things that are written about him on wikipedia. also, the poem his mother wrote about him is very accurate at discribing of how his mind worked at the end. try and understand how hard it must be to have nothing to live for.

  • Gabrielle Drake is such a beautiful person too.I love the way she talks with such understated warmth.

The beauty and subtlety of Nicks music is in such sharp contrast to the brutal, crushing meaninglessness of modern culture.

No wonder his art is such a refuge for so many sensitive people..

  • i started listening to nick about a year ago and one day i was reading a the lyric sheets from one of my favorite bands called BANE. BANE is a hardcore punk rock band from boston. Anyways i noticed the lyric "you can take a road that will take you to the stars now, i can take a road that will see me through". I just think its great that a band on the complete opposite of the musical spectrum has been touched by nicks words enough to use them in their own music. it makes me happy to think of it

  • Many thanks for posting this video. Very moving and tastefully done. I've been a big fan of Nick's music for many years. He was a unique soul with an immense amount of talent for making incredibly beautiful music. Sad that he died before he knew what kind of impact he made on people.

  • So many artists died around the age Nick Drake did, Jimi, Brian Jones, Kurt, Janis, almost at the pinnacle of their achievements.

  • Nick - have been listening to your music for 30 years and it's tenderness has always helped me. And on and on and on we go.

  • I find it amazingly uplifting how his sister can remain so strong while discussing what she thinks was going through his mind in the last few hours of his life. So sad.

  • a man before his time, unfortunately.

  • I'm a believer that there are no coincidents in life, that everything happens for a reason. Both Heath and Nick seemed to get at heart of life through their art. Heath wanted to do a movie about Nick. Producers were pointing at him to do Michael Huchensons (INXS) story. I find it ironic that he died on Michael's birthday. Some say all things in life are strung together by a fragile thread....

  • nick drake a new approach of music and he showed me a wonderlful is playing witha an acoustic guitar

  • Amazing. The exterior shots are masterful. The insight into Drake's life was very sad. He was very talented, it's great that he has the recognition he does now. Too bad it didn't happen while he was alive. When was this docu made?

  • The Docu is great! Heath Ledger Idolized this man. Its funny how he was taking sleeping pills when he died--so was heath! Two great Artist--The Good Die Young!

  • What a fantastic documentary. Beautifully filmed and deeply moving. I love Nick Drake's music all the more now. Thank you for sharing it.

  • such a soft enigma for such a tormented soul...

This is a fitting tribute, beautifully moving..thank you for sharing.

  • great documentary! the cinematography is brilliant and very fitting to the mood of the songs. it's a very emotional story. nick drake is a great poet and musician!

  • I don't understand how I only found out about Nick around 2 years ago. I fell in love with the track Time has told me .............

Thanks for posting this, it was perfect,

  • Nick's music is the first in 30 years that's made me shut up, listen, and I mean really listen.

Sincerest thanks to Nick's family and filmmaker for this deeply-loving testament to his talent, heart and unfairly-brief life.

The internal agony he suffered for so long, pain that all the love, medicine or money in the world could not heal, is a human condition without mercy and deserves more intense research for treatment.

Nick's legacy is a gift that must be shared with the world.

  • thank you.

  • thanks a lot for posting this. it's one of the few times a movie has actually made me feel such sadness, but it's a sadness that will provoke positivity. nick would definitely be pleased to see how much his music has done since it's creation.

  • "When you have the very great fortune to come from a very loving family the price you have to pay for that good fortune is the death of the people in that family, that's a tragedy which is always there. It chances your live forever but you grow around it". That's so beautiful and so true...I will never ever forget this quote. His sister is so genuine, very touching..

  • it was all OK until last 15 sec. i couldn't help crying then.

  • real sad stuff.. such a pitty he couldnt see how much his music is loved now.

  • Very emotional. Thanks for posting.

  • What a brilliant documentary. Thanks for posting it.

  • Wonderful documentary for a truly talented singer and songwriter. Thanks so much for posting this...any chance of buying this on dvd.

  • thank you

I agree with the majority of the people who posted a comment

    Drake is sublime

  • wow-wow-wow

    great, so well done.

    oxoo tommy

  • Beautiful music and songwriting. I've only recently began to realise the impact of Nick Drakes music, and that impact is comparable to an asteroid that plunges into earth and changes life forever. His talent is sadly gone but will never forgotten.

  • Oh i just cried and cried watching this. Poor, poor nick. What a beautiful person/musician.

  • interesting documentary. however, the last part with the footage of him as a child was not necessary in my opinion. I think nick's music displays a wonderful balance between lyricism and restraint, and this kind of overly sentimental association sort of spoils that balance.

  • The imprint of where he grew up is so evident in his music more so than any other artist. You always get a mental image of places, etc when you listen to great music. Then to see here that the images ive had were so close to the real landscape and mood, thats when you know he was so gifted.Perfect.

  • i was driving this weekend and i stoped to get gas at this little gas station in this little town in georgia,i was waiting in line i was looking through the collection of about 15 cd's which was mostly garth brooks and blue collar comedy cds i found five leaves left, the only drake cd i didnt have and i looked for it everytime i went in a music store.i freaked out in front of everone,i just thought out of all the places,i listened to eat for the rest of my 7 hour trip,an awesome find i thought

  • Ha! That's a great story... seems like Nick was looking for you. :-)

  • Nick's Music has been both a part of and has influenced my life for over thirty years. He was a modern day Mozart. His words softly brush the strings of my heart and his life story reminds me that we all have a special unique gift and a responsibility to share it. Contrary to his eroneous belief at the time, his life has been a resounding (Re-sounding) Success.

  • Thank you, what a fantastic documentary on a fantastic artist.

  • best lyricist I know of - equal to john and paul and simon and garfunkle.....equal definitely - and perhaps even MORE sensative then the others ive mensioned

  • im a huge beatles fan, but hes a way better lyrict/composer

  • he has lit my northern sky..thanks nick..X

  • I'm glad his music didn't die with him. his spirit lives on thru his songs. I feel deeply touched. thank you I am grateful to have seen this documentary!

  • i am an amateur film maker and writer and am writing a screen play on the life a times of nick drake.. anyone that can help or contribute would be greatly appreciated.. thank you..

  • yes thanks. and thanks to nick drake.

  • Thanks

  • oh boy! cant stop crying.how sad!

  • What beautiful music.

  • This film visually captures the gorgeousness of the physical landscape reflected in his songs. Thank you so much to Gabrielle and Joe too.

  • just tears

  • I'm 54.I'm argentine. I heard his music because my daugther loves him. Listening his songs and looking at this videos I cried. Thank you for posting. Beautiful.

  • Thank you for posting this beautiful documentary. I had read a lot about all of the anecdotes in it but it was great to see the people telling his stories with his music accompanying them. I feel his music most right now in the autumn.

  • His songs are like the pure essence of autumn: the beauty of soft sunlight shining through the foliage of trees, crisp, clear air, lofty skies and birds in flight.

I don't think anybody who has not experienced autumn could write music like this. There really is no need for images, the music just conjures them up inside of you. Truly magical.

  • Beautiful documentary and testimony of a true tragedy. Thank you for posting it.

  • A beautifully made, atmospheric film - totally appropriate I thought to Nick Drake and his music. Very moving to see him as such a happy toddler at the end. Thank you for posting.

  • Yes that was moving to see him as a toddler. I think we sould be very grateful to his family for allowing that very precious home movie footage to be used. A worthy documentary.

  • what is the first song they play in the video? thanks

  • the song is 'from the morning' - the lyrics from this song 'now we rise, and we are everywhere' are on nick's gravestone

  • Thank you very much for this wonderful documentation about Nick Drake whose melancholy touches to tears.

  • let the tears flow.. never has there been such a loss

  • Thanks so much for posting this.

  • Fitting tribute, a moving glimpse into work which obviously touched many people deeply and will continue to do so. Thanks to Richard Thompson, Chris Blackwell, Danny Thompson, Joe Boyd, Robert Kirby, John Wood, and all the other fine collaborators who helped Nick bring the music to life. It makes the world a richer place. And it's gratifying to see a glimpse of Nick's life captured on film.

  • this documentary is just brilliantly done, so quiet and tinged with melancholia. really brilliant. wow.

  • Nicely done documentary. In response to eames1280 who complained about it being "one sided" and relying "heavily on Gabrielle": Nick Drake was pretty much a loner for most of his adult life. And he died over 35 years ago. So to find even a few people who can speak with authority on this quiet figure is remarkable. The film is very well made considering that we have no decent footage of Nick performing, Nick being interviewed, or Nick in the studios.

Thank you for posting this here

  • Interesting documentary. Gave some insight into the man whom wrote such lovely, timeless music..he lives on through his music. He like many artists was a genius, and like many genious`s they proned to depression.Thank u for posting vid, watched it all!!!

  • I'm surprise they didn't used his most popular tune "Pink Moon"

  • thanks so much for posting this. was annoyed i missed it first time round. he is quintessentailly albion. like syd barrett, its the idea of what could have been had it not ended. we shd just appreciate what he left. he brightened my northen sky. cheers doc.

  • Beautiful

  • It's a nice documentary, but a bit one-sided, and too long for how much information was actually in it. It was painfully obvious that there weren't enough sources to interview, and the film relies heavily on Gabrielle. What was done with the songs was really nice though, and the cinematography was beautiful without being overwhelming.

  • Don't really know who else should have been interviewed, they have all the essentially people there.

  • thank-you so much for uploading these video's. It's very much appreciated.

  • tragically beautiful.
