as only being 15 atm i didn't know much about Fitzroy lions & always wanted to know what my local footy teams song was based on!
i found out that it was based on the long gone Fitzroy , as i didnt know much i started researching about the lions & am discusted in the AFL & how they have bullied Fitzroy & i can see the same thing happening in the next 10 years to my belovered kangaroos :(
South Melbourne never died.... there are no minutes in any of there meetings that refers to them as ended, they relocated to Sydney and changed there name, Footscray moved and changed it's name to the Western Bulldogs are they dead?
the only clubs that have ended are University and Fitzroy.
As a Bears man, the days of Merrett, Mclean, Lambert, the young Voss' and Akermanis, I watch all the AFL I can, study sports science to work in the AFL and the Brisbane Lions are my number one team.
The Bears have this special place, just as I think Fitzroy does for all the old supporters. The difference is, although some say Fitzroy now play in the lower league, it's not the same team, it's the development feeder clubs- just as I am sure South Melbourne feeder Clubs still exist.

@ausmies Brisbane Lions need Fiztroy Culture now more than ever. Watching with 13,000 other fans in the 2nd last game was no different to some of the darkest Fitzroy days. Good to see Brisbane Lions recognising the 8 premierships and recently they posted info on Bernie Quinlan being the only player from the 3 associated clubs to have kicked 100 goals in a season. Put on different Fitzroy strips from era's when playing in Melbourne and watch the supporters come back.
can I ask where you got these pictures, university interest me but there seems to be little to know literature other than wikipedia and the 100yrs of Australian football book which contains very little.
I got these pics from a internet site on Australian rules football that is fullpointsfooty (dot) com
And the university jumper from footyjumpers (dot) com.
I did not have a scanner at the time of doing this vid so I was not able to get the University pics from any of the footy books like the 100 years of (VFL/AFL) Football made in 1996 or the Clubs book made in 1998.
As I remember, the Clubs book has got an entire page of the history of the University's short 7 year history.
before you aussies flame me for my other post, let me say, as an american i'm just giving an observation of what defunct and relocated mean in the nfl
btw, i love australian footy & wish they still televised it here in the states
fair point, and if we want to get technical, fitzroy and university are not defunct, they are playing in a much lower competition. but you do have a good point because there are many south melbourne and fitzroy fans that have embraced the changes to their club. however there are just as many that refuse to follow either brisbane or sydney. i wouldn't have a clue how the old brisbane bear fans feel
relocation occurred in american football many times, e.g., baltimore colts moved to indianapolis yrs ago
baltimore colts are a relocated team, not defunct
cleveland browns later moved to baltimore & were sued by the city of cleveland for the name & became the ravens even tho they had the same players who were browns
yrs later cleveland got an expansion team, the browns, & the stat history of the team that is now the ravens
1. Relocated: become established in a new place or era.
2. Died: cease to exist.
I can't believe you think that these two words bear some connection. Go back to school and re-learn the English language little boy. And where the hell did I mention anything about "died" for you to bring it up? Another stupid You-tube loser...
A great tribute on the greed of football and how the soul of football has been destroyed.
I'm a brisbane fan back in the days of merret, mclean, gastev and poor nathan chapman when he had to play on the likes of modra, ablett, dunstall and rocca, no other kid had it as hard as he had in his first year of football.
I cried when fitzroy played their last game.
Even as i type this the most successful side in south australia port magpies are on their last legs. Once again thanks.
South Melbourne changed their name (like Western Bulldogs from Footscray) and relocated (like Collingwood from Vic Park to MCG area) but the same club continues... with ongoing identity, win/loss/premiership records, song, colours, etc . So you can leave them out of the "defunct" list. Only University, Fitzroy, Brisbane bears are on this list.
Sorry, but totally disagree. South was forced to go to Sydney. No one believes the Brisbane Lions are Fitzroy yet they have the same colours, etc. as you quote here.
FACT: When a company/Legal entity changes its name, the former "business" no longer exists. The name South Melbourne doesn't appear in any VFL/AFL ladder since 1981. Both Sydney and Brisbane are to be commended on their efforts to be inclusive of supporters of former clubs and "heal the wounds". Whether "morally" they are a continuation of the former clubs is a matter of opinion, legally they are not. Anyhow, we agree to disagree! Best wishes 4 the future.
Rubbish. Just because Footscray changed to a new trading name does not mean the former Footscray no longer exists..
Again, trying to lump the Swans into the same category as a merged team (Brisbane Lions) is a very flimsy "FACT" to base your ill-informed OPINION on.
Maybe, but my point is there are still many ex South and Fitzroy fans who have turned away from football because in their opinion, ill -informed or not, their team was taken from them.
dumbass the fitzroy fotball club limited joind forces with unversity reds and made the fitzroy reds or are you to busy sticking carrots up your ass to read these "FACTS"
Yet another crass, vulgar comment on you tube. Oh joy! You can't even spell "football", so who is the "dumbass"? The point I was trying to make is that I know many south and fitzroy fans who's hearts were broken by the "loss" of their teams.
TBoneTony, the video's you're thinking of are "VFL on Film 1909-45" and "VFL on Film 1946-81" which were released by Australian Football Video in the late 90's. I have seen both and I can say that they are two of the finest films about the Victorian Football League that I have ever seen. Despite their popularity, they have yet to be released on DVD and from what I've heard, they won't be released for the foreseeable future
My dad Alan(Skeeta)Welch played for South Melbourne back in the 30's and was a member of the 1933 squad, playing in the semi-final where he broke his ankle and so sat on the bench for the victorious final of 1933. He played next to legendry players such a Bob Pratt.
A South Melbourne diehard did he sadly died in 1969.(I think he would be horrified to know the are now the SYDNEY swans).
If anyone knows of any footage of the Swans from back in the 30's, let me know. Jane
South Melbourne aren't gone their Sydney. Same club changed their name.

ianbuckambo 2 years ago
Huh?? The Brisbane Lions are not Fitzroy. No-one says they are.
They are a merged (new) team formed from 1. Brisbane Bears and 2. Fitzroy.
The Sydney Swans are a lock-stock-and-barrel continuation of the South Melbourne Swans, in another geographic location, hence the name change.
Yes, they had little choice but to go to Sydney, but that is irrelevant to the point that they are the same football club.
Sorry, but you can't 'disagree' with facts, only opinions.

Anyway, why are you looking back at 1981, when the "AFL" only started in 1990???In your confused argument the AFL is not a continuation of the VFL.
Shows how ridiculous your argument is.

Confused? Ridiculous? Rubbish?
Maybe, but my point is there are still many ex South and Fitzroy fans who have turned away from football because in their opinion, ill -informed or not, their team was taken from them.

Most Fitzroy fans have turned away from football because they no longer have their team.
Most South fans stuck with the Swans as they still have a team, although still angry they were re-located.
