I think the Captain was smiling because it was like smiling at death, and if he didn't get the ship over the wave, that's how he was gonna go, smiling.
I always love when the first mate refuses to go below and the Captain gives him a great "you're an idiot but I respect you for it" look before getting set for the wave.
Man that captain is a beast. He needs his own statue or something.
And yes, this is the best part of the movie. At first i thought 'oh this is going to be a cliche part where the captain would yell into the thing headfirst and die.' But really, the music and the visuals really had me, but the acting was spot-on. It had me hoping they would survive and I was happy to see they did. you rock captain man!
3:02 onwards is a Crowning Moment of Awesomness with a Rule of Cool mayoneesse on top of it.
Really people, that man should get the award Balls of Steel of the century for such a contribution into the hallowed Halls of Fame of the Awesomeness Is Volatile museum where are such persons displayed as 300 spartans, Chuck Noriss, Mr. T, John 117 etc.....

thats not the worst volcano in indonesia, not even by a long shot. the most destructive and powerful one was the mount toba eruption in central sumatra. it was about 200 times stronger than krakatoa. although because it was inland, no one had to worry about tsunamis.
I have too say. We cant say whether Anak Krakatau will erupt or not. One thing is for certain. This eruption effected the weather of the entire earth straight up too 1923. A frigid mini-ice age. If Anak Krakatau does erupt and IS more powerful than Krakatoa's eruption. (due note that it was 4 times that of humanity's largest nuclear bomb ever detonated. And did this).
I have one wonder.
WHY THE *FUCK* ARE PEOPLE STILL LIVING THERE THEN?
this makes me realise we should always stop and take the time to tell the ones we love that we love them while we can and when we can, because for all we know it might be our last chance... (no im not usually that dark xD but its true! =)
Surely an impressive save. But the movie is far from truth. The Krakatoa tsunami was a major one, inland run up heights up to somewhat 50m. The wave height out in the sea was considerably smaller, even in shallow waters (run up height always above wave height with these kind of waves). Nevertheless, even a 20 meters wall of water is really bad, especially when racing fast. The captain saved the sip - which was swept deeply inland by the massive current
@FamilyGuyFanatic800 probably a cut from the ash or heat, sliced when the wave hit him that fast. The saltwater likely irritated already damaged skin, causing the bleeding to grow more obvious.
correct me if I'm wrong but arent tsunamis supposed to be unnoticeable in deeper waters? the wave in this clip resembles more like a rogue wave than a tsunami to me
@Gdaus72- They were actually still in the bay, but that was how big the wave was - even at 12 to 15 fathoms deep, it was reported by witnesses to be about 100 feet or so high. That was how great was from the explosions and collapse of Krakatoa.
Also the source of tsunamis usually start from hundreds of miles away - but this source - from Krakatoa - was only from about 30 miles from across the mainlands. Can you imagine how horrific this was? I'm glad none of us were there!
@Gdaus72 True - tsunamis are very low and practically unnoticed in deep water but only if caused by earthquakes (i.e. vibrations). If caused by landslides (i.e. by a simple abrupt water displacement), which was the case with Krakatoa collapse, they can be very high even in deep waters.
The expression on the face of the first mate at 5:26 pretty much sums up the situation. Captain Lindemann did get a citation of the high order for his heroism - I can't remember the exact one - but if you google his name there are sites with his entire diary of the events surrounding the erupion.
Oh my god.... Why don't we ever hear about this captain? This guy really did what no other person would do- go right into the wake of a tsunami, saving dozens of lives in the process. I truly salute this captain and encourage others to do so
It's amazing how the Indonesians can think about "sweeping Malaysians" when there are more important matters to attend to. Like taking steps to help their people in the face of natural disasters like this one.
The best sequence in the entire movie. The acting, the situtation, the special effects, the music all just come together perfectly.
In "disaster" epics like this, you can get only so much out of showing crowds of extras running hither and thither in panic. Watching the ship almost vertical as it tries to clear the waves, and the determination on the captain's face makes watching something like this really worth it.
After reading the Captain's log (thnx for posting!) I'd say this depiction is rather inaccurate and omitted many important moments: There were SEVERAL huge waves (though not HALF as big as the apocalypse shown in the movie probably to make the show more popular), the ship was near the harbor of Telok Betong at the time (not shown), captain saw the ship that was to disembark the passengers (the Berouw) stranded on the shore by the tsunamis etc. etc.
rite now it is it didnt even exist over 80 years ago so in another 100 years or 200 years imagine how big it will be... again... go look at up to date video's and pictures of it rite now its not that small but this event happens over and over again there are other accounts of it happening 100's of years befor the last eruption

This scene is bad science. The ship's in deep water. The "wave" (actually a series of waves) would have been mostly unnoticeable swells in deep water. This scene is no better than the 1970 film "Krakatoa," where the ship "rides out" a rogue storm wave, not a tsunami!
No, read Capt. Lindeman's diary and the other accounts (see URL link at bottom of description box).
The ship was anchored in Lampong Bay near Telok Betong, not out in deep water. The wave reached them before they could even make it out to deep water.
In the scene itself, the ship was not in deep water.
Capt. Lindeman had gone down to the hold to tell the passengers that the ship can't dock at Telok Betong and would have to sail out to sea (deep water).
But when he went upstairs, the soundings indicated that the wave (tsunami was not in their vocabulary at the time) was fast approaching. They did not have time to go out to sea (deep water).
It may only have appeared to be deep water because of the circumstances.
