My answer is English. Not because I ride English nor becasue all of my friends do,but becasue I prefer it over Western. And I have rode both so my answer is true...for me atleast.I don't want to bring any offensive things to Western riders, so I will say Western is very fun to do.I just prefer English. And I also pick English because I personally think Show Jumping, and Dressage are for me.No offense Western riders. Both bring amazing rides though! :)
2:03 it is so dangerous to have your foot like that because you never know when your horse is going to spook and your foot could get caught in the stirrup!
English, this is just my opinion, I love english and have ridden it my whole life, I love everything about it and we are not stuck up bitches. Also no offence I think western saddles are sort of ugly...
I prefer western cause it's what i grew up with. Its more comfortable, and we don't pull on the mouth as much as jumpers/dressage do so its good for the horses mouth. Saddles western saddles just slide right into place and tighten the straps and your good to ride. I use a broken bit because that's what the horse i ride likes. I like bareback also because i can jump, and do western also.
i doesnt matter if you rid english or western it all depends on the rider if they pull on the bit i will NEVER use a bit and most western people have big shanks that are the most harsh bit and it only takes a slight tug to make the horse feel pain. i ride english and i have very soft hands as long as u have control of your seat you can control the horse (mostly)
WESTERN. but not that modern day crap like barrels and poles. My horse wont step foot in an arena. Extreme Moutain ridings the way to it :) ha what can i say i force my poor horse to go down steep embankments and cross water and lunge up hills..oh how harmful. ha NOT. my horse false asleep running barrels and circles in an arena shed rather lunge up a steep mountain then that. and i get mostly comments on my light riding even though im western.Western aint bad if you know how to ride it
i ride english and i go up mountains and across bridges and streams act its so fun but i also jump and do dressage and my horses love both! because it always keeps them busy
I like both.. but if i had to pick.. i'd pick...bareback. I love that! :) you can do anything jumping and barrel racing :) its just harder and funner..
english eventing is the best! going around 3 barrels seems so boring! when i go to eventing shows i get to go out on a cross country course just me and my horse and fly over huge jumps its just the best feeling in the world! (if i remember my course, lol) and dressage and show jumping just have something about them that just is amazing :) western seems to laid back and boring... just my opinion
@kayleehone1 have you ever barreled? Barreling is about speed and control, wacthing it might not be so exiting but doing it, is. Just like a cross country is to you, so could also a cross country look boring to others :)
English.... but only because i have short lags and can reach the stirrups better. when i was 16 i out grew are kids western saddle and instead of buying a new saddle I just used what was in the tack room that I could reach the stirrup on. Witch happened to be my aunts old English saddle.
Yes It got a couple of laughs when I used an English saddle to barrel race and do pole bending. but It was 4H and it was fun.
I don't know why people fight over YOUTUBE VIDS! Come on guys, we both love horses and enjoy riding! It's the same basic fundamentals. I promise, I do hunter/jumper and gymkhana because I love both for different reasons. We all have much more in common then we realize. Agreed?
I find I like English better only because from what I'v seen, Western is quite rough and tough with there horses like you don't need spurs on any horse and they seem to use harder bits too, I no English isn't always perfect but it just seems not as harsh.
at 2:03 that is NOT i repeate NOT how you keep your foot in western any person who has ever done western if you rode like that and fell you would get dragged and die
@onewillland1 Actually for Cowboy mounted shooting and Rodeo events that is how you want your stirrup. It keeps your feet in the stirrups and ass in the saddle. :)
I prefer western. Just because I like that style over english, not because I think western is better. Neither are harder then the other, because becoming very proficient in either takes time. I've been seeing a lot of people say "I like english better because the horses are more well behaved" ..Not true. It's not according to if the HORSE is trained well, but if the RIDER is trained well. Horses are animals, as many people seem to forget, and they have their bad days too.
@BaltoPrincess I don't know who the heck has been saying English horses are more better behaved, if you ask me they (at least jumpers) tend to be hotter than western horses.
i agree my horse will buck every time i canter and not a little wimpy buck
and it i didn't have my good seat and bitless bridle I'm sure he would have taken off with me every time i got on! i jump and do dressage and i say jumping is way more dangerous than going around a barrel and poles. and a lot of them are stupid cuz they WOUNT WEAR HELMETS that could SAVE THEIR LIFE!!!!!!!
Personly I find english better because the horses are much more diciplined and have more precise muscle control and the way western riders sit god know what that does for the poor horses backs :( xx
@MyStyleMySmile How does it hurt the horse's back? If you suck at riding, english or western, you can hurt them. To say all western riders are hurting their horse is untrue to a trolling degree. and just because western riders don't do dressage doesn't mean they dont have "precise muscle control". A lot of western sports have working roots that takes just as much skill.
@MyStyleMySmile oh yeah like posting and jumping and dressage doesnt hurt the horses back just beacause the saddles are heavier doesnt mean its hurts the horses back they are one ton animal i doubt a 100 pound person will phase them and what do you mean the way we sit! we sit just like you english riders do! see its times like these when english rider bring it apoun them selves (i know i spelled apoun wrong im not a goos speller)
@horseluvr63 I can't imagine posting would hurt a horse's back, versus sitting. At least when you post you're supporting your own weight half the time. And over time a western saddle will do more to a horse's back than an English saddle will.
@SilverSky333 o.k. really you think if western saddles would hurt the horse they would be made for them? and whats the difference you can post in a western saddle too!
@SilverSky333 not if its fitted correctly a english will hit just as many pressure points as westen saddles. and when u sit a trot you move with the horse not pound down on it like a fat cow. most people take my riding as though ive ridden english but ive never set a foot in english. damn miss conception..
Also, english people are NOT a bounch of stuck up presses, ok! I have met plenty of western riders that like to walk around and show off, and just as many that have been mean, rude, and snobby. I know there are nice western riders out there because my best friend happens to be one of them. I will say there are some snobby stuck up english riders too, but there are snobby stuck up riders in every discipline.
For one thing imbad1995 there are wild horses in english and we are NOT scared of them. There are plenty of wild english horses out there. I used to ride western but soon got board with it because I found it to easy. The only thing I will say is western is a lot more comfortable on trails. with english you are closer to the horse and have to have more balance. In all both are very hard disciplines to master, and I wish this fighting would just stop.
@Lexthelime just because its an olympic sport doesnt mean its better than western western is to intense for the olympics the olympics wants dainty equine riders who have there horses leap over five foot fences and have them prace around in circles!
well western is so much Better and most people don't use the horn less they dint know how to ride and for one I don't use it less I'm ropin a calf in rodeo and one english people are scared to get around wild horses I live with them
@imbad1995 i dont think that is true, english and western is just a style of riding, not a toughness competition. They both take a LOT of courage. It depends on the person, not the style.
@imbad1995 just saying i was taught to rest my hand on the horn not like use it for balance there fore im not a bad rider. i only use it when the horse i ride on my free time trots cuz he was a racer and his trot is like a gallop and if i dont hold on ill fall off lol
Western is way better than English and I think it's harder I don't really compete professionally but I do take place in a great small rodeo in GA I barrel race and pole bending and I luv it u should really try it
western is a lot harder then English iv rode both but I love western to compete western is the best cause you have rodeo and the extreme cowboy race english is for suck up preps you thing they better then anyone
@imbad1995 lol wow English is not for stuck up preps.. I ride english. I used to ride Western but when i rescued my horse I found he did not like the western saddle so i switched to english and I love it! I feel english is harder because there is no horn and you are closer to the horse so you have to have great balance! Plus there is Jumping and Dressage all hard sports in the english discipline.
@imbad1995 You know nothing, because in english you have a huge horn to grab onto when your about to fall into a pile of 3ft high wood or the wall, also i've ridden both and i'd say english is harder
I ride both western and English and I just thought I could ride until I started English. English riding takes twice as much skill as western. Both rely on a good foundation and seat, but in English you have to stay balanced and on top of your horse. If you ride western and like to put people who ride English down please try riding in an English saddle first...it wont be easy on the flat and it wont be possible over jumps or playing polo.
@upperfarm1973 look at it when western people are in it to win it and thats it! i rode both and love both but id never say english think they are all that!!!! its each individual person its not the disipline they ride!!!! ive met tons of western riders that think they are the best nobody is better and all that bs. dont look at it as a whole look at it as individual people not everbody is the same!!! think before you talk:)
i have done both, and respect both. i personally like western more. i think western is harder than english and can say that because i have done english, because western you have barrels, poles, rodeo, and a bunch of others that take a lot of balance. English from my point of view is more jumping and cross country, witch looks really hard. I'm not dissing on english i just think western is harder, and i like it more.
People who do english probably like the clothes more, and the saddle. But there practically the same thing, a western saddle just has a horn. Western is harder than english, but english is pretty hard still. So both are really fun!!
I'll say english is hard, but I ride english, and have trotted western. My horse, Josie HATED the bit. I am english all the way, but western style isn't all as bad as you're all saying, as for the spurs they use, WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU.
BOTH ALL THE WAY!!!! <3 yes, I do ride western, but if I had the chance I would try english because I think it would be tons of fun! I have always wanted to try a jump. One thing is for sure, we all love horses!!!!!! <3
I would not be as good of a western rider if i never started english, and same way around. I win blue ribbons in both now but its just a matter of what your doing. I hate running barrels in english saddles because you dont have as much protection.
is that really fair to western tack lol showing someone pulling on a shank bit? thats just bad horsemanship lol. but as for spurs I have to say I use english spurs. I have no need for big spurs. the only reason I have the english ones even is because my 4 year old is stubborn and Id rather tap him with those than keep pounding my heels on his sides. great video though glad to see one that isnt really opinionated... have to say you missed reining though lol
western is much healthier for the horse. just look at the show jumping. the horses bend their joints too much.
western is also much more naturally. there are no tight reins (I hate it when english riders say they need to have their reins and stirrups to ride a horse), no whips (exept of horsemanship for example) and no brutal bits and so on...
WESTERNNN!!!!!!!!! people are all like all you need is a whip and spurs NO you need bravey and heart. does tht mean all you need for english is a crop and retarded tiny uncomfy saddle? THUMBS UP IF YOU AGREE!
Ima slap and english saddle on my barrel horse and jump him tomarrow.... im gonna die. Because he's a barrel horse? hell no cuz he's lazy!! he use to be an english show horse, for about 10 years, I know that some time in that 10 years he was jumped. I rode english for about 3 years and was geting into jumping, the highest i ever got was a 3.6 foot vertical, but now he is 16 and lazy and i havent really jumped in over a year sooo idk how this is gonna work.... but i hope to get it on camra lol
@ThatSoJamie Are you actually being serious right now? What an idiotic thing to say/ask. Sure, you could "slap" an English saddle on your Western horse and jump her, but I highly doubt it will turn out nicely. I don't think you'd be able to compete, either. Yeah, the saddles are different but so are many other things about the two different styles. Different seat, positions, ways of telling your horse what to do and how to do it, etc. Seriously, think before you speak!
well i guess you could try to jump her and ride her in english disipline (with a english girth, saddle, bridle and english bit) but you probably couldn't compete.
I ride English because I have grown up riding English and I love the thrill of jumping. :) And I don't have my own western saddle. xD But western is great as well.
Hunter/Jumper (english) FTW!! not saying that western is inferior it's just that I personally love english, and some people love western. So remeber to do what you love :) It's all about the bond between us and these beautiful creatures
I just wanna say this to everyone who is commenting on here:
Western isn't cruel and neither is english. Accidents will happen no matter what saddle the horse and rider are using. Both have their dangers. Barrel racing DOES NOT cause the horse to break it's legs anymore than jumping does dionnendgib. I'm not taking sides on this. I ride western and I know for a fact that it DOES NOT HURT THE HORSE. There is nothing cruel about either saddle. It's not the saddle, it's the rider.
i am english but i have nothing against western...... my best friend is both english and western and she loves both equally. yall need 2 shut yall's mouths about who is better. if i was a BRAT like some of yall are being about whos better, i wouldnt have a best friend. so yall need 2 shut it and ride your horse.
You know horses at first were never meant to carry weight on their backs but because we are able to fit the saddle comfortably and when we ride soft on their backs its not so bad. All I'm saying is I'm just glad I can ride and we figured out a way to ride this amazing creatures without harming them. There is some cruel people but they are in both styles of riding. Its not the style its the rider. I love both english and western equally.
also we do have fun in english but in england its normally too wet or hard to go on hacks but me and my friends crazy ride ( zooming around the area as fast as our ponies want until they run at of steam!!) try it its fun!!
Englishhhh Mannnn! it rockkss! western is quitee horrible to the horse (on these videos) yanoo all the spinning and changing directions in a split second 3 point turns :L :/ x
@dionnendgib well i prefer western, but ya see that there pillow like structure under the western saddle its there to help the horse keep all comfy :)
@abcgirl1251 no it isnt! the way we hold them is soft on their mouths we dont hang on to them each time, and we dont make them race around barelss so that they fall over or break legs, jumping aint cruel some horses get that excited about it they drag you into the jump, that isnt cruel? if they dont wanna do something they wont, so we dont make them, western is cruel! English rocks!
@dionnendgib You're just really un-educated about western riding. I used to think similar to you about English riding. I learned a lot more about the discipline and I've actually been riding it and it's a lot of fun and the complete opposite of what I thought. Western is NOT cruel. Have you even seen what amazing things you can do in the western style of riding? Every discipline is dangerous in their own way. You can't write comments like that, you can't judge.
@abcgirl1251 maybe you should learn a thing or two before u start commenting... english is deff not hard on the horses unless u make it hard on them. it all has to do with the rider and their decisions for tack (bridles, crops, bits, spurs, ect ect ect) kay so learn something before bitching... thanks (:
I say both. I just don't like how a lot of english riders think western doesn't take balance... we are taught to balance too. The only reason there is a saddle horn was because of roping and cattle when it first started. No one actually uses it anymore unless MAYBE reining, or barrel or pole bending... And I never see english rider out side of the arena. And I went riding with one on some trails and she literally freaked out any time her horse tosses her head. She would jump off lol
both are hard and equally amazing. ive ridden both but i was raised on western and thats what im most comforatable in, something funny is the western saddle is so complicated and bridle simple while in english the saddle is simple and bridle is so compicated XD lol
english both are amazing both sides do amazing things western riders think english are pussy's and nosy witch isnt true and english think western are dirty slobs witch isnt true either but since i ride english i say english :)
i rode western for about 6 months, then i tried english and liked it SOO much better. and for everyone that says english is slow and boring, jumpers is reeaally fast. and FUN[:
i do both but i like western because i do reining and barrel racing (: english is fun too !

@imbad1995 just saying i was taught to rest my hand on the horn not like use it for balance there fore im not a bad rider. i only use it when the horse i ride on my free time trots cuz he was a racer and his trot is like a gallop and if i dont hold on ill fall off lol
horseluvr63 1 month ago
Western is way better than English and I think it's harder I don't really compete professionally but I do take place in a great small rodeo in GA I barrel race and pole bending and I luv it u should really try it

western!!!
MyHaannaa 2 months ago
western is a lot harder then English iv rode both but I love western to compete western is the best cause you have rodeo and the extreme cowboy race english is for suck up preps you thing they better then anyone
imbad1995 2 months ago
@imbad1995 lol wow English is not for stuck up preps.. I ride english. I used to ride Western but when i rescued my horse I found he did not like the western saddle so i switched to english and I love it! I feel english is harder because there is no horn and you are closer to the horse so you have to have great balance! Plus there is Jumping and Dressage all hard sports in the english discipline.
ohiostategurl 2 months ago
@imbad1995 You know nothing, because in english you have a huge horn to grab onto when your about to fall into a pile of 3ft high wood or the wall, also i've ridden both and i'd say english is harder
thewildmustang91 2 months ago
i ride both show both and love both :)
tufflittelcowgirl 2 months ago
I like them both, though I ride English more. And don't say it's for stuck up snobs; it's just as challenging as any other style of riding.
FacePoopable 2 months ago
I ride both western and English and I just thought I could ride until I started English. English riding takes twice as much skill as western. Both rely on a good foundation and seat, but in English you have to stay balanced and on top of your horse. If you ride western and like to put people who ride English down please try riding in an English saddle first...it wont be easy on the flat and it wont be possible over jumps or playing polo.

upperfarm1973 2 months ago
@upperfarm1973 look at it when western people are in it to win it and thats it! i rode both and love both but id never say english think they are all that!!!! its each individual person its not the disipline they ride!!!! ive met tons of western riders that think they are the best nobody is better and all that bs. dont look at it as a whole look at it as individual people not everbody is the same!!! think before you talk:)

MOOMALATTACK 3 months ago 10
i have done both, and respect both. i personally like western more. i think western is harder than english and can say that because i have done english, because western you have barrels, poles, rodeo, and a bunch of others that take a lot of balance. English from my point of view is more jumping and cross country, witch looks really hard. I'm not dissing on english i just think western is harder, and i like it more.

I like both and I hate how a lot of people say English is cruel, cause it's not it's the rider that makes it cruel not the style or saddle
Juliacookielol 3 months ago
I personally think both are great in the right hands, but I grew up in engliand so ill say english! We have jumping which is always fun <3
1002Lollipop 3 months ago
People who do english probably like the clothes more, and the saddle. But there practically the same thing, a western saddle just has a horn. Western is harder than english, but english is pretty hard still. So both are really fun!!

SnakeLuver1998 3 months ago
I'll say english is hard, but I ride english, and have trotted western. My horse, Josie HATED the bit. I am english all the way, but western style isn't all as bad as you're all saying, as for the spurs they use, WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU.
RideYourLifeAway 3 months ago
BOTH ALL THE WAY!!!! <3 yes, I do ride western, but if I had the chance I would try english because I think it would be tons of fun! I have always wanted to try a jump. One thing is for sure, we all love horses!!!!!! <3
etpenusee 3 months ago
I would not be as good of a western rider if i never started english, and same way around. I win blue ribbons in both now but its just a matter of what your doing. I hate running barrels in english saddles because you dont have as much protection.
plaid186 3 months ago
is that really fair to western tack lol showing someone pulling on a shank bit? thats just bad horsemanship lol. but as for spurs I have to say I use english spurs. I have no need for big spurs. the only reason I have the english ones even is because my 4 year old is stubborn and Id rather tap him with those than keep pounding my heels on his sides. great video though glad to see one that isnt really opinionated... have to say you missed reining though lol
RideLifeAway 3 months ago
western!
western is much healthier for the horse. just look at the show jumping. the horses bend their joints too much.
western is also much more naturally. there are no tight reins (I hate it when english riders say they need to have their reins and stirrups to ride a horse), no whips (exept of horsemanship for example) and no brutal bits and so on...
666bloodredrain 3 months ago
@666bloodredrain
I agree with you about the show jumping thing but I cant say there are no brutal bits in western riding. A few of them can be pretty nasty too.

It's the RIDER that makes a seat gently beautiful or cruel. It doesn't matter in the least what saddle you're in.

QueensNewStar 8 months ago 2
i am english but i have nothing against western...... my best friend is both english and western and she loves both equally. yall need 2 shut yall's mouths about who is better. if i was a BRAT like some of yall are being about whos better, i wouldnt have a best friend. so yall need 2 shut it and ride your horse.
choochoolewis 8 months ago 2
You know horses at first were never meant to carry weight on their backs but because we are able to fit the saddle comfortably and when we ride soft on their backs its not so bad. All I'm saying is I'm just glad I can ride and we figured out a way to ride this amazing creatures without harming them. There is some cruel people but they are in both styles of riding. Its not the style its the rider. I love both english and western equally.

dionnendgib 9 months ago
@dionnendgib well i prefer western, but ya see that there pillow like structure under the western saddle its there to help the horse keep all comfy :)
pieman7771 9 months ago
@dionnendgib
english is quite hard on the horses too u know all the jumping and landing and dressgae and reins the way u guys hold them.
yeah
i thought so
abcgirl1251 8 months ago
@abcgirl1251 no it isnt! the way we hold them is soft on their mouths we dont hang on to them each time, and we dont make them race around barelss so that they fall over or break legs, jumping aint cruel some horses get that excited about it they drag you into the jump, that isnt cruel? if they dont wanna do something they wont, so we dont make them, western is cruel! English rocks!
dionnendgib 8 months ago
@dionnendgib You're just really un-educated about western riding. I used to think similar to you about English riding. I learned a lot more about the discipline and I've actually been riding it and it's a lot of fun and the complete opposite of what I thought. Western is NOT cruel. Have you even seen what amazing things you can do in the western style of riding? Every discipline is dangerous in their own way. You can't write comments like that, you can't judge.
HorsieRider125 7 months ago
@abcgirl1251 maybe you should learn a thing or two before u start commenting... english is deff not hard on the horses unless u make it hard on them. it all has to do with the rider and their decisions for tack (bridles, crops, bits, spurs, ect ect ect) kay so learn something before bitching... thanks (:

myahorning12 9 months ago
BrookemarieA 10 months ago 6
@BrookemarieA That chick who jumps ff her horse is just a random weenie xD But cross country is pretty flipping insane... and out of the arena...
TheHorseLady1212 3 months ago
both are hard and equally amazing. ive ridden both but i was raised on western and thats what im most comforatable in, something funny is the western saddle is so complicated and bridle simple while in english the saddle is simple and bridle is so compicated XD lol
